Summary
- The new Avengers team has been slowly teased since Endgame.
- Likely candidates for Sam Wilson’s new team include Joaquin Torres and Shang-Chi, as confirmed by Avengers: Doomsday casting.
- MCU powerhouses like Thor and Bruce Banner are also likely recruits for the new Avengers team.
⚠️ Caution: The following list contains major plot revelations from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) up to and beyond Thunderbolts, as well as updates on casting for Avengers: Doomsday. Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been primarily centered around the creation of a fresh group similar to the Avengers ever since “Avengers: Endgame.” This storyline has gradually unfolded with each new release. For instance, it was the central plot in “Captain America: Brave New World,” where President Ross enlists Captain America (Sam Wilson) to assemble a new team. Moreover, it played a significant role in the surprising climax of “Thunderbolts.
Towards the closing moments of the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Thunderbolts, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine compels the main group to assume the role of “the New Avengers.” A subsequent post-credits scene hints that Sam Wilson is taking legal action regarding the name “Avengers,” suggesting he has previously established a fresh, more formal team. Naturally, fans find themselves curious: who did he manage to enlist from behind the scenes? Given the wealth of popular Marvel characters, these eight individuals are strong possibilities.
8. Joaquin Torres (Falcon)
Captain America’s Loyal Sidekick
- Portrayed by: Danny Ramirez
- Debut: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (2021)
Without a doubt, one key member of Sam’s fresh Avengers squad is none other than Joaquin Torres, who stepped into the role of Falcon following Sam’s transformation into Captain America. He demonstrated his reliability in their first joint outing on Disney Plus series, “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.” Notably, he mastered the classic Falcon equipment to aid Captain America in combat, both before and during the storyline of “Brave New World.
In a mutual show of trust, Sam depends on Joaquin as much as Joaquin relies on Sam, making it highly unlikely that Joaquin hasn’t been tapped for Sam’s new Avengers squad. Given Sam’s past as Falcon and his partnership with Steve Rogers, it seems natural that he would aim to recreate a similar dynamic with Joaquin. Additionally, we know from recent announcements that Danny Ramirez is part of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, suggesting that Falcon’s recruitment has likely taken place behind the scenes.
7. Thor Odinson
One Of The Few Original Avengers Who Is Still Around
- Portrayed by: Chris Hemsworth
- Debut: Thor (2011)
In the present MCU timeline, most of the initial Avengers aren’t active anymore due to either their demise or retirement. However, there are two exceptions who buck this trend. The one who stands out most notably is none other than Thor Odinson. Post the momentous events of Avengers: Endgame, he’s the sole original team member who received a fourth film, Thor: Love and Thunder. This movie concluded with him adopting and nurturing Love, even teaching her combat skills.
Among Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) characters, Thor stands out as one with a versatile role: Marvel Studios has the option to keep him retired indefinitely or bring him back into action for future movies. Given that Chris Hemsworth is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, it seems he’s now part of Sam’s new team. This could be significant and advantageous, as Thor, the almighty deity, ranks among the most powerful heroes in the entire MCU.
6. Scott Lang (Ant-Man)
An Iconic Character Who Never Joined The Old Avengers Team
- Portrayed by: Paul Rudd
- Debut: Ant-Man (2011)
Interestingly, while Scott Lang, better known as Ant-Man, is widely loved by fans, he wasn’t formally inducted into any Avengers team. He did battle alongside Captain America in Civil War, and was absent during the events of Infinity War, but joined the fight against Thanos’ forces in Endgame. However, unlike other characters, he didn’t earn the official title of an Avenger.
Introducing Scott (Ant-Man) into the new team would be a great chance for Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) to correct their oversight, given that he’s an endearing character with exceptional abilities and significant knowledge about the Quantum Realm, which played a crucial role in saving the day during Avengers: Endgame. His latest appearance was in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where he defeated Kang, but since Marvel Studios has dropped that storyline involving Kang’s return, it seems unlikely that Scott will have to worry about him anymore. Furthermore, Paul Rudd, who plays Ant-Man, is confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, increasing the chances of seeing Scott as part of the Avengers team.
5. Shuri (Black Panther)
The New Black Panther Would Be Another Crucial Addition To The Team
- Portrayed by: Letitia Wright
- Debut: Black Panther (2018)
Following the heartbreaking and unexpected demise of my brother, T’Challa (and his on-screen counterpart, Chadwick Boseman), it fell upon me, Shuri, to carry forward the legacy of the Black Panther, as portrayed in the 2022 film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”. Having relinquished my throne to M’Baku and embarking on a global journey, I find myself uniquely poised to join forces with the Avengers.
