In role-playing games (RPGs), a player’s initial class choice is often based on the abilities – or skills – they’ll gain as they play. These skills are earned through leveling up and gaining skill points. While abilities aren’t always exclusive to a specific class – sometimes they’re found with items or available to everyone – powerful abilities can dramatically change how a game plays out.
Let’s look at some RPG abilities. Some are intentionally incredibly powerful, and therefore hard to obtain. Others might be flawed or simply included for enjoyment. However, the following abilities are among the most potent ever created in RPGs, and acquiring them will make the rest of the game much easier.

Knights Of The Round – Final Fantasy 7
A Virtually Guaranteed One-Shot In Exchange For 250 MP
Let’s address the most well-known aspect first. The “Knights of the Round” summon in Final Fantasy 7 was designed to be incredibly powerful, essentially a game-breaking ability. It attacks enemies 13 times, with each hit dealing at least 7,000 damage and potentially up to 9,999. Because most enemies don’t have more than 13,000 health, it often acts as an instant win, allowing players to easily defeat opponents.
Getting Knights of the Round is incredibly difficult. You need a Golden Chocobo to reach Round Island where it’s hidden, and getting that Chocobo is a major challenge. You can either beat Ruby Weapon, a ridiculously strong boss that can knock out your characters, or rely on luck with the Chocobo breeding quest. Both options are time-consuming, which makes finally obtaining Knights of the Round so rewarding.
And Stay Back – Fallout: New Vegas
Shotgun City
The description for the ‘And Stay Back’ perk is misleading. It simply states that shotguns have a chance to knock enemies back, which seems odd since shotguns already do that sometimes. The chance itself is only 10%, so it’s not a huge benefit. What the game doesn’t explain is that this 10% chance applies to each pellet fired from the shotgun, not just each shot. This means that regular buckshot actually works better with this perk than some of the stronger, more specialized shotgun ammo you might find.
Combine the ‘And Stay Back’ perk with the Riot Shotgun – a fast-firing, semi-automatic weapon – and you’ll quickly take down enemies. Investing in the Luck stat makes this combination even more powerful. The Riot Shotgun is already a top-tier weapon in New Vegas, but with ‘And Stay Back’, it makes combat incredibly easy. Enemies will struggle to defend themselves when they’re constantly being knocked off balance.
Path Of The Mortal Legend – Pathfinder: Wrath Of The Righteous
It’s Always The Ones You Least Expect…
So, in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you actually pick a ‘Mythic Path’ – think of it like adding a whole new layer of powers to your character, on top of your usual class. You can go full undead as a Lich, mess with time and space as an Aeon, or… you can choose the Mortal Legend. Honestly, when I first heard about it, I thought it sounded kinda lame. Just…playing as a normal person? Rejecting all that cool, magical stuff? What’s the point of that?
This Mythic Path offers a trade-off: you won’t get extremely powerful abilities right away, but it lets you continue leveling beyond the usual limit of level 20, up to level 40. While other paths stop at 20, this one effectively doubles your progression, giving you more opportunities to improve your health, stats, skills, and abilities. It’s a slower, more consistent way to become incredibly strong. Keep in mind, your base class still maxes out at level 20, making this path ideal if you plan on combining multiple classes.
Dominate Turret – Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Play The Game For Me
In Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you have a lot of freedom in how you tackle combat. You can be sneaky and avoid killing anyone, go in guns blazing, or improvise using whatever’s available. All these approaches work well, and that’s exactly how the game is designed. You could even set up a turret and let it fight for you!
To pull this off, you’ll need the Dominate Turret ability and the Move Heavy Object ability (though Move Heavy Object isn’t strictly necessary, it adds flexibility). When you find a minigun turret, hack its computer and set it to attack enemies. You can then pick up and carry the turret into battle, where it will automatically target everything around you. Alternatively, you can set it down and it will function the same way. Carrying it, however, lets you use it as mobile cover, providing extra protection. This strategy can even make one of the game’s toughest boss fights surprisingly easy: simply bring a turret into the Namir fight, shoot him once to remove his cloak, and the turret will finish him off.
