Destiny 2 Forgetting Caiatl? Why One of Its Best Characters Deserves a Major Comeback

The upcoming chapters for Destiny 2 post Episode Heresy are filled with intrigue and uncertainty, as various characters make their appearance before The Edge of Fate. The following storyline may send Guardians venturing beyond the Solar System’s borders, potentially aided by The Nine. This elusive group composed of space dust and dark matter has taken a backseat in recent years regarding the narrative, but they aren’t the only faction that needs to re-emerge prominently.

As we approached the release of “The Final Shape“, an unexpectedly friendly aspect of the Cabal was introduced to players, potentially turning them into allies. Before this expansion, there was a sense that the narrative was focusing on the Vanguard forging new alliances with formerly hostile extraterrestrial factions such as the Eliksni, Lucent Hive and the Cabal. Now, in “Destiny 2“, one of its beloved alien characters is set to return, a character whose story extends far beyond the Sol system.

Destiny 2 Needs to Bring Back Caiatl and Her Cabal

In Season of the Chosen, Caiatl entered the scene, leaving a lasting impression on many game enthusiasts, even spawning a popular meme from her initial cutscene. However, it wasn’t just memes that made her stand out; Caiatl represented a fresh type of adversary, showing that not all enemies of the Vanguard were mustache-twirling villains. In fact, a significant portion of the season’s narrative focused on her transformation from an antagonist to an ally, making for one of the most memorable seasonal story arcs.

In Destiny 2, Caiatl presented an alternate perspective to Calus, the final significant Cabal figure that players had previously engaged with. She was firm, straightforward, yet open to compromise. Unlike Calus’ games which were frequently perceived as a diversion, with the exiled emperor favoring indulgence, Caiatl showcased a different facet of the faction – one riddled with moral ambiguity, desperation, and remorse. The narrative of the Duality dungeon centered around these themes, exploring the emotional turmoil between her and her father, and the deep-seated anguish they harbored towards each other.

Caiatl’s Story Should Take Her Back to Torobatl

Ever since I, Caiatl, joined forces with the Vanguard, there’s been a lot to uncover about why I sought out the Solar system in the first place. My home planet, Torobatl, was brutally attacked by the Hive god Xivu Arath, leaving my Cabal people defeated and devastated on our battlefield. Despite being renowned for war, we were bested by Xivu Arath. This left us with no choice but to follow Calus’ path.

Ever since then, the shadow of Xivu Arath has hung over my story, making players wonder if one day they might get a chance to explore Torobatl in the game itself.

Regrettably, Caiatl’s significance within the narrative has noticeably decreased since Season of the Haunted. Although she occasionally makes appearances in Neomuna and The Pale Heart, her role is more supportive than leading, with minimal focus on her personal story. Her emotional response to Calus’ demise in Lightfall was heartfelt, yet the depth of her grief wasn’t fully explored. After Calus passed away, Caiatl’s importance within the plot significantly reduced.

The character Caiatl is particularly suitable for upcoming “Destiny 2” expansions, such as “The Edge of Fate“, because her desire to depart from the Solar System and return home adds an intriguing dimension to her role. Although the exact destination for Guardians remains unknown, it’s likely that Bungie will maintain some mystery, even at launch. However, one thing is certain – Caiatl’s unresolved business back home necessitates her presence in future content.
