Reuters additionally reports that CEO Shou Zi Chew stated in a recently uploaded video following Biden’s signing of the bill, which grants ByteDance 270 days to sell their American assets or face a ban, “Fear not—we aren’t departing.” He continued, “The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we anticipate triumphing once more.”

US Bans TikTok Over Privacy Concerns

TikTok’s CEO spoke up following the approval of a bill by President Biden that mandates ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to relinquish its control over the app within a year. This legislation is part of a larger package offering aid to Israel and Ukraine. If TikTok disregards these regulations, it could be banned in the US. The House endorsed this bill over the weekend with an impressive majority, and the Senate sealed the deal on Monday with a vote of 79-18.

An additional clause in the law grants ByteDance a nine-month period to locate a purchaser for TikTok in the US. Following the completion of the deal, an extra 90 days are permitted. Failure to do so will result in the app being banned from Google Play and the App Store for US users. This measure stems from Huawei’s anxieties over data security and national security, given its allegiance to China.