Having Shuri as the second Black Panther on our team would be quite beneficial, as she’s not just adept in combat but incredibly intelligent too, and she could continue her brother’s legacy. It’s worth noting that Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, has already been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, and Tenoch Huerta, the actor portraying Namor, is also set to appear in the upcoming film. So, it’d be intriguing to see how these two potential allies, who may not always see eye-to-eye, interact and what they’ve been up to.
4. Shang-Chi
This Expert Martial Artist Needs To Make A Comeback
- Portrayed by: Simu Liu
- Debut: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films that followed “Avengers: Endgame“, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ” was undeniably one of the most well-received. The audience found a strong connection with the character “Shang-Chi“, his martial arts skills, and the intricate father-son dynamic with Xu Wenwu (also known as The Mandarin). Following the thrilling post-credit scene from his initial movie, where he is seen conversing with Wong, Carol Danvers, and Bruce Banner, fans have been eagerly asking Marvel Studios to reintroduce him in some capacity.
Luckily, it’s been verified that Simu Liu is joining Avengers: Doomsday, which increases the likelihood that Sam Wilson chose to enlist Shang-Chi for the Avengers without any on-screen recruitment. This assumption arises especially if Wong, Carol, or Bruce shared with him information about Shang-Chi’s heroic exploits and the powerful rings he inherited from his father.
3. Carol Danvers
One Of The Most Powerful Superheroes In The MCU
- Portrayed by: Brie Larson
- Debut: Captain Marvel (2019)
In the vast Marvel Cinematic Universe, Captain Marvel, or Carol Danvers, stands out as an exceptionally powerful character, making it appear at times that Marvel Studios may be unsure about how best to utilize her abilities, which surpass those of many of her peers. Most recently, she was featured in the film The Marvels, where she returned to Earth and ignited a spark in Kamala Khan that led her to form her own group of young heroes. Given this, it seems only logical for Sam Wilson to reach out to Carol Danvers and invite her to join the new Avengers team.
Although Brie Larson’s participation in Avengers: Doomsday has not been officially confirmed, it’s strongly suggested that Captain Marvel is now part of Sam’s new team, perhaps engaged in other matters prior or concurrently with the events of this film. Given her impressive display of power against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, her inclusion in the team would undeniably be significant.
2. Bruce Banner (Smart Hulk)
This Classic Avenger Is Finally Back On Earth
- Portrayed by: Mark Ruffalo
- Debut: The Incredible Hulk (2008)
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve found it peculiar to witness the strange appearances of Bruce Banner within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given his role as one of the original Avengers, it’s fascinating how much of his character growth has taken place off-screen – such as when he successfully merged his Banner and Hulk personalities into what we now know as ‘Smart Hulk’. It’s also worth mentioning that since his debut film in 2008, he hasn’t headlined a project of his own, with a different actor portraying him initially.
The rights for the 2008 Hulk film have now been returned to Disney and Marvel Studios. This change raises questions about potential future solo Hulk projects, but given that he appeared in the final episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, where he returned to Earth with his Sakaarian son, Skaar, the Hulk is well-positioned to join Sam Wilson’s upcoming Avengers team. If, for some reason, the Hulk can’t or chooses not to join, it’s possible that his cousin, Jennifer Walters (also known as She-Hulk), could step in instead.
1. Peter Parker (Spider-Man)
This Friendly Neighborhood Hero Has Recently Restarted His Journey
- Portrayed by: Tom Holland
- Debut: Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Despite ongoing rights disputes between Disney and Sony, Marvel Studios has skillfully incorporated Spider-Man into numerous projects, from his standalone films to appearances in three non-Spider-Man movies. However, given that Peter Parker’s reappearance with the Avengers might not be feasible due to storyline reasons, the main challenge lies in concealing his identity following the conclusion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, as no one in the MCU should recall who he is anymore.
To sum up, towards the film’s finale, he resumed his solo career as a street-level superhero in New York City. If he has been successful, it’s likely that Sam Wilson reached out to recruit him for the Avengers. However, with Tom Holland’s participation in Avengers: Doomsday uncertain and Spider-Man: Brand New Day being produced, it remains unclear whether Marvel and Sony intend to incorporate him into the team or prefer him to focus on more street-level escapades.
