As a die-hard fan, I must say that the innovative additions to weapons, adversaries, and gameplay experiences in Doom: The Dark Ages truly set it apart from its predecessors. This is largely due to the game’s captivating and unprecedented setting, which delves deep into the culture and hardships of Argent D’Nur, offering a perspective that the Doom franchise hasn’t really showcased before.
Remarkably, even though it’s a prequel to 2016’s Doom, The Dark Ages manages to keep things exciting and original. The core combat and exploration are distinct yet fit seamlessly within the franchise’s timeline without causing confusion or raising too many questions about the overall narrative.
In “Doom: The Dark Ages,” many of its distinctive experiences are credible due to its exclusive setting, which is Argent D’Nur during the game’s timeframe. This unique environment justifies why certain adversaries and weapon designs may not be found in future-based titles like “Doom Eternal.” Although Argent D’Nur has been significant in the soft reboot of the “Doom” universe, “The Dark Ages” beautifully expands the setting, making it comparable to some of the most memorable settings that “Doom” has visited throughout its history.
Spoilers for Doom: The Dark Ages below.
Argent D’Nur Plays a Huge Role in Doom’s Wider Narrative
The Dark Ages.” During this storyline, the planet’s inhabitants, called Argenta, are engaged in a battle against invading forces from Hell. After being transported to Argent D’Nur following the events of “Doom 64,” the Slayer becomes a fierce and strong ally for the people of the planet, joining their Night Sentinel warrior class in their fight against evil.
The Argentans are a race resembling humans who emerged after a mysterious cosmic artifact, called the World Spear, collided with their planet. This catastrophic event released beings of divine power, known as Wraiths, from the planet’s core. Over time, these Wraiths cared for and empowered the Argentans, bestowing upon them advanced technological abilities. As a result, an expansive society developed on Argent D’Nur, with a monarchy and a class of warriors at its heart.
For many years, the culture and religious beliefs of Argent D’Nur revolved around ethereal beings known as Wraiths. However, this changed when an extraordinary alien race called the Maykrs established contact with the planet and its inhabitants. The Maykrs imparted knowledge and power to the locals, the Argenta, who subsequently developed a much more powerful civilization under their guidance. Over time, descendants of lesser Argenta humans populated planets like Earth as a result.
The Fall of Argent D’Nur is One of the Most Important Events in the Doom Franchise
The armies from Hell deliberately attacked the realm of Argent D’Nur, aiming to capture and pollute the good spirits residing there. Over time, a portion of Argent D’Nur was swallowed by Hell, creating a huge power source called The Well for demons. This victory for Hell was significantly facilitated by some Night Sentinel groups and even the Maykrs themselves, who collaborated with Hell to harness Argent Energy, an incredibly potent fuel. However, this alliance ultimately led to the Maykrs becoming demon-like creatures due to the corrupting influence of the energy.
Among the chief traitors within the Night Sentinels, Valen deceived Argenta under false promises of rescuing his deceased son from torment by demons. Regrettably, instead of freeing him, his son’s spirit was metamorphosed into the Emblem of Sin.
In the game “Doom: The Dark Ages,” we get an intriguing peek into the culture and lifestyle of the Argenta before the catastrophic events that befell their planet. The Argenta revered the watchful Maykrs, which is a tragic foreshadowing of the betrayal and downfall of their world. Argent D’Nur, a significant and richly detailed location in the Doom universe, serves as a compelling backdrop for the main setting of “The Dark Ages.
