Rust Is Leaving PS4 and Xbox One—Here’s What Console Gamers Need to Know

Summary

  • Rust for PS4 and Xbox One will be removed from online storefronts on May 29, 2025, making way for a summer 2025 upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series verisons.
  • An event is planned for the final wipe in October.
  • There have been mixed reactions to the news. Some are disappointed, while others are excited about the future of Rust on improved consoles.

The creator behind the popular survival game Rust has disclosed that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game will soon be removed from digital marketplaces. Initially released by Facepunch Studios on PC in 2018, Rust was later adapted for consoles in 2021 through a collaboration with Double Eleven, enabling players on these platforms to experience its distinctive take on survival gameplay.

In spite of intense competition from multiple emerging and established rivals within the survival game niche, the game Rust has managed to maintain its popularity over time. Interestingly, the number of Rust players on Steam reached all-time highs in January 2025, a significant milestone given that it was initially launched in early access in 2013 (with the final version released in 2018). This sustained success can be attributed to Rust’s frequent and regular updates. Even when updates were relatively small, players found something exciting to anticipate, while newcomers to the game benefited from a steadily expanding library of content as the game evolved.

Regrettably, progress isn’t always a good thing for everyone. This is demonstrated by a message from Double Eleven developer Perdo Silva, informing gamers that Rust: Console Edition, available on Xbox One and PS4, will be removed from the market on May 29, 2025. The removal is due to Double Eleven’s ongoing efforts to create a significant upgrade for Rust on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, scheduled for release in summer 2025. However, t Console Edition will receive a free upgrade to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions when they become available.

Rust: Console Edition Will Be Delisted From PS4 and Xbox One on May 29, 2025

Silva’s post provided more information about the phasing out of the older console versions of Rust: Console Editions, specifically the PS4 and Xbox One versions. As of May 29, 2025, these games will no longer be available for purchase on the PlayStation Network (PSN) and Xbox storefronts. Those who currently own the game can continue playing as usual until a final wipe event in October 2025. Silva hinted that Double Eleven has something unique planned for this final wipe, referring to it as “something special.” Moreover, players will have until the end of October 2025 to take advantage of free updates for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions, officially moving over to the improved version of what many consider one of the top co-op survival games in the genre.

Console Edition, who had no intention of purchasing a PS5 or Xbox Series console, felt left out and cold. On the other hand, many others were pleased that the older versions would no longer hinder the game’s progress on consoles and were eager for the new versions to maintain the popularity of Rust in the future.