Alterna – Final Fantasy 15
Trap Your Enemies In A Terrifying Death Dimension
In Final Fantasy 15, the Ring of the Lucii is surprisingly easy to obtain – you receive it automatically during Chapter 13. What’s really strange is that it comes with three incredibly powerful abilities, and it actually got stronger with the 1.5 update. While it may have felt a little underpowered at first, it’s now overpowered. The Ring grants you three key abilities: Death, a beam attack that builds up to instantly kill enemies; Holy, which replaces Noctis’ dodge with a protective burst of flame; and Alterna.
Let’s focus on Alterna. When Noctis uses it, it’s like he creates a temporary distortion in the world. This distortion affects all enemies on screen, encasing them in a crystal field that quickly implodes. This instantly eliminates many enemies from the fight, completely removing them from combat. What’s amazing is that Alterna works on almost any enemy, even powerful summons like Ifrit and Adamantoise, a notoriously difficult optional boss with a huge amount of health. Updates to the game have removed most enemy resistances to Alterna, meaning the only limitation now is having enough space for the attack’s animation to play out.
Summon Dremora Lord – The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Let The Demon Do The Work
One reason the spell Summon Dremora Lord is so strong in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion is that you can get it very early in the game. You just need to reach the Bruma Mages Guild and have a Conjuration skill level of 100. Getting to Bruma is simple – just find it on the map and head north. Leveling up Conjuration takes more effort, but it’s easy because you don’t need to target anything to cast these spells. Just repeatedly cast Summon Skeleton while exploring, and your skill will increase quickly.
To get this spell from Volanaro, you’ll need 3,000 Septims. Once you have it and are able to cast it, the most effective way to use Summon Dremora Lord is to cast it right when you enter a dungeon. Then, let the Dremora Lord go ahead and fight for you! It’s powerful enough to clear out most dungeons and even finish parts of the main storyline. It’s amazing, and exactly what a Conjuration mage would want!
Blessed Hammer – Diablo 2: Resurrected
Paladins Never Looked So Good
The Blessed Hammer ability has been a powerhouse since the original Diablo 2, and it remains incredibly strong in Diablo 2: Resurrected, solidifying its place as one of the best abilities in any RPG. This Paladin skill summons a circle of flying hammers around your character, damaging enemies they hit. Unlike many area-of-effect abilities, careful positioning is important to get the most out of it, but it deals so much damage from the start that you’ll likely find yourself using it constantly.
Blessed Hammer is a fantastic skill because it can become incredibly powerful with the right setup. Using Tir runes lets you regain mana when you defeat enemies, helping to manage the skill’s high mana usage. Combining it with a polearm that has the Insight rune solves mana problems even further. Adding the Concentration aura to your Paladin significantly boosts Blessed Hammer’s damage. While strong on its own, with these additions, Blessed Hammer can quickly clear out large groups of enemies.
Komaki Tiger Drop – Yakuza Kiwami
So OP, It Became A Meme
The “Komaki Tiger Drop” move in Yakuza Kiwami is notoriously strong, and fans are well aware of it. A popular meme simply states the button combination to perform it – “R1 + Triangle” – highlighting just how effective it is. Some fans even joke that Kiryu Kazuma could beat Kratos in a fight thanks to Tiger Drop! The reason? Kiryu takes no damage while using the move, and on top of that, it’s incredibly powerful.
This weapon makes most fights in the game incredibly easy. With a few upgrades, it can even defeat bosses in a single hit, and the challenging Majima Everywhere encounters become a breeze. The biggest challenge is actually obtaining it – you need to collect enough Colosseum points by finding all the lost Komaki paintings. You can earn these points by fighting lower-level enemies, but it will take time. Alternatively, you can take on tougher fights for faster progress. Completing special mid-battle challenges, called Crowd Pleasers, will also earn you extra points. The Image of the Tiger costs 17,000 points, but once you unlock it, it’s powerful enough to handle everything you’ll face.
