Spoilers For Season 2 Of The Last of Us Are Below
In Season 2 of HBO’s show “The Last of Us,” we gained a deeper understanding of the characters. The story explored the emotional and mental terrains of its characters, revealing their intricate complexities that shape their connections and decisions. It didn’t sugarcoat themes like loss, regret, and the sacrifices required for survival, instead offering a stark and personal portrayal of life after an apocalypse. The second-to-last episode of this season provided a close-up view of Joel and Ellie’s bond, explaining their challenges. However, killing Nora represented a closure for her, as she understood Joel’s actions on her behalf. Now, she found herself in a position to make the same sacrifice for Dina’s unborn child.
Despite having moved on from her immediate concerns, Ellie hasn’t forgotten her long-term goal: locating Abby and her companions. The final episode of “The Last of Us” Season 2 brings us closer to her search. Fuelled by revenge and weighed down by all she’s lost, Ellie’s voyage becomes increasingly somber and solitary. With each advance, it seems she’s distancing herself further from the person she used to be. However, what transpired during the most pivotal phase of her journey? Let’s delve into how events unfolded in the finale of “The Last of Us” Season 2.
Ellie Tells Dina The Truth About What Joel Did In Salt Lake City
The closing scene of The Last of Us season 2 opens with Jesse and Dina arriving at a theater. Dina is in agony, and Jesse is attempting to soothe her. He’s aware that he needs to address her injury promptly, as the situation could worsen otherwise. In an attempt to alleviate her discomfort, Jesse suggests removing the arrow, causing Dina to feel anxious, and she expresses her fear of death. Jesse then applies alcohol to the wound, intensifying her pain. To help her endure the agony, he offers her a drink, but she declines and firmly states that she can’t consume alcohol at this time. Eventually, Jesse extracts the arrow from her leg and dresses the injury. A short while later, Ellie enters the theater and inquires about Dina’s status. Jesse asks Dina what transpired, to which she does not respond. Ellie disregards his question and heads towards the dressing room where she finds Dina recuperating.
After seeing Ellie again following their separation, Dina discerns that her back is severely wounded, prompting her to suspect something has occurred. Inquiring about the situation, Ellie disclosed that she had encountered Nora. She added that when asked about Abby’s location, Nora only uttered two cryptic words: “whales” and “wheels.” Ellie expressed doubt as to whether Nora knew about Abby’s whereabouts, suggesting the words could have been random. Ellie admitted to injuring Nora but not killing her because she was already infected and left her for dead. Throughout their conversation, Ellie revealed details about Salt Lake City and the events that transpired there, including how Joel massacred everyone after discovering a potential cure might harm Ellie. It was Joel’s actions that led Abby and her group to seek revenge against him.
As a result, Ellie revealed that she was aware of Joel’s actions, leaving Dina astonished. All she responded with was her desire to return home.
Ellie And Jesse Leave To Meet Tommy, While The WLF Showcases Its Brutality

The narrative progresses to Day Three in Seattle. Ellie and Jesse appear to be preparing their belongings, ready to meet Tommy. Dina exits the dressing room and approaches Ellie, handing her a protective charm for safety. Moved by this gesture, Jesse suggests he could handle things on his own if Ellie chooses to stay behind. However, Dina firmly declines. Thus, their objective is to reach the designated spot, connect with Tommy, and arrive at the theater before sunset. Throughout their travels, Ellie queries about the discovery of the theater, and Jesse inquires about her recent experiences. Eventually, he reveals how they traced the theater by taking the most likely route. Additionally, they found where they had left their traveling companion, Shimmer, the horse, and stumbled upon a TV station displaying the WLF emblem. Upon exploring the surrounding buildings, he discovered the theater.
It took him two days with several close calls before he finally found the theater. Ellie appreciated his efforts, but Jesse shared that Dina had said “I can’t die” the previous night and decided not to drink. On the other hand, Jesse feels that Dina and Ellie have grown quite close lately, and he suspects she made that comment because she is pregnant. Indeed, Jesse was correct in his assumption. Thus, Jesse informs Ellie that they need to hurry up because he will soon be a father and can’t let his child perish in Seattle. Jesse also holds Ellie responsible for being caught up in this war. As they journey forward, the pair becomes aware that they must move quickly due to an impending storm, which eventually starts to pour down rain. They seek shelter inside a warehouse and wait for the storm to pass. However, the situation worsens when they hear gunfire, and they quickly take cover to protect themselves.
Initially, they believed the WLF soldiers were attacking them, only to discover later that some WLF soldiers were pursuing a young Seraphite. Ellie desired to aid him, yet Jesse prevented her. Eventually, the WLF soldiers apprehended the Seraphite youth, leaving him bare and taking him captive. Ellie felt irritated with Jesse for not intervening on behalf of the child, but he explained that he wouldn’t jeopardize his life for their cause as this was not their conflict.
Abby Is Nowhere To Be Seen, While Ellie Finally Gets What Nora meant By ‘Whales And Wheels’

