Summary
- Season 3 of HBO’s The Last of Us likely longer than Season 2 but won’t be enough.
- Showrunners considering Season 4 to avoid plot inconsistencies.
- Planning ahead to expand the show’s narrative while avoiding unsatisfactory endings.
In simple terms, without giving away any surprises, the second-to-last episode of The Last of Us Season 2 on HBO has been broadcasted, and for people who have played the video game, it’s evident that the narrative still has a lot more to unfold.
Although many people might expect a third season of the show, it seems like the narrative of The Last of Us Part 2 wouldn’t be fully concluded even with such a sequel.
HBO’s The Last of Us Season 3 Will Most Likely Be Longer Than Season 2 But It Won’t Be Enough

According to showrunner Craig Mazin, who spoke with Collider, it’s quite likely that Season 3 of The Last of Us will have more episodes than Season 2, which only had seven.
When it was suggested to Mazin that either a Season 4 might be necessary to tie up loose ends or that Season 3 could extend beyond seven to eight episodes, Mazin responded succinctly by expressing his belief that “there’s a good possibility Season 3 will be longer than Season 2.”
In regard to future instalments of our series, Mazin emphasizes that they are proactive. They’ve already mapped out plans for Seasons 3 and 4, aiming to maximize their impact and avoid regretting minor details like a specific line, location, or clothing choice that might have enhanced the overall coolness. In essence, they strive to meticulously plan their narrative choices from the start. For our first season, the challenge was figuring out how to tell this expansive story effectively within time and budget constraints. With this current season, the question was, “How can we utilize such extensive source material across multiple seasons?
It may not be as unexpected as others assume that the television series surpassed three seasons, considering it typically consists of just 7 to 8 episodes per season, significantly fewer than many other shows that extend their seasons up to 20 episodes.
Although some viewers may consider another season or four for The Last of Us to be excessive, the showrunners are planning to extend the series beyond the games’ storylines. As seen with Game of Thrones, going past the original source material can lead to plot developments that leave fans disappointed and unsatisfied, as was the case when the hit HBO show strayed from its book series foundation without proper caution.
I’m crossing my fingers that The Last of Us doesn’t conclude in the same manner. The final episode of Season 2 is due on HBO, scheduled for May 25th, and it appears as though it might leave us hanging off a cliff.
