Initial encounters significantly shape how an audience perceives a character; they are crucial moments that can either strengthen or weaken a character’s image. If the character holds significant importance, it’s essential to present them engaging in impactful actions on stage to drive home their significance.
As a devoted anime enthusiast, I can’t help but share my awe for these eight unforgettable characters who have left an indelible mark on the world of anime. Their strength, not just physical, but also emotional and intellectual, is one of the key reasons they have become cultural icons.
8. Zero
Code Geass
The entrance of Zero in Code Geass is still considered one of the most memorable scenes in anime lore. Upon our initial encounter with this character, he presents as an enigmatic individual perched atop a vehicle, his identity hidden behind a striking mask of black and purple.
In a scene filled with high tension, preparations for a public execution were underway, with the British army encircling Japanese insurgents. But all eyes turned when an intriguing individual made their appearance, captivating everyone simply by their very presence.
The strength of Zero’s introduction lies in the striking difference between his public image and his real self. To the world, he appears as an influential revolutionary figure, full of grand actions and eloquent speeches. However, hidden beneath this mask is Lelouch Lamperouge, a high school student who secretly harbors a deep grudge against the Britannian Empire.
Initially, he delivers his statements with dramatic panache, targeting the core of the repressive government, and extending optimism to the suppressed Japanese populace.
7. Karma Akabane
Assassination classroom

Following his suspension due to aggressive actions, Karma nonchalantly walks back into school, flaunting vibrant red hair and a playful grin that seems to foreshadow the trouble he’s planning to stir up.
What stands out about his introduction is that he cleverly lays a trap from the moment he meets Koro-sensei. Pretending politeness, Karma offers a friendly handshake. However, poor Koro-sensei doesn’t suspect a thing as he reaches out with his tentacle – but it explodes on contact with Karma’s hand!
In that astonishing instant, it becomes clear that Karma had hidden pieces of an anti-Koro-sensei knife on his hand during their greeting. As Koro-sensei is yet to fully comprehend this unexpected assault, Karma swiftly launches a genuine anti-Koro-sensei knife towards his teacher in the next moment. Although Koro-sensei skillfully dodged the second strike with his extraordinary speed, the harm to his dignity had already been inflicted.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at this unexpected ambush, which showcases not only Karma’s readiness for unscrupulous combat but also his profound strategic acumen. Unlike most students, who were trying conventional assassination strategies, Karma has shown an ingenious approach that sets him apart.
6. Mirio Togata
My Hero Academia

In My Hero Academia, the character Mirio Togata was introduced in a manner that truly encapsulated his distinct persona. The “Big Three” from U.A. High School were often referenced beforehand, creating a buzz around their eventual appearance. When Mirio eventually joined Class 1-A for their meeting, he made a striking entrance by passing right through a wall, instantly showcasing his extraordinary ability.
The scene that unfolds is surprisingly amusing, for Mirio’s unique ability makes his clothes vanish, leaving him exposed before the dumbfounded students. This humorous incident soon transforms into astonishment as Mirio, without a student managing to land a single blow, effortlessly overpowers the entire class in combat practice.
His introduction strikes a fine blend of humor and demonstrating exceptional talent, making him seem both accessible and extraordinarily potent.
5. Manjiro Sano
Tokyo Revengers

In Tokyo Revengers, Manjiro “Mikey” Sano is introduced with an imposing reputation that sets the stage even before he’s seen. A fierce battle between Takemichi and Kiyomasa is interrupted by the arrival of motorcycles, causing Kiyomasa to quiver in fear. Mikey, accompanied by his second-in-command Draken, then makes a dramatic entrance with other delinquents clearing a path for them.
In spite of his petite build and youthful appearance, Mikey exudes a sense of tranquil dominance in the situation. Instead of reprimanding Takemichi for causing a commotion, he watches with increasing curiosity. When Kiyomasa attempts to clarify, Mikey cuts him off, showing appreciation for Takemichi’s tenacity.
Unexpectedly, Mikey shows respect towards Takemichi by giving him a new moniker, “Takemitchy.
In this scene, I found myself laughing since the most powerful character approached the least formidable individual, praised his tenacity, and came up with an amusing nickname for him. I’ve shared this observation in hopes of gathering other perspectives on how they interpreted this particular moment.
4. Kokushibo
Demon Slayer

In Demon Slayer, Kokushibo’s introduction showcases an impressive display of authority. As the Upper Moon One, the most powerful demon under Muzan Kibutsuji, his presence at the Upper Moon gathering leaves even the toughest demons trembling with fear.
The true extent of Akaza’s power unfolds in a heart-stopping instant. As reckless as ever, Upper Moon Three, Akaza, lunges to attack another demon. However, Kokushibo responds with shocking swiftness. In the twinkling of an eye, his sword is already out, and before anyone can fully grasp what transpired, Akaza’s hand has been cleanly severed.
In Kokushibo’s deeds, there’s no trace of anger, only unwavering, meticulous precision. Akaza, who is typically rebellious and bold, remains silent. He acknowledges the reprimand without a word, understanding all too well the immense chasm separating him from the one towering over him.
3. Future Trunks
Dragon Ball Z

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at how Dragon Ball Z introduced one of the most iconic characters with Future Trunks. In an anime brimming with formidable fighters, Trunks, arriving from the future in a time machine, instantly stood out as a fresh and unique addition to the franchise.
The story kicks off as he squares off against Frieza and King Cold. With unexpected swiftness, Trunks morphs into a Super Saiyan (a transformation only Goku had managed at that point) and effortlessly defeats both antagonists, leaving everyone speechless with amazement.
2. L Lawliet
Death Note

In Death Note, the character of L Lawliet was introduced in such a manner that effortlessly set up the intricate cat-and-mouse chase that became the heart of the story. Prior to his first physical appearance, L establishes himself through a public showdown on television with Light Yagami, questioning the enigmatic Kira who has been eradicating criminals across the globe.
In Japan, they use a stand-in to deceive Light into disclosing his location, showcasing L’s extraordinary intellect at work. When L personally shows up at Light’s university, his unusual appearance – stooped posture, loose clothing, and dark glasses – starkly contrasts with the polished, model student image of Light.
1. Madra Uchiha
Naruto Shippuden

Before Madara Uchiha actually appeared, Naruto Shippuden had already established his reputation as a legendary figure from times past. His name alone carried significant influence across the ninja world, often spoken about with reverence. When he finally stepped onto the battlefield during the Fourth Great Ninja War, the reality of who he was surpassed even the myths that surrounded him.
At a point when the Allied Ninja Coalition thinks they have the advantage over the reanimated shinobi, Madara unexpectedly appears, causing the balance to swing dramatically. With just one man, he engages an entire division of the ninja alliance, demonstrating abilities and power that seem beyond belief.
Even the most powerful ninjas respond with shock and fear, with several commenting that the histories failed to capture just how terrifying Madara truly is.
