As per a post on LinkedIn from the cybersecurity firm Underdark, it appears that information from around 89 million Steam accounts is being offered for sale on the dark web at a price of $5,000. This data includes personal details like phone numbers, user records, temporary access codes, SMS message histories, and other sensitive information. Users are advised to change their passwords, activate two-factor authentication, and watch out for suspicious emails or potential phishing attempts. Although the data breach seems to have occurred through a third-party vendor rather than Steam itself, there’s been a call for Valve to strengthen security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. At the time of this writing, Valve has not issued a statement regarding the matter.

Regrettably, it’s quite frequent that data breaches occur within the gaming industry. Recently, Grinding Gear Games disclosed that their action RPG, Path of Exile 2, experienced a data breach when an unauthorized third party gained access to one of their developers’ admin accounts. Similarly, in 2024, Game Freak acknowledged a data breach that led to the acquisition of large amounts of Pokemon data, including details about unreleased games, source code for various past releases, and personnel information. Notably, Sony, Insomniac, Ubisoft, and many others have also fallen victim to cyberattacks in recent times.

Despite a steady influx of users daily, Valve has recently faced turbulent times. Following the official announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 in January, sales of Steam Deck started to decline significantly. Originally ranked #3 on the Steam Charts, it dropped to #47. Since its launch in 2022, approximately four million units of the handheld console have been sold.
