Review: Is The Gryphon Worth It?

In the game Destiny 2, a fresh addition is here: The Gryphon, a personal ride equipped with weaponry similar to Fallen Spears and Cabal Missiles.

The fresh material in Destiny 2 consistently sparks excitement, particularly when it introduces innovative ways to explore the world. Last year’s Guardian Games introduced us to Skimmers, which not only expanded our movement options but also allowed us to briefly fulfill our dreams of being Cloud Striders.

Aside from the Gryphon, there’s another exciting addition – a brand new Player versus Player (PvP) mode titled “Heavy Metal”. In this mode, two groups of three players engage in intense mechanized combat against one another.

In this explanation, you’ll discover the method for opening the freshly introduced Gryphon automobile. Simultaneously, it serves as a tutorial for mastering the latest Heavy Metal game style.

As soon as you launch your game, it quickly informs you about the Heavy Metal theme and the prizes awaiting you upon participation.

Stick to the guidelines for this quest. The directions given are simple and clear: You’ll be asked to perform Heavy Metal, use some re-roll tokens when necessary, and receive additional easy-to-understand instructions along the way.

Once you’ve completed the questline, you’re free to do whatever you like.

Heavy Metal

The “Heavy Metal” game mode will be accessible exclusively between May 9th, 2025, and July 15th, 2025.

As for whether Bungie will provide further updates in the coming weeks, it’s important to note that the fundamental nature of this game mode can be thought of as a variant of Supremacy featuring Fallen Brigs and Drake Tanks.

For both vehicles, you’ll find fundamental mobility, main and auxiliary shooting functions, as well as a dodge action. Nevertheless, they exhibit subtle variations in their movement efficiency and the manner in which their auxiliary firing operates.

Both of these vehicles discharge a cannonball that moves along a straight trajectory. Similarly, their secondary weapon system functions in much the same way. These are guided missiles with moderate homing capabilities, which typically take a moment to acquire a target before striking.

General Tips & Tricks

Following a stretch of several hours spent on Heavy Metal gameplay, I’ve unearthed some useful strategies and techniques that can boost your chances of triumphing in Heavy Metal contests.

Lead your shots. If your opponent is moving sideways, try to get a sense of how far they are and compensate for the travel time of your projectiles.
Be as unpredictable as possible with your movement. Dodge in directions your opponents wouldn’t expect, and juke your opponents by stopping when they think they have a bead on you.
Cover management is key. Because you can’t heal or dodge all the bullets, you’ll need to get behind solid cover to stay alive a little longer.
Stick with your team. It’s better to take out an enemy in a 2v1 than trade in a 1v1 and lose the chance to score.
Save your secondary attack for when you’re sure that you’re going to eliminate your opponent. The only way you can get your charge is to respawn or pick up a medal.
Pick up your teammates’ medals when they die. This will deny your opponents a point.
Ambushes are your friend. Landing a surprise shot on your enemy can vastly increase your chances of winning a fight rather than facing them head-on.
The Drake Tank is significantly harder to drive than the Brig. If you boost on a ramp, there’s a very real chance that you’ll flip, giving your opponents precious extra seconds for them to defeat you.
Alternatively, the Fallen Brig is much more agile with a stronger boost, but is a much larger target.

Event Card

On the quest tab, you’ll find the Event Card, which will reveal everything you can unlock.

Initially, you’ll encounter tasks, some on a daily basis and others weekly. By successfully finishing these tasks, you’ll gain tokens and experience points for the event, which in turn will help you climb up the ranks. As the names imply, these tasks refresh every day and every week.

Completing a daily task advances one level, while achieving a weekly goal typically fills between two to three levels.

15 levels await you on the progression path, where you can advance. As you make your way along this path, you’ll accumulate resources for upgrades, decryption keys (engrams), and tokens that enable you to modify a challenge should it not meet your preferences.

After the conclusion of the event, you’ll find the Gryphon vehicle. If you can’t wait and wish to acquire it sooner, you have the option to pay 100 Silver per rank until you reach a total of 1500 Silver.

Event Rewards

Apart from the main event lineup, I can’t wait to discover more about the Triumphs and Seal related to Heavy Metal! It seems only four are necessary to uncover the Seal so far, but the remaining mysteries still remain hidden.

There is also a section where you can buy items with tokens you’ve earned from challenges.

You can acquire Heavy Metal engrams during this event, which include the Palindrome (a type of hand cannon), Cruoris FR4 (a fusion rifle), Boondoggle Mk.55 (an SMG), and the Lotus-Eater (a rocket sidearm) as contents.

These weapons are obtained through performing rituals such as Vanguard missions and Nightfalls, with Palindrome and Lotus-Eater being standout examples among these activities. Notably, there are also advanced versions of both weapons, known as the Adept Palindrome and Adept Lotus-Eater.

Should you not intend to cultivate Nightfalls, then Heavy Metal engrams might serve as a suitable substitute. The Cruoris FR4 and Boondoggle Mk.55 aren’t particularly effective weapons, so it’s advisable not to rely on them.

Review: Is The Gryphon Worth It?

Yes. Absolutely.

Although a Gryphon moves much more slowly compared to a Sparrow or a Skimmer, it boasts greater durability and carries weaponry.

Rather than jumping straight into top speed, it requires a moment to build up power before reaching maximum velocity. You might think of it as the Guardian’s equivalent of the Cabal Interceptor.

This weapon’s main attack disperses a shotgun-like projectile that inflicts physical damage. It boasts reasonable force and reach, making it effective against lesser opponents. It certainly packs a punch, leaving their health bars noticeably depleted.

The secondary fire is its area of excellence. It launches two homing projectiles. While these cause relatively little damage to opponents, they are employed strategically to apply elemental effects, which vary based on the Guardian’s active super ability.
