In early 2023, Antimatter Games, a renowned British studio known for its contributions to the realistic niche of first-person shooters, particularly for games like Rising Storm and Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, ceased operations due to cost-cutting measures implemented by its higher management.
When it was terminated, the studio located in Truro was engaged in the development of two significant projects: a revival of the I.G.I. espionage series, and the ’83 tactical shooter set during the Cold War.
Though I.G.I. (Initial Global Insurrection) appears to be buried in the past, ’83 has discovered a fresh setting that may seem unusual at first glance but eventually feels quite homely.
As part of the Antimatter Games crew, I’ve joined forces with some seasoned vets from Tripwire Interactive to carry on our work on ’83. Now, under the new banner of Blue Dot Games, we’ve struck a deal with Enad Global 7 to officially take the reins of this project.
The team from 1983 has revealed that their revival project is expected to launch in the year 2026, marking a significant delay from the initial speculation of an early 2024 release, during which doubts about the existence of ’83 were prevalent.
What’s Next For ’83?
According to the developer’s blog post from earlier this month, Blue Dot Games revealed that the game underwent eight rounds of community playtesting. Although some server performance problems were identified during these tests, they have now been resolved.
The studio continues to emphasize their aim for consistently smooth 75-player battles, with earlier discussions pointing towards potentially expanding this to 100 players.
Over the course of January, Blue Dot Games predominantly focused on establishing a fresh animation system and fine-tuning weapon mechanics, synchronizing the animations with the latest game model in the process.
In about a month, the developers aim to complete integrating Nanite and Virtual Shadow Maps, both accessible through Unreal 5’s toolkit. Additionally, our game ’83 is set to adopt the IRIS networking infrastructure offered by the engine, which the developers anticipate will ensure seamless performance at the anticipated player levels.
It’s anticipated that by the end of February, the team will unveil a complete demonstration of the ’83 gameplay mechanics, which were hinted at in the trailer. This presentation should take place on the Duga map, offering an exciting prospect for STALKER 2 enthusiasts.
Meanwhile, optimization work continues, as well as determining the ideal user hardware specifications based on their potential system profiles to establish the minimum requirements.
A promising beginning to the year for a game teetering on the edge of oblivion for quite some time now, let’s hope that ’83 turns out to be well-crafted and polished, offering some challenge to ARMA Reforger in the niche of Cold War tactical shooters.
