Summary
- Nintendo Switch 2 gameplay clips are limited to 30 seconds like the original and are stored in the Album.
- The Switch 2 capture system could have other improvements, like higher resolution recording.
It appears that gameplay clips recorded on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 model will be limited to a maximum duration of 30 seconds, similar to the original Switch. This new information comes from the company ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch on June 5.
The latest updates from Nintendo about its forthcoming console have sparked a range of reactions. While the lineup of games slated for launch has been generally praised, certain unveilings like the expensive pricing of some Nintendo-developed games have drawn a lot of negative feedback. Regarding the Switch 2’s interface, both the home screen and Album app share many similarities with their counterparts on the original console.
As a gaming enthusiast, I was excited to learn about the latest update on the Nintendo Today smartphone app. However, it seems that if I don’t have a capture card, my gameplay footage will only be snippets of 30 seconds at a time. Just like with the Switch 1, taking screenshots is as simple as pressing the Capture Button, and saving a short video clip is achieved by holding down the Capture Button for a moment or two, which saves the previous 30 seconds. All my captures are stored in the Album app on the console.
Nintendo Switch 2 Only Allows for 30-Second Recordings
Even though the duration of videos remains unchanged, it’s still uncertain if any other enhancements have been made to the recording system in the new Switch 2. Given that the resolution of the Switch 2 is higher than its predecessor (Switch 1), it’s possible that video clips will now be saved in a higher resolution too. Unfortunately, many games on the original Switch, including popular ones like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, don’t allow for video recording at all. Improving the capture feature to make it standard across all titles could help the Switch 2 seem more advanced compared to its predecessor.
A potential improvement for our system could lie within the Album app itself on the Switch 1 device. Currently, all user-generated screenshots and screen recordings are stored in a single shared folder. Although Nintendo provides basic sorting methods, they could be significantly improved. For instance, one of the most demanded features by fans in the early days of the Switch was the ability to organize games into folders, which Nintendo eventually implemented in their 2022 update. Applying a similar approach to captures would empower users to arrange photos and videos according to their preferences, potentially reducing some of the frustration caused by the 30-second restriction.
