Summary
- Ellie decides to go on a solo revenge mission to Seattle despite the town’s decision against it.
- Ellie’s journey to Seattle is shown in the TV show, unlike in The Last of Us Part 2 game.
- The episode’s inclusion of montage footage suggests Ellie and Dina’s journey took time and effort, contrary to the game’s simplicity.
In episode 3 of HBO’s “The Last of Us” season 2, we delve into the aftermath of the assault on Jackson and the heartbreaking killing of one of its cherished residents. The pacing is deliberate, introducing scenes not found in the original game. The majority of this episode revolves around the town’s dilemma about whether to depart from Jackson and seek vengeance against Abby and the WLF. A three-week time gap between episodes 2 and 3 is implied, during which Ellie was healing in the hospital, while Jackson citizens were mourning their losses and rebuilding their community.
In the episode, Dina confesses to Ellie, upon her hospital discharge, that she had been keeping crucial details from both Ellie and the entire town – information such as the identities of Abby’s group and their militia affiliation. Dina admits that if she had shared this knowledge earlier, Ellie might have removed her tubes and fled the hospital to seek vengeance (a plausible assumption). The revelation sparks a town meeting where residents decide on their next course of action, which ultimately addresses one of the most significant narrative inconsistencies in the video game The Last of Us.
The Town Vote

During the midpoint of Episode 3, the community convenes to discuss various viewpoints and debates on the appropriate action to take next. Ellie is among those called upon, and following Jesse’s advice, she jots down her thoughts instead of impulsively expressing herself, as she acknowledges might lead to emotional outbursts that could weaken her argument. In essence, she aims to avoid letting anger control the conversation. Her heartfelt speech inspires Jackson to consider their community as a collective responsible for supporting one another, given they inhabit a world where accountability is scarce. Ellie advocates that Jackson should strive to be better and seeking revenge for Joel could serve as proof of their resilience and responsibility towards their people.
Despite Ellie’s passionate speech managing to capture the attention of the town hall, the vote ultimately resulted in 8 votes against and just 3 in favor. While it’s possible that Maria, Tommy, and Jesse were among the three who voted yes, the episode doesn’t confirm this fact. Regardless, Ellie’s speech didn’t seem to sway the people of Jackson to her side on the issue. However, being the determined character she is, Ellie disregards the town’s decision and decides instead to embark on a solo quest for revenge in Seattle.
Ellie’s “Travel Preparation”

Following the town council’s decision, Ellie is spotted in her garage workshop, preparing with Joel’s revolver and several other weapons. At this juncture, Dina enters and begins to question the logic behind Ellie’s hastily conceived strategy. She teases Ellie by inquiring about their intended route, to which Ellie simply replies “Northwest.” Dina then presses on by asking if their arsenal of guns includes any medical supplies, considering they might need them if they “…take a tumble on an ankle, or catch a fever on your journey Northwest.” This could be the writers poking fun at the game The Last of Us Part 2, and one of its more notable plot inconsistencies.
In The Last of Us Part 1, Joel and Ellie embarked on an arduous trek across America in search of the fireflies. Their journey was fraught with challenges due to the post-apocalyptic landscape and the numerous threats they encountered along the way, such as infected creatures and hostile groups. This made it seem quite incongruous when Ellie and Dina seemingly arrived effortlessly in Seattle from Jackson in Part 2, given that this journey would have spanned nearly a thousand miles. Ellie’s journal entries in the game do provide some insights into their perilous journey, including battles with hostile groups and camping together. However, these details might be overlooked by many players, and even when noticed, the ease of their journey seems somewhat out of place considering the gritty, challenging world portrayed in Part 1.
Ellie And Dina’s Journey

Unlike just watching the game, in Episode 3, I got to join Ellie and Dina on their thrilling trek towards Seattle! They gallop on horseback through various states, sharing laughter and engaging in playful travel activities. In one dramatic scene, they set up a tent and huddle together for safety during a fierce storm – a testament to the numerous perils Dina had warned Ellie about. This journey clearly demonstrates that HBO is meticulously crafting this storyline, taking their time to ensure a captivating narrative. With Part 2 anticipated to span several seasons on television, there’s no rush; they’re carefully pacing the tale to avoid any confusion and deliver an immersive experience instead.
Despite the fact that the TV show “The Last of Us” dedicates only a brief amount of time, roughly 6 minutes in Episode 3, to showing Ellie and Dina’s journey to Seattle, this portrayal gives a stronger sense of post-Cordyceps America compared to the game. The use of montage footage suggests that their journey was lengthy and arduous, even though it is relatively straightforward on screen.
