On the other hand, they could make the game more unforgettable due to their shock value. To put it simply, the Resident Evil series has been known for its bizarre and surprising endings, and the games listed below are among the most extraordinary examples of this trend.
Before diving in, be aware that this list includes both regular endings and post-credit scenes, which means it contains significant spoilers for the series.
This list contains spoilers!
8. Resident Evil 6 (Chris’ Campaign)
A Chaotic Final Mission Featuring A Giant Octopus B.O.W And An Unexpected Heroic Sacrifice
Chris’ campaign in Resident Evil 6 focuses on the legendary protagonist getting back into the saddle after becoming disillusioned with fighting bioterror after so many years. The man who’s there to help him along the way is Piers, a young but extremely passionate soldier who many fans were presuming would end up becoming a mainstay for the series, and somewhat of a new-generation iteration of Chris.
In an unexpected twist, Chris’ narrative reached its climax with both characters confronting a massive bio-organic weapon in a submerged lab. This ordeal led to Piers making a selfless decision by injecting himself with the C-virus to protect them from the mutating threat. Although it was unforeseen, given Capcom’s tendency to preserve side characters, it undeniably added a profound emotional depth to the closing moments of the story.
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake
A Random Cameo From Wesker That Took Everyone By Surprise
In the original Resident Evil 4, Wesker merely makes a brief appearance in Separate Ways and is playable in Mercenaries mode. Consequently, it came as quite a surprise to fans when he appeared during the post-credits scene of the remake, even engaging in open discussion about his Uroboros plan that sets the stage for the fifth game.
As a gamer, I must admit, it took me aback to see Ada showing such hostility towards Wesker. Normally, she’s all about taking on any job, no matter how perilous it might be. Yet here we are, left guessing if this could mean a remake of Resident Evil 5 is coming up. Only time will unveil what Capcom has cooking for us gamers.
6. Resident Evil 5
The End Of Resident Evil 5 Pits Players Against The Series’ Main Antagonist Inside A Volcano
In Resident Evil 5, it might not have been surprising that Wesker turned out to be the ultimate boss given his role as the primary antagonist throughout the story. However, the scale and extravagance of the showdown between Chris and Sheva versus Wesker surpassed all expectations. After they captured Wesker on his bomber, the plane crashed into a volcano, transforming it into the battlefield for this climactic encounter.
Following several boulder impacts and a substantial amount of ammo expended, Wesker falls into the molten lava, writhing in agony. In response, Chris and Sheva blast off two rockets, severing the infamous antagonist’s head, ensuring his ultimate defeat. The climactic and extravagant ending served as an unforeseen yet impactful finale to the longstanding rivalry between Chris and Wesker.
5. Resident Evil 7
Resident Evil 7’s Final Moments Sparked Numerous Online Discussions Because Of How Unexpected It Was
In a surprising twist, Resident Evil 7 appears to function as a self-contained game with minimal connections to the wider series, until the climax. Once players defeat Eveline following her transformation, a helicopter arrives at the Baker Estate to save Ethan and Mia. However, when the pilot takes off his helmet, it’s none other than Chris Redfield! This ending is already unexpected, but the shock is heightened by Chris’ radically altered appearance, leading some fans to speculate that this was just his codename at the time.
In the final moments of “Resident Evil 7,” things grew even more puzzling as the helicopter used for Ethan and Mia’s evacuation belonged to Umbrella, albeit with an altered logo. This revelation sparked numerous questions and turned out to be a larger cliffhanger than anticipated, given that this installment appeared to be a standalone story.
4. The Darkside Chronicles (Memories Of A Lost City)
Memories Of A Lost City Paints The Hopeful Ending Of Resident Evil 2 In A Much Different Light
In the original “Resident Evil 2”, Leon, Claire, and Sherry successfully evaded the Raccoon City outbreak, resulting in a generally positive and optimistic conclusion. Yet, “Memories of a Lost City”, a campaign inspired by the second game’s events, inserted an additional ending scene that significantly alters the mood, leading to a more somber and surprising finish instead.
Following their departure, a sequence unfolds where Leon is seen seated under interrogation by American authorities, pressuring him to become a special agent, hinting that harm could come to Sherry if he refuses. This scene encapsulates why Leon appeared so disenchanted with his role as an agent in the reimagining of Resident Evil 4, and it left quite a few viewers taken aback upon its initial viewing.
3. Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Code Veronica Leaves Players With A Sudden Cliffhanger After An Unexpected Battle Between Chris And Wesker
In the world of Code Veronica, I, as a player, might think that defeating the Ashford twins, Alexia in particular, would wrap up the game. However, what transpires next is far from expected. Just before Chris and Claire make their escape from Antarctica, an intense showdown unfolds between Chris and Wesker, who now possesses superhuman abilities. After a fierce stare-off, they dive into a brutal brawl, with Wesker effortlessly overpowering his once trusted ally, Chris.
Originally, it was assumed that Chris would have a role in the game, but the main narrative focusing on Claire’s journey made players think the conflict between Chris and Wesker might be less prominent. However, contrary to expectations, the game concludes with the two engaging in a heated verbal argument, interspersed with physical altercations, as they grapple with each other, while the base is simultaneously being destroyed by explosions.
2. Resident Evil
The First Game Ends With Plenty Of Twists, A Difficult Tyrant Fight, And An Intense Self-Destruct Sequence
In the initial game, explorers find themselves in the eerie Spencer Mansion, questioning if their STARS comrades are as honest as they seem to be. The game skillfully leads players to suspect Barry, implying he might be the puppeteer hidden in the background. However, this suspicion is a deliberate misdirection that makes the surprising finale even more intriguing.
At the culmination of the game, players uncover that the entire ordeal had been orchestrated by Wesker, and ultimately, Umbrella. Shortly following this discovery, Wesker is fatally wounded by a Tyrant, prompting players to engage in combat against it on a helipad. Just as expected, the facility implodes shortly after, with the players attempting to flee by helicopter before the explosion. Although the idea of escaping a building before it detonates is a recurring theme in this game series, the sudden revelation and surprise ending were particularly shocking, especially given the rapid succession of disclosures that had just taken place.
1. Resident Evil Village
Ethan Learns That He’s Been Little More Than A Walking Corpse For The Last Few Years
In the majority of ‘Resident Evil Village’, it appears Ethan may be on the verge of reconnecting with his daughter, Rose, who was taken from him initially. But, as he’s on the brink of leaving Heisenberg’s factory to restore Rose, he slips into a surreal condition and learns from Eveline that he supposedly perished at the start of the previous installment.
In essence, Ethan’s physical form is deteriorating due to the Mold’s influence, giving him only moments with Rose before he selflessly gives up his life, allowing her and others to flee. It was unexpected for many that Ethan would have such an heroic farewell, but the revelation of his infection came as a massive surprise to the players.
