Despite overcoming incredible challenges in Dragon Quest, forging alliances from enemies, and pushing himself to the absolute limit, he’s faced with one last, devastating choice to save everyone. He ultimately sacrifices his own life to defeat Vearn and secure a future for his friends and the world – and he succeeds. The 100th episode, like the 37th volume of the original manga, marked a poignant end, finishing with a powerful image of Dai’s sword – a lasting symbol of a true hero.
Death Note
Death Note stands out as an anime where a surprising number of characters, including the main one, meet their end – possibly more than in any other series. Given the title includes the word ‘Death,’ it’s not unexpected! From the beginning of Death Note, we know Light Yagami is on a path that will inevitably lead to his demise, and the series plays out that certainty.
Beyond the main character, Light, Death Note also surprisingly killed off a key supporting character. These unexpected deaths contributed significantly to the series’ massive popularity, solidifying its place as a landmark manga and anime. The author’s willingness to take such a risk was especially notable, considering Death Note was published in Shonen Jump, a magazine known for long-running, action-packed series like Dragon Ball and One Piece. His death leaves a profound sense of loss for both those who knew him in the story and the audience watching. It’s a bittersweet moment, leaving viewers with a complex mix of emotions. As the story concludes, the world of Attack on Titan is moving towards a future where the Titans are finally relegated to a sorrowful chapter in history.
Touch
Growing up in the 80s, no one anticipated that a baseball anime would be so emotionally impactful. Yet, that’s precisely what happened with Touch. Created by Mitsuru Adachi, it followed his earlier successes, Hiatari Ryoko! and Miyuki, both of which had gained popularity on Western television and helped introduce anime to a wider audience. However, Touch arrived and fundamentally shifted the landscape.
In the 25th episode of the anime Touch, a major character, Kazuya Uesugi, passes away. Kazuya is the older and seemingly perfect Uesugi brother, always supportive of those around him. Ultimately, Lelouch’s death serves as a strong and effective storytelling tool.
Inuyashiki
Despite only lasting 11 episodes when it first came out in 2017, Inuyashiki is a truly excellent anime. It’s a powerful and emotional story, and like many others on this list, its main character dies at the very end.
Following a series of clashes between Inuyashiki, an elderly cyborg, and the villainous Shishigami, both men begin to find meaning in their lives. Shishigami, with the help of others, even starts to see a hopeful future. However, their newfound peace is shattered when a meteor threatens to destroy Earth. Shishigami initially plans to sacrifice himself to stop it, but Inuyashiki realizes he must also make the ultimate sacrifice to save the planet.
Akame ga Kill!
Tatsumi, the swordsman, is a true hero throughout this anime series, which first aired in 2015. Over 24 episodes, the show explores a compelling story filled with intense battles, heartbreaking tragedy, and constant conflict.
During the climactic battle, the hero understands that unleashing the full power of his ability would be devastating to his body. Despite this, he realizes it’s the only way to win and save lives. By pushing his ability to its absolute limit, he defeats the Emperor and rescues people from the massive Shikoutazer. Afterwards, he apologizes for breaking a promise and dies peacefully, held by Akame. Tragically, his body is later destroyed by Esdeath, adding another layer of grief to his passing.
Tomorrow’s Joe
There’s ongoing debate among fans about whether Joe Yabuki, the central character in Ashita no Joe, actually died after his final boxing match. However, it’s widely accepted as the story’s intended conclusion, and a fitting end to his challenging life. Joe was a relatable and inspiring figure, embodying the peak of human resilience and the power to overcome incredible obstacles.
I’m still reeling from Joe’s story. He really chased his dream – to live and die as a boxer, to give absolutely everything he had in the ring. It’s heartbreaking, though, because he sacrificed so much – his relationships, a chance at a normal, happy life. Knowing he was battling the effects of countless punches, that final fight had to be it, win or lose. And honestly, the way the anime ended – with that music and those flashes of him smiling while sitting in his corner – it just perfectly captured everything about him, the glory and the tragedy of his unwavering dedication. It was a beautiful, devastating conclusion.
