Ecco The Dolphin Is Being Remastered

Summary

  • Ecco the Dolphin franchise is making a comeback with remasters and a third entry.
  • New Ecco game continues the story from original games, following the Genesis sequel.
  • The design of the third game may be influenced by the reception of remasters.

In this contemporary period, one of Sega’s previously sleepy series is being reawakened: Ecco the Dolphin is making its comeback, featuring updated versions and a new installment that picks up where the initial narrative left off.

One unusual game from the 16-bit era is Ecco the Dolphin. In this game, you assume the role of the title sea creature, tasked with safeguarding the planet against alien invasions. The Ecco series stands out for some particularly challenging levels, even compared to other tough games on systems like the SNES and Sega Genesis.

Since the year 2000, there hasn’t been a fresh installment of the Ecco game series, but that’s going to be rectified soon. In an interview on Xbox Wire (as reported by Gematsu), the creator of the series, Ed Anunziata, has disclosed that the first two Ecco the Dolphin games are being revamped, with a third one in development, and he will be involved in this project. All these updates will be unveiled on April 25 at the new Ecco the Dolphin website.

Ecco Is Finally Returning

Essentially, there have been numerous Ecco the Dolphin games, however, two of them are educational and entertaining (edutainment), while the one released in 2000 was a reboot for the Dreamcast platform, reviving the franchise. The statement by Annunziata calling the upcoming game the “third” game indicates it will follow on from the second game that was developed for the Sega Genesis.

The topic at hand is how a revamped version of Ecco the Dolphin could appear. Enhancements to graphics and sound are straightforward, but the challenge lies in adapting the gameplay for today’s gaming standards. Ideally, both remasters will make the experience less demanding.

Apart from speculating about its storyline, there’s also curiosity about how the third game will appear visually. Will it stick with the 2D aesthetic of the originals, or will it transition to a 3D format similar to the Dreamcast version? The response to the remasters could significantly impact the design of the third game, given that fans of today might appreciate the classic 2D art style.
