A fresh game titled GearGrit on Kickstarter showcases designs and functions reminiscent of the widely acclaimed PlayStation 2 game, Jak 2. This project is primarily being crafted by just two creators. With the generosity of Kickstarter supporters, the action-platformer indie game inspired by Jak 2 has successfully reached its funding goal.
The second installment in the well-known “Jak and Daxter” series, titled “Jak 2“, was unveiled for the PlayStation 2 in 2003 by Naughty Dog. Unlike its predecessor, this edition adopted a more somber mood and introduced a semi-open world that players can traverse using different vehicles, causing some to liken it to “Grand Theft Auto“. In addition to its platforming stages, the game offers various firing modes and a mission structure that guides players through the city during their playthrough. Over time, “Jak 2” has gained cult classic status, and now an independent developer is incorporating some of its concepts into a fresh project.
The game titled “GearGrit” is a self-produced action-platformer that has been under development since 2023 and is currently seeking financial support via Kickstarter. The first of its four funding milestones, “Funded,” was successfully reached with an amount of $25,000. In this game, players follow the story of Tansy Geargrit, a character falsely accused of a crime and marked as an outlaw by the government. Players will have to navigate and overcome obstacles within “GearGrit”, exploring its semi-open world which is said to be reminiscent of PlayStation 2 games.
Jak 2-Inspired GearGrit Release Window Set for December 2027
GearGrit reintroduces numerous aspects reminiscent of the Jak and Daxter franchise, particularly from Jak 2. This promises an immersive platforming adventure emphasizing movement, enabling players to gather speed through leaps, spins, and other maneuvers. Additionally, it offers a gratifying combat system that blends close-quarters attacks with gunplay mechanics. Other additions will be optional challenge modes, time trials, racing mini-games involving vehicles, and a Wanted system where law enforcement pursues players once they’ve broken the law.
Although we’ve already hit our initial Kickstarter target, we’ll keep fundraising for another 26 days (ending on June 1). There are still three more funding tiers to unlock: a Hair Salon ($30,000), New Game++ with new challenges ($35,000), and customizable vehicles ($40,000). If we surpass this amount, the developer plans to add even more features. Contributors to the development of GearGrit, inspired by PlayStation 2 titles, can look forward to both physical and digital rewards. At the moment, our aim is a release window of December 2027, but keep in mind that delays may occur.
