Canceled MMORPG Blue Protocol Is Getting A Revival

Blue Protocol will be getting a worldwide release after all.

Developer BOKURA, having acquired the rights from Bandai Namco for the previously unsuccessful MMORPG, and publisher A PLUS JAPAN have disclosed Blue Protocol: Star Resonance, a reincarnation of the initial game which was exclusively launched in Japan.

It was shut down earlier this year and never made it to its scheduled worldwide release.

Global release for Blue Protocol: Star Resonance is scheduled for later this year, making it accessible on both PC and mobile devices (iOS and Android). What’s more, players can enjoy seamless multiplayer experience across platforms, as well as continue their progression regardless of the device they choose to use.

Unlike the original Blue Protocol, there are currently no plans for a console release.

Trying To Succeed Where The Original Failed

Initially conceived by Bandai Namco, the Blue Protocol game was planned for a global launch around 2023, with Amazon Games handling its publication.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been eagerly awaiting this game since 2015, but unfortunately, its development process was far from smooth sailing. The initial plans had it launching in Japan by 2018, but due to numerous setbacks and delays, it didn’t finally make it to Japanese shelves until 2023. This postponement has also pushed the global release back to an uncertain date in 2024.

By August 2024, it became official that the game would cease operation in January 2025, implying that its global version would fall short of completing its journey.

As a dedicated enthusiast, I’m brimming with optimism as BOKURA expresses their conviction in the success of their upcoming open-world MMORPG, a sequel to an earlier attempt. However, I can’t help but notice that the anime-inspired, free-to-play open-world genre has become more competitive than ever. Previously, Genshin Impact held the throne almost exclusively, but now, fresh contenders like Wuthering Waves are making their mark, particularly on mobile platforms. The competition is fierce, and I can’t wait to see how this newcomer fares!

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice the distinct contrast between Blue Protocol: Star Resonance and its predecessor. Like its forerunner, it stands tall as a comprehensive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). However, it offers an enhanced level of personalization for players, allowing us to choose from a variety of playable classes instead of relying on the random pull of gacha characters. Moreover, I eagerly anticipate a wider range of engaging in-game activities that seem to deviate from the typical free-to-play grind, offering a more enriching and multidimensional experience.

Currently, there’s no confirmed launch date for Blue Protocol: Star Resonance yet. However, we can only cross our fingers that its development process runs more efficiently than the initial one, and it manages to stay active for over a year and a half.
