Summary
- Final Fantasy’s Blitzball minigame is coming to Magic: The Gathering as an Enchantment card titled Sidequest: Play Blitzball.
- In Magic: The Gathering, dealing six or more damage transforms the Blitzball card into the powerful World Champion, Celestial Weapon.
- The addition of Blitzball to Magic: The Gathering offers a unique reference to Final Fantasy X and may be useful for players.
It appears that one of the least favored mini-games in the annals of the Final Fantasy series might be making its way to Magic: The Gathering as part of their upcoming collaboration. Fortunately, there’s a more attractive incentive for completing it within the board game version.
The popular Final Fantasy series often integrates mini-games into its long narratives. For instance, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth stands out among recent releases due to an abundance of optional activities it offers, allowing Sephiroth to pursue his wicked scheme unhindered.
On the MagicTCG Reddit, a fresh post about spoilers unveiled a novel card originating from the Final Fantasy series. The card is named “Sidequest: Engage in Blitzball” and it’s an Enchantment-style card inspired by the sports minigame from Final Fantasy X.
Blitzball Is A Magic: The Gathering Card

In Final Fantasy X, Blitzball was a watery soccer-like game where competitors could employ unique RPG powers to outsmart opponents. However, it was quite leisurely paced and rather dull, with the main attraction being an unintentional loophole that allowed players to triumph by concealing themselves within their own goal.
Thankfully, the Magic: The Gathering adaptation of Blitzball isn’t nearly as grueling since all you need to do is inflict six or more damage in combat to another player, causing their cards, Celestial Weapon Legendary Artifact – the World Champion, to appear on the battlefield. This artifact is quite potent.
It’s significant that Sidequest: Blitzball becomes the World Champion, as this alludes to Final Fantasy X. In this game, the character must place third or higher in a Blitzball tournament, or win five matches, to acquire Wakka’s special weapon.
Including Blitzball within Magic: The Gathering is yet another fantastic homage that the Final Fantasy collection offers. Although it could have been irritating during Tidus’ journey, it may prove beneficial for some Magic: The Gathering enthusiasts globally.
