2025’s Weirdest Gaming Moments
Assassin’s Creed’s Attack On Titan Crossover
Combining the world of Attack on Titan with Assassin’s Creed was an unusual idea to begin with, but it became even stranger when players started experiencing the new content in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. The content quickly gained attention online, but mostly for negative reasons.
Many players shared frustrating screenshots online after the limited-time event launched. People were disappointed with the content itself, and upset that it was only available for a very short time.
Fortnite’s Darth Vader AI
In May, around the time of Star Wars Day, Disney and Fortnite teamed up again. This collaboration added new content, characters, and outfits to the popular game, including a special mini-season. Players could even team up with Darth Vader, who was brought to life with AI and the authentic voice of James Earl Jones.
It wasn’t surprising when players found ways around Epic Games’ safeguards for the AI voice of a famous character. This quickly led to widely shared clips of the character saying inappropriate things and getting involved in problematic scenarios.
Epic Games hasn’t tried an AI character like that one again, and it’s obvious they need to significantly improve the technology before attempting it in the future.
Mindseye’s Messy Release
With the delay of Grand Theft Auto 6, many gamers were excited about Mindseye as a possible substitute. While it initially seemed promising, Mindseye unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations and ended up being one of the worst games released in 2025.
The game faced widespread criticism for numerous issues, including serious bugs, a weak story, and unlikable characters. Things became even stranger when Mark Gerhard, a co-CEO of the development studio, suggested the negative feedback was the result of a deliberate attempt by an outside group to damage the game and the studio’s reputation.
GTA 5 Becomes Too Realistic
A Grand Theft Auto 5 player got a surprisingly real-life experience when a fleeing virtual car crashed into her house – while she was actively trying to outrun the police in the game at the same time.
Emma Graves described the frightening event to the Yorkshire Evening Post, calling it incredibly ironic and unbelievable. Although it wasn’t amusing at the moment – the crash happened very close to where she was playing – she’s since been able to see the humor in it.
Make FPS Great Again
During Summer Games Fest, Ian Proulx, a founder of 1047 Games, unexpectedly promoted Splitgate 2 while wearing a hat that said “Make FPS Great Again.” He also directly criticized Call of Duty during his presentation. Both the hat and his comments caused a stir online, though Proulx claimed the hat wasn’t intended as a political statement, referencing Donald Trump’s famous campaign slogan.
It’s ironic that Splitgate 2 didn’t succeed in revitalizing the first-person shooter genre. Reviews actually placed it just slightly above the poorly received Black Ops 7, and far behind Battlefield 6. In fact, Battlefield was the game that truly made FPS titles great again.
Miss Piggy & Geoff Keighley Flirting
The playful interaction between Geoff Keighley and Miss Piggy at The Game Awards was surprisingly memorable, especially for viewers watching late at night or early in the morning. Many believe Kermit the Frog wouldn’t have been pleased with their antics.
It was strange enough to see a famous Muppet character flirting, but it became really awkward when Keighley flirted back.
Duck Extraction Shooter Becomes A Quacker
Escape From Duckov might seem like a quirky mobile game ad you’d stumble upon while watching YouTube videos, but it turned out to be a huge hit. It quickly became one of the year’s most popular games and helped solidify the growing popularity of ‘extraction shooter’ games.
Escape From Duckov has become a global hit, attracting millions of players worldwide, including a large fanbase in China. The game has also received very positive reviews on Steam.
A Literal Peanut Shining on The Streaming Stage
Streaming has always been a bit unusual and exciting, but things got even more interesting in 2025 with the rise of TheBurntPeanut. They’ve quickly become incredibly popular, gaining over a million followers on Twitch and almost as many on YouTube.
I was so thrilled when TheBurntPeanut won Best VTuber at the Streamer Awards in 2025! It definitely caused some buzz within the VTuber community, but honestly, it was amazing to see. It just proves how wild and wonderful the streaming world is – who would have thought a silly little peanut could become such a big star? It’s a really inspiring story!
GameStop’s Staplegate
Man, GameStop just keeps finding ways to be in the news, and 2025 was no different. But the biggest drama? Definitely ‘Staplegate.’ After the Switch 2 launched, they started stapling receipts to the console boxes – seriously! – and actually damaged some screens doing it. It was a total mess and everyone was talking about it.
As a Nintendo fan, I wasn’t totally surprised to see one of those leaked Switch 2 prototypes – from the Staplegate incident – sell for a crazy amount of money on eBay, like six figures! It really makes you wonder if the saying ‘any publicity is good publicity’ is actually true in a case like this. It’s wild!
