Smash Bros. Melee Finalist Loses Due to Unexpected Glitch and Shocking Outcome

Summary

  • Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament loss due to unexpected glitch.
  • Hardcore players still dedicated to Smash Bros. Melee after nearly 25 years.
  • Glitch during finals match accidentally hands victory to competitor.

The final round of a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament ended in unfortunate circumstances when an unforeseen glitch decided the winner. Sadly, this technical issue cost the player $2,000, regardless of how the Super Smash Bros. Melee match could have gone had the glitch not occurred.

Originally released about a quarter of a century ago, Super Smash Bros. Melee has remained popular among dedicated gamers. Despite the arrival of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Nintendo Switch, many continue to excel at and showcase their skills in Melee, either streaming their gameplay or competing in major tournaments.

The “Super Smash Bros. Melee Full House 2025” tournament took place during the weekend of May 16th, culminating in a grand finale between Kurtis “Moky” Pratt and Cody Schwab vying for a $2,000 prize. Regrettably, Moky unintentionally forfeited the winnings due to a glitch that knocked him off the level. In their final match, both players selected Fox McCloud as their character and chose Pokemon Stadium as their battlefield. A video of the gameplay shows them both executing wavedashes as Fox characters, with Moky primarily positioned among the tree branches, while Schwab stayed on the opposite side.

Fox Falls in Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament

In the video, renowned Smash Bros player Hungrybox is heard providing commentary on the match, and he speculated about the danger of falling off the stage at that specific location. A short while later, Moky indeed fell through the tree and then the stage, with no chance to regain control, thus giving the win to Schwab. Later, Hungrybox posted a video of the incident, labeling it as “the most significant commentator’s jinx in history.

In the global Melee player rankings, Cody Schwab holds the second position and Moky is in fourth, as determined by SSBMRank annually. It’s worth noting that this glitch in Smash Bros. Melee is not common, yet it seems Moky may have underestimated the possibility of it occurring, even though the commentary suggested otherwise. Although the match ended prematurely due to the glitch, both players appeared to be in high spirits, sharing a laugh about the situation. Regardless, given their high rankings, fans are likely to witness these skilled competitors facing off against each other again in the future.
