One Piece is an incredibly long manga and anime, so it’s no surprise it has thousands of characters, each with their own distinct appearance, personality, goals, and powers. Because of this, every fan is bound to have a list of their favorite characters from the series – whether they’re pirates, marines, revolutionaries, or others.
I’ve noticed that not all the characters in One Piece are created equally. Some are just so unpleasant or off-putting that many fans really can’t stand them – whether that was the creator’s intention or not. There are plenty of characters fans dislike, but here are eight of the most notorious examples so far.
Jaygarcia Saturn
The Most Despicable Member Of The Five Elders (So Far)
- Debut: Chapter 233 (Manga) Episode 151 (Anime)
When the Five Elders first appeared during the Jaya Arc, they seemed like typical politicians simply issuing commands to the Marines. But as the story unfolded and we learned more about them and the World Government, it became clear they were far more problematic than originally imagined. Saint Jaygarcia Saturn, in particular, has become the most disliked of the group.
Watching everything unfold, it became clear that Saturn, calling himself a ‘God of Science and Defense,’ was behind all the tragedy in Kuma and Bonney’s lives. He cruelly experimented on Ginny, giving her a fatal illness, and he shamelessly used Bonney to control Kuma. Then, he went even further, turning Kuma into a weapon with no will of his own. What was truly horrifying was his complete lack of empathy – he simply didn’t see regular humans as worthy of consideration. Thankfully, Imu put an end to him during the Egghead Arc, meaning he can no longer inflict pain on anyone else.
Spandam
A Weak And Cowardly “Nepo Baby”
- Debut: Chapter 355 (Manga) Episode 249 (Anime)
You’d naturally assume the head of CP9, a famously dangerous group in One Piece, would be a powerful and heartless fighter, like the rest of its members. But that’s not the case at all. Spandam is actually weak, a coward, and incredibly full of himself – he only leads CP9 because he’s the son of the previous leader, Spandine.
Spandam was a truly despicable villain. He falsely accused Tom of crimes, intending to have him executed so he could steal the plans for the ancient weapon Pluton. Throughout the Enies Lobby arc, he relentlessly tormented Nico Robin, all while hiding behind the strength of others – like Rob Lucci, Kaku, and even his own subordinate, Funkfreed. Thankfully, Robin delivered a satisfying blow at the arc’s conclusion, breaking Spandam’s spine and bringing his cruelty to an end.
Absalom
The Mere Presence Of This Creepy Pervert Brought Down The Thriller Bark Arc
- Debut: Chapter 444 (Manga) Episode 339 (Anime)
It’s no secret that One Piece features a lot of characters with questionable behavior, and creator Eiichiro Oda often uses crude humor. While most of these characters have some positive traits, Absalom from the Thriller Bark arc is consistently unpleasant and lacks any redeeming qualities.
Absalom’s introduction is incredibly problematic: he uses his invisibility to spy on and attack Nami while she’s showering. He continues to be annoying throughout the Thriller Bark arc, even making Sanji seem less impressive. Many One Piece fans consider him the worst part of that arc, and thankfully, he was recently killed by the Blackbeard Pirates, who now possess his Devil Fruit ability.
Rosward Charlos
The Perfect Example Of Everything That’s Wrong With The Celestial Dragons
- Debut: Chapter 499 (Manga) Episode 393 (Anime)
In the anime and manga One Piece, the Celestial Dragons – also known as World Nobles – are incredibly arrogant and entitled people who embody the worst aspects of society. They’re depicted as so superior that they wear special helmets to avoid breathing the same air as commoners, and they have the power to directly command high-ranking Marines, even enslaving anyone they choose. While any Celestial Dragon could be considered despicable, the creator, Eiichiro Oda, wanted to create a character who truly captured their awful nature, leading to the creation of Rosward Charlos.
I have to say, Charlos is just a terrible character. There’s really nothing to like about him – he’s irritating, thinks way too much of himself, and is frankly unpleasant. What makes it even worse is that he constantly tries to force others into slavery simply because he can. It’s gotten to the point where the author, Oda, seems to deliberately put him in situations where someone else ends up attacking him – Luffy, Mjosgard, Sai, Leo… and honestly, it’s incredibly satisfying to watch!
Vander Decken IX
A Creepy Minor Antagonist Full Of Untapped Potential
- Debut: Chapter 606 (Manga) Episode 525 (Anime)
The idea of a pirate who’s half-fish, has supernatural powers from a Devil Fruit, and controls a ghost ship initially seems really cool. However, this potential was lost with Vander Decken IX, a relatively unimportant villain from the Fish-Man Island story arc. He’s not only weaker than his partner, Hody Jones, but he’s also quite unsettling.
Vander Decken IX has been fixated on Princess Shirahoshi since she was an infant, spending years following and harassing her with unwanted love letters. The story attempts to justify his behavior by claiming he wants to control her ability to communicate with Sea Kings, but this explanation doesn’t excuse his creepy and disturbing actions.
Trebol
Doflamingo’s Partner In Crime Is Both Lame And Annoying
- Debut: Chapter 700 (Manga) Episode 629 (Anime)
Trebol, a member of the Donquixote Family, is a deeply immoral character. He heavily influenced Doflamingo from childhood, essentially shaping him into the heartless pirate he became. Despite this, many One Piece fans might overlook his actions if he were a compelling or visually striking villain – someone like Kaido or Akainu. Sadly, he lacks those qualities, making him a less engaging character.
I have to say, Trebol is one of the least appealing characters in One Piece. And honestly, his laugh is incredibly irritating – you can hear it every time he appears! The only good thing about him, I thought, was his Devil Fruit, the Beta Beta no Mi. It seemed like his mucus powers could be really useful and strong. But then it turned out it wasn’t even a Logia-type fruit, and he was just using the mucus to cover up how physically weak he really is.
Kurozumi Orochi
A Cruel And Resentful Monarch That Made His Home Country Suffer
- Debut: Chapter 927 (Manga) Episode 921 (Anime)
Even though he’s a newer character in the series, Kurozumi Orochi is quickly becoming one of the most disliked characters in One Piece, rivaling Spandam and Charlos. For over twenty-five years, he ruled Wano and, by teaming up with the Beast Pirates, caused immense suffering. He deliberately starved citizens, poisoned their food and water, and brutally punished anyone who dared to resist his rule through enslavement, torture, or murder.
Orochi didn’t care about his country, blaming everyone for the misfortune his family suffered generations ago. Despite the kindness shown to him by people like the Kouzuki Family, he immediately betrayed them. On top of being unpleasant, he was also weak, unable to properly use his powerful Devil Fruit. Because of all this, it’s incredibly satisfying when Hiyori finally gets her revenge and defeats him.
Queen Estrid
The Worst Mother In The Series
- Debut: Chapter 1153
Interestingly, Estrid was only recently introduced in the manga, during Loki’s long flashback, but she’s quickly become known as one of the series’ worst mothers. One of the main reasons is that she married King Harald through a political arrangement, keeping him from being with the woman he truly loved, Ida.
Estrid truly became a villain when she rejected her newborn son, Loki, solely because of how he looked. She went even further, personally throwing him into the underworld of Elbaph in an attempt to abandon him forever. Even after her death from illness, Estrid continued to harm Harald’s family; her relatives poisoned Ida and were responsible for her death, demonstrating her lasting cruelty.
