AI News: Nigerian Government Debuts AI Tool with Multilingual Capabilities

The Nigerian government, headed by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, unveiled a versatile, multilingual large language model (LLM). This revelation was made by the Communications Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, at the conclusion of a four-day Artificial Intelligence (AI) workshop in Abuja.

Collaborative Efforts Enhance Nigeria AI Development

A collaboration between Nigerian AI company Awarritech, international tech firm DataDotOrg, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Center for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) spearheaded the creation of the AI model.

Here’s what to expect in the new and improved @NCAIRNigeria.

Our objective is to enhance NCAIR’s capability to carry out Artificial Intelligence studies, foster local scientists and businesses in this field, and improve the usage of AI by the government. To reach this aim, we propose the following measures: (then list the measures)

Dr. Tijani highlighted that the model was developed using five under-resourced languages and advanced English. This approach aims to improve the inclusion of under-represented languages in artificial intelligence data sets. Additionally, over 7,000 members from Nigeria’s 3MTT program contributed, enhancing AI advancement and application within the country.

At the same moment, a new AI model was unveiled in Nigeria as the country’s National AI Strategy draft was put forth. This strategy had been meticulously crafted through extensive consultations with over 120 AI experts. By introducing this technology at this juncture, Nigeria signaled its readiness to harness AI’s potential for economic growth and effective governance.

Funding and International Support

Approximately US$3.5 million is the starting point for this project, with funding coming from both international and local backers. $1.5 million of this amount represents direct contributions, while 21st Century Technologies has invested an additional $2 million. Notable contributors include the UNDP, UNESCO, Meta, Google, and Microsoft. This financial support will be instrumental in launching initial projects and advancing AI technology in Nigeria.

Additionally, the US is eager to collaborate with Nigeria on exploring potential collaborations in the digital economy and AI advancements. Such partnership is expected to boost economic development and ensure secure, transparent implementation of AI technology.

Capacity Building and Infrastructure Enhancement

NCAIR, a key element of this project, has undergone major upgrades to promote artificial intelligence (AI) innovation. Now, it boasts over 2,500 virtual CPUs linked to 1 petabyte of storage at GBB, significantly enhancing its computational capabilities. These enhancements enable various applications, including AI exploration in the public sector and businesses, as well as interconnections between Nigerian AI hubs and pods, among other uses.

NCAIR will now have the ability to back national-level initiatives and academic research in AI with renewed commitment towards transparent reporting and publication. This not only strengthens our local AI expertise but also serves as a foundation for future growth and application of AI in key economic sectors.
