8-Year-Old Game is Blowing Up on Steam

The stealth horror game Hello Neighbor, originally launched in 2017, recently reached a record number of players on Steam after a significant price drop. The game has gained a following for its unique combination of playful graphics and intense, scary chases, but the recent surge in players seems to be largely due to the attractive discount offered on Steam.

Since its release, Hello Neighbor has received very mixed reactions. While it was highly anticipated in 2017, many players were disappointed by its unpredictable enemy behavior, lack of tension, and a storyline that didn’t fully capture their interest. The game follows a teen who breaks into his neighbor’s house to uncover the truth behind his neighbor’s daughter’s death. Critics haven’t been impressed – it has an 8% recommendation rate on OpenCritic – and general player reception has been similarly lukewarm, except on Steam, where it surprisingly enjoys an 83% satisfaction rate.

Hello Neighbor Hits New Player High 8 Years After Launch

Even though opinions on Hello Neighbor are quite divided among horror game fans, the game recently reached its highest-ever number of concurrent players on Steam. On March 22nd, Steam Charts recorded 2,076 players online at the same time. This surpassed the previous peak of just under 1,400 players, which happened in November 2017, right before the game’s official release after being in early access. Typically, older games only see this kind of jump in players when a significant update is released, but the last update for this cartoon-style horror game was back in October 2019.

The recent jump in popularity for the game Hello Neighbor appears to be due to a massive sale. Normally priced at $29.99, the game is currently available for under $3 – a 90% discount. This sale coincided with the start of the Steam Spring Sale on March 19th, and player numbers began to climb immediately. While the peak number of players dropped slightly after March 22nd (a Sunday), it’s remained consistently high, exceeding 1,600 players each day – surpassing the game’s previous record from 2017. Over 100,000 copies have reportedly been sold in the past week because of the deal.

Data shows that much of the current interest in Hello Neighbor comes from new players. If you’re enjoying the first game, the 2022 sequel is also on sale! While the original game has a bigger discount, you can get Hello Neighbor 2 for $9.99. The sequel was generally better received by both players and critics, thanks to improved enemy behavior and level design. The sale has tripled the game’s daily player count, though it hasn’t reached its all-time high.

The Steam Spring Sale is happening now and will last until March 26th at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. You can find significant discounts on hundreds of PC games. If you’re interested in games like the Hello Neighbor series, or other discounted titles, it’s best to shop quickly. Popular indie horror games are also on sale, including Project Zomboid (33% off), Dead by Daylight (60% off), and Sons of the Forest (70% off), among many others.
