Intriguingly captivating is the universe portrayed in “My Hero Academia”, where superpowers abound. However, it’s also a perilous environment to inhabit, given the relentless clashes between heroes and villains, each wielding their extraordinary quirks. These unyielding confrontations often result in characters from either side suffering injuries as severe as losing limbs during battles.
Numerous significant characters in this series have regrettably lost either an arm or a leg during a critical battle. Although the majority of these individuals managed to fit advanced prosthetics in place, this loss remained profoundly impactful on their lives, serving as a constant reminder of just how perilous their profession can be.
8. Ectoplasm
Lost His Two Legs To An Unnamed Villain
- Quirk: Clones
- First Appearance: Chapter 20 (Manga) Episode 4 (Anime)
Ectoplasm, without a doubt, is one of the lesser-known yet captivating characters in the series. Though he doesn’t appear often, his striking design and versatile ability to create clones known as Clones have left fans spellbound. What many might not know is that he had already lost both legs before the main storyline unfolded.
In Volume 7 of the manga, as explained by author Kohei Horikoshi, Ectoplasm lost his legs in an old battle with an unidentified villain. Now, he uses lightweight prosthetics that not only enable him to walk but also engage in combat with powerful kicks. Remarkably, this injury didn’t prevent him from carrying on with his work as a Pro Hero and as a math teacher at U.A. High School.
7. Atsuhiro Sako (Mr. Compress)
Lost His Left Arm To Overhaul
- Quirk: Compress
- First Appearance: Chapter 80 (Manga) Episode 44 (Anime)
I personally witnessed the shocking first encounter between the League of Villains and the Shie Hassaikai, where it was unfortunate for Tomura Shigaraki’s team as they suffered two devastating casualties. Not only did Kai Chisaki (Overhaul) ruthlessly take the life of Magne with his destructive quirk, but he also annihilated Mr. Compress’ left arm using his powers.
In response to his adversary’s actions, this villain with a magician theme became furious instinctively. This was primarily due to the fact that he relied on his arms and hands to operate his remarkable Compress ability. Luckily for Mr. Compress, he eventually received a replacement arm from Giran. With this artificial limb, he teamed up with the League of Villains to exact revenge on Overhaul at the conclusion of the same storyline. Interestingly, he later improved his prosthetic hand so that it could launch his marbles from its digits.
6. Kai Chisaki (Overhaul)
Lost His Two Arms To Mr. Compress And Tomura Shigaraki
- Quirk: Overhaul
- First Appearance: Chapter 115 (Manga) Episode 62 (Anime)
In the popular series “My Hero Academia”, Eiichiro Oda, the head of the Shie Hassaikai, is widely disliked due to his actions against a young girl named Eri. He abducted her, inflicting pain for the purpose of exploiting her unique power called Rewind. However, this despicable antagonist finally received a fitting punishment when the League of Villains struck during his transport to a hospital, immediately following Izuku Midoriya’s victory over him.
The evil League of Villains retaliated against an incapacitated Overhaul, punishing him for maiming Mr. Compress and coldly murdering Magne: Mr. Compress removed his left arm using his ability, while Tomura Shigaraki disintegrated his right arm with Decay. In horror, Kai Chisaki could only watch as Shigaraki ridiculed him, for he relied on his hands to activate his power, ensuring he would never be able to use it again. Even after Lady Nagant helped Overhaul escape from Tartarus, he was still seen without his two arms, suggesting that he did not receive prosthetics to replace them, perhaps due to regret for his past actions.
5. Rikiya Yotsubashi (Re-Destro)
Lost His Two Legs To Tomura Shigaraki
- Quirk: Stress
- First Appearance: Chapter 218 (Manga) Episode 108 (Anime)
In a manner similar to Overhaul, Re-Destro is a strong antagonist who erred in confronting Tomura Shigaraki. During the Meta Liberation Army Arc, he and his group attempted to compel the League of Villains to activate their powers, culminating in an epic battle between the leaders of both factions.
In a moment of reflection on his past, Tomura Shigaraki activated his Decay quirk, gaining the power to destroy anything nearby without physically touching it. In the ensuing destruction, Re-Destro found himself in danger as his armor was obliterated, but he swiftly utilized fragments of his destroyed armor to defend against further decay. After this incident, Shigaraki moved around in a hovering chair and wore artificial legs due to injuries sustained. However, during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc, Fumikage Tokoyami’s Dark Shadow proved too powerful, causing Shigaraki’s prosthetic limbs to shatter, placing him at a significant disadvantage in combat.
