The way shields are used in action-packed anime (often called ‘shonen’) has changed a lot. It used to be simple – characters just carried metal shields. Now, the genre features creative and exciting new ways to use shields, making shield users just as powerful and visually impressive as characters who fight with swords or magic.
Shonen anime is known for featuring incredible characters who use shields. Some of these shield users are exceptionally powerful, boasting defenses that are nearly impossible to break. This article highlights the very best and strongest shield users from across the shonen genre.
Greed (Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Greed, being a homunculus, can heal incredibly quickly, which frustrates enemies eager to land a hit. He’s also naturally much stronger and faster than most, making him a tough opponent in a one-on-one fight. However, it’s best to defeat him quickly, because a prolonged battle could be deadly.
Even more impressively, Greed is famous for his Ultimate Shield – a graphene coating that completely covers his body, protecting him from even the most powerful attacks, like those from Father. Breaking through this almost unbreakable defense would take immense strength and precise timing to exploit any weaknesses he might have.
Reiner Braun (Attack on Titan)
In the world of Attack on Titan, Reiner Braun is known among his fellow soldiers as Marley’s Shield, often compared to the powerful ‘Ultimate Shield.’ As a dedicated soldier for Marley, he was one of the Titan shifters responsible for bringing devastation to the people of Paradis.
Reiner Braun controls the Armored Titan, granting him incredible strength and a tough outer layer that can resist even powerful attacks, like those from the Attack Titan. Normal weapons, including cannons, don’t do much damage, particularly when he’s moving quickly. Despite his bulky armor, Reiner is surprisingly agile and quick.
Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)
I still remember how many fans were heartbroken when Itachi Uchiha died in Naruto, especially after we found out the truth about his secret mission and how dedicated he was to protecting Konoha. But even with his tragic end, Itachi is mostly remembered for being an incredibly powerful shinobi with some truly amazing moves that everyone loved.
Itachi Uchiha’s Susanoo is a particularly powerful technique, standing out for its strong offense and defense. It’s equipped with both the Totsuka Sword and the Yata Mirror, which provides exceptional protection against all kinds of attacks, whether they’re physical or based on spiritual energy.
Enjin (Gachiakuta)
Enjin is a newcomer to shonen anime, but he’s likely to become a memorable character in Gachiakuta. He’s got the classic good looks, a relaxed attitude, and a captivating personality. What really sets him apart is his unusual weapon, called a Vital Instrument in the show.
In Gachiakuta, Enjin battles Trash Beasts with a dangerous umbrella called Umbreaker. While it appears worn down at first, the umbrella grows to twice its size and transforms into both a powerful weapon and a solid shield when Enjin fully activates it.
Sado Yasutora (Bleach)
The popular anime Bleach is famous for its strong characters and their unique swords, like those used by Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki. However, it’s also well-known for introducing Sado Yasutora, who fights using a special power called Fullbring. Unlike most fighters in the series who rely on swordsmanship, Sado’s Fullbring ability is incredibly powerful, allowing him to defeat even formidable enemies, including a former Espada.
Sado’s Fullbring ability lets him transform his right arm into a powerful shield that can stop even the most dangerous attacks. The shield gets stronger and tougher the more he wants to protect the people he cares about, like his friends. As long as he stays determined, Sado will truly be a protector using his Fullbring.

Hajrudin (One Piece)
In One Piece, Hajrudin isn’t as famous a shield user as Pearl from the Don Krieg Pirates. While Pearl focuses almost entirely on using his shields for both attack and defense, Hajrudin uses his shield as just one part of his fighting style.
Hajrudin’s shield is a powerful weapon in battle. He used it to easily defeat Ucy at the Corrida Coliseum in Dressrosa and later to overcome Machvise, a member of the Donquixote Pirates. Hajrudin is known as one of the strong giants from Elbaf, though his half-brother Loki is even more powerful and has quickly become a popular character among One Piece fans.
Crust (My Hero Academia)
Man, I’ll never forget Crust from My Hero Academia. What a hero! He gave his life protecting Eraserhead from Shigaraki’s devastating Decay quirk. Even in his final moments, he truly showed what it means to be a pro hero – putting others before himself. It was a really powerful moment, and he’ll always be remembered for his selflessness.
Crust, formerly the sixth-ranked Pro Hero, had a unique defensive ability called Shield. This quirk let him create shields of any size from thin air. He used them for protection, but also as powerful projectiles to attack his enemies.
