This game combines elements of precision platforming, Metroidvania exploration, and the challenging style of “Souls-like” games. It is tough, so expect to die frequently. If you fail to return to where you perished, you’ll lose any upgrade materials you might have collected there.

The gameplay could use a bit of easing up, but overall, it’s an exceptional title and a secret jewel worth exploring in the PlayStation Plus Collection.

Awful Name, Great Game

If the title of this game initially didn’t appeal to you, I completely understand why, considering its unique name might have kept you at a distance for a while. However, after finally giving it a try, I must say that I’m really pleased I did, as it turned out to be an action-packed Metroidvania that was well worth exploring.

Although its title may sound unpleasant, the narrative inside is exceptionally well-crafted and structured, boasting stunning graphics and sound effects that complement it beautifully. Interestingly, it also features voice acting, which isn’t common in games of this kind.

Experience an engaging blend of intense battles, a vast, gradually unveiling world spanning approximately 15 hours, and a good deal of gameplay versatility, all of which make for an immersive experience that’s definitely worth exploring!

This game has some rough spots and its level of challenge can be inconsistent at times. However, the positives definitely overshadow the negatives. Therefore, I strongly recommend giving it a solid try if you get the chance.

3. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

As Close To Modern Castlevania As You’ll Get

It’s unusual to find a genuine Castlevania game and a game that carries on its legacy side by side on this list, but surprisingly, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night outshines the other. However, it’s important to acknowledge that Bloodstained is one of the finest Castlevania games ever made, if you don’t mind playing as characters other than Simon Belmont.

It’s likely that this game stands out due to its creator, Koji Igarashi, who is well-known for his work on Castlevania. He has skillfully blended classic Castlevania elements while simultaneously establishing a distinct identity for the Bloodstained series through innovative features and an intriguing environment.

This game offers numerous build possibilities due to its collection of weapons, add-ons, and shards. The exploration is engaging because of the diverse biomes and seamlessly connected map, making it feel like you’re playing everything a contemporary Castlevania title would provide. Unfortunately, it seems we may never see a true sequel in this series.

As a dedicated fan, I must admit that there are areas where the leadership could improve, but beyond that critique, this game is simply fantastic! It skillfully honors its Castlevania legacy, all the while innovating and propelling the genre to new heights.

A Metroidbrainia That’s Actually A Metroidvania

Our second place winner isn’t anyone else but the game titled “Metroidbrainia,” which made a significant impact on the independent gaming world back in 2024. This enigmatic collection, famously known as “Animal Well,” caught everyone’s attention.

Animal Well is a game where you not only discover new lands and abilities but also gain wisdom and insight. These skills aid in your continued education, yet your sharp intellect is crucial for solving puzzles and advancing further in the game.

In this game, the layout and aesthetic are astounding, and the feeling of liberty it offers is truly remarkable. The focus on allowing players to explore and discover things for themselves is unparalleled here. While some less tolerant players might find it challenging, those who appreciate the gradual build-up will be richly rewarded in the end.

In 2024, if not for an unexpected victory tale like that of Balatro, Animal Well could have easily won the title of indie game of the year. This, among other factors, makes it a game worth playing in the Metroidvania genre.

I often point out that no other Metroidvania can truly be compared to Hollow Knight, as honestly, just about everything else seems insignificant when held up against such a remarkable masterpiece.

This particular Metroidvania game captivates players, drawing them in initially with its charming aesthetics and meticulously constructed environment. However, many find themselves continuing their journey not just for the visual appeal, but also to conquer the demanding platforming and battle challenges the game presents.

Boasting an array of outstanding 2D boss battles, iconic scenes and settings that stand out in Metroidvania lore, and a delightful protagonist to boot, Hollow Knight offers everything one might desire in a game.

The exceptional nature of Silksong might explain why its release keeps getting delayed in order to create room for a follow-up that can live up to this quality. This delay has certainly been painful, but if the resulting product is even close to the original, it will have been well worth the wait.