4. Rumi Usagiyama (Mirko)
Lost Her Left Arm And Right Leg To The High-End Nomus
- Quirk: Rabbit
- First Appearance: Chapter 184 (Manga) Episode 87 (Anime)
Title Character: Mirko stands out as one of the most beloved Pro Heroes in ‘My Hero Academia’, appreciated not just within the storyline but also among real-world fans. Her courageous deeds during the Paranormal Liberation War significantly boosted her popularity. Despite possessing a quirk that only amplifies her physical power and agility, she bravely invaded Kyudai Garaki’s laboratory and engaged in solo combat against no less than five formidable High-End Nomus.
Despite enduring tremendous setbacks, Mirko valiantly persisted through her ordeal: A robot took away her left arm and Ribby inflicted a wound on her right leg. Yet, Mirko’s spirit remained undeterred, continuing to battle even with her losses. She was instrumental in the struggle against the Paranormal Liberation Front. Amazingly, she overcame her injuries and received advanced prosthetics that enabled her to carry on as a Pro Hero during the Final War Arc and beyond. It’s no wonder that she maintained her prestigious position among Japan’s Top 10 Pro Heroes for eight years following the story’s conclusion.
3. Shota Aizawa (Eraser Head)
Lost His Right Leg To Tomura Shigaraki
- Quirk: Erasure
- First Appearance: Chapter 5 (Manga) Episode 5 (Anime)
In their battles against Tomura Shigaraki, many characters have found themselves missing limbs or two. Given that Decay is a destructive quirk capable of disintegrating things in mere seconds, it’s logical. However, Shota Aizawa, also known as Eraser Head, stands out as an exception. While he did lose his right leg at the hands of the notorious villain, this event was unrelated to his quirk.
In the course of the Paranormal Liberation War, Shigaraki fired a Quirk-Destroying bullet (previously taken from Overhaul) at Eraser Head. This was because Erasure quirk had been troublesome for him and his schemes. However, instead of letting it disable him completely, Eraser Head reacted shrewdly and amputated his own right leg with a knife to prevent the drug’s spread throughout his body. In this swift and intelligent move, he successfully preserved his extraordinary quirk while sacrificing only one limb, which was later replaced with a prosthetic.
2. Enji Todoroki (Endeavor)
Lost His Right Arm To All For One
- Quirk: Hellflame
- First Appearance: Chapter 28 (Manga) Episode 3 (Anime)
The most chilling moment was when injured warriors were portrayed, as exemplified by Endeavor who continued to fight against All For One even after losing his right arm during their fierce battle in the Final War Arc. This was due to the fact that All For One utilized one of his quirks to obliterate Endeavor’s right arm.
During a brief pause in the fight, the Flame Hero experienced a setback; however, following a short period of introspection with his younger self, he regained his courage and reentered the battlefield. One of the most thrilling and fulfilling scenes in the entire series unfolded as Endeavor formed a fist from fire itself and launched an incredible attack called Vanishing Jet Burn against All For One. In the aftermath of the Final War Arc, Enji Todoroki, having sustained severe injuries and burns throughout the battles, was forced to use a wheelchair and it remained unclear if he made a conscious decision not to receive a prosthetic right arm or if this was due to other reasons.
1. Izuku Midoriya (Deku)
Lost His Two Arms To Tomura Shigaraki
- Quirk: One For All
- First Appearance: Chapter 1 (Manga) Episode 1 (Anime)
In the series, it’s Izuku Midoriya, our protagonist, who encountered a unique predicament similar to Tomura Shigaraki’s destructive power. During their epic final showdown, Deku deliberately transferred One For All to Shigaraki, enabling them to converse privately within the vestige world. This selfless act led to the loss of his quirk and, moreover, both his arms, which were disintegrated in the vestige world as well as the real world due to Decay.
Yet, as Deku’s comrades arrived moments afterward to assist him in wrapping up the skirmish, Aizawa handed him Eri’s shattered horn, which stored a significant amount of energy from her Rewind ability. With this, our hero managed to regenerate his two arms at the crucial point before the climactic battle, making him the sole character in the entirety of ‘My Hero Academia’ to regrow lost limbs without relying on any prosthetics.
