This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- Luffy’s Devil Fruit awakening turns him into Nika, unlocking Gear 5 to defeat Kaido.
- Gear 5 is the most powerful form with infinite potential limited only by Luffy’s imagination.
- Hancock’s Mero Mero no Mi could rival Nika’s awakening, making her abilities lethal and overpowered.
Luffy’s Gear Five transformation has rapidly gained iconic status across the entire anime world. This remarkable metamorphosis was triggered following Luffy’s Devil Fruit awakening during the Wano arc of One Piece. Few other Devil Fruits can match its power, but another awakening might eventually approach or even surpass Gear Five in the Final Saga.
Luffy’s Devil Fruit Awakening Turns Him Into Nika
Gear 5 is a Powerful Form

In most parts of the “One Piece” series, viewers were unaware about the mystery surrounding Luffy’s Devil Fruit. It was previously known as the Gomu Gomu no Mi, or the rubber fruit, but now we know it’s truly called the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.
The blossoming of the Nika Fruit triggered Luffy’s transformation into an even more potent state – Gear 5 – that ultimately brought about Kaido’s defeat.
Much like the famed Elbaf sun deity, Nikaba, who was known for his flexible form in the folklore, he also engaged in combat using a pliable and extendable physique.
Among all Devil Fruit awakenings shown in the series, Gear 5 appears to be one of the strongest, largely due to its boundless possibilities. The limitations for Luffy are essentially confined by his own creativity.
Yet, another Devil Fruit that enthusiasts recognize has the potential to match the power of the Nika Devil Fruit when activated is also well-known.
The Mero Mero no Mi Is An Odd Devil Fruit
Hancock’s Awakening Could Put Her On Par With Gear 5

The Mero Mero no Mi, wielded by Pirate Empress Boa Hancock, is a Devil Fruit capable of awakening with powers similar to the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. With the recent revelation that the Gomu Gomu no Mi was not as initially claimed, there’s been much discussion about other Devil Fruits possibly possessing hidden names and abilities.
Some speculate that Hancock’s Devil Fruit might be the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Medusa or Gorgon, but this theory is unlikely due to the fact that Green Blood, which works exclusively with Paramecia abilities, was used to replicate her powers. However, it’s possible that Boa Hancock’s Devil Fruit has a potentially lethal awakening. At present, its power is already formidable enough to overpower 99% of the characters in the series. Even Blackbeard, who was wary of losing to it, had to approach her stealthily to defeat her.
Regardless of my actions, there’s a sense that I’ll never be held accountable. People seem to explain this by saying it’s due to my striking beauty.” (In the context of the character Boa Hancock from One Piece)
It seems clear that Blackbeard highly values this Devil Fruit, as he pursues only the most powerful ones – a testament to its immense power. Given his knowledge about the strongest fruits, it’s likely he understands the significance of Hancock’s fruit awakening and what it entails.
Regarding the potential impacts of Hancock’s awakening, a straightforward understanding with Paramecia is that it influences everything within its reach except for the user, which could lead to catastrophic outcomes. In essence, Hancock has the power to manipulate her surroundings against her adversaries. If an enemy expresses any form of desire towards something in Hancock’s proximity, they are essentially defeated. For example, Luffy’s craving for food within Hancock’s vicinity could turn him into stone, and that’s far too overpowering. Moreover, if abstract concepts like freedom can be affected by this power, there seems to be no way to counter such an invincible ability.