While the WLF prepares for the storm’s arrival in Seattle and plans to depart from their current location, Sergeant Elise Park informs Isaac that all preparations are in order. Instead of inquiring about their plan, however, Isaac queries if Sergeant Park is aware of Abby’s whereabouts. Park replies that Abby hasn’t been seen since the previous day, and to compound matters, both Owen and Mel have also disappeared. The manner in which Isaac speaks about Abby leads Park to suspect that he may have feelings for her. To refute this suspicion, Isaac points out that if things take a turn for the worse, they themselves would perish. In such a scenario, who will take charge of their organization? According to Isaac, Abby was meant to lead them, but she remains untraceable.
In another part of town, I found myself standing before the very bookstore where Jesse and Ellie were due to meet Tommy. Yet, upon arrival, there was no sign of him. So, we huddled inside for a while, hoping he’d show up. As we perused the shelves together, Jesse confided in me that he had feelings for Dina, but admitted that she meant more to Ellie than she ever did to him. On the flip side, he shared a tale of a woman from Alberta who had joined Jackson’s group, and how they had grown fond of each other. He spoke of his desire to depart with her, but ultimately chose to stay in Jackson because its people and settlement relied on him heavily. However, our heart-to-heart was abruptly halted when we received a warning over the WLF walkie about a sniper targeting us – a chilling reminder that Tommy might be the one pulling the trigger.
Ellie Cheats Death As She Finally Meets Abby’s Two Most Important Partners

They trekked towards a deserted structure, where they could faintly hear gunfire from a distance. Through her binoculars, Ellie spots a Ferris wheel and a building adorned with a giant whale image. This sight reminds Ellie of when she inquired about Abby, and Nora said “whales and wheels.” Ellie informs Jesse that Abby is located inside the Seattle Aquarium, suggesting they head there. But Jesse insists on finding Tommy as he might require assistance. Ellie tells him that if three more people had voted that day, he would have been here in an official capacity. However, Jesse clarifies that he cast a “no” vote during the voting. A disagreement ensues between them, and Ellie urges Jesse to understand their course of action. Yet, Jesse seems uninterested and wishes her luck on her journey before departing.
As night fell and the storm intensified, Ellie managed to reach the shore with the intention of using a speedbot to get to the aquarium. However, upon moving towards it, she noticed several smaller boats heading towards shore, guided by Isaac. After they left, Ellie hopped onto one of these boats and commenced her journey. Unfortunately, a large wave hit her boat, causing her to be swept away from her intended destination into a forest inhabited by the Seraphites. Shortly after, two members of the Seraphites escorted her deeper into the forest for an audience with their leaders. When it appeared Ellie was about to meet her end, the commotion of the Scars from their village distracted them, allowing Ellie to escape and seek refuge in a nearby speedboat. As she navigated towards the aquarium, Ellie could hear deafening explosions emanating from the forest – evidence that WLF soldiers had launched an attack on the Seraphites, but she pressed on, determined to find Abby.
Upon reaching the aquarium, she struggled to locate Abby, but instead, she stumbled upon Mel and Owen. Unfortunately, Ellie ended up killing both of them before Tommy and Jesse arrived on the scene. Later, they followed her path and managed to reach the theater where Dina eagerly awaited Tommy’s arrival.
In simple terms, the Season 2 finale of “The Last of Us” is a potent, emotionally charged rollercoaster ride that highlights the harsh price of survival and vengeance. As Ellie pursues Abby, her journey becomes increasingly bleak, burdened by guilt and sorrow. The episode skillfully combines intense action with poignant, heart-wrenching scenes, particularly when Ellie reveals the truth about Salt Lake City to Dina. Jesse and Ellie’s relationship adds a touch of warmth, but tension escalates as the WLF and Seraphites close in. The finale subtly references Nora’s cryptic hint—”whales and wheels”—leading Ellie to a shocking revelation at the aquarium. Instead of providing simple solutions, it demonstrates how far Ellie is willing to go and what she’s sacrificing. With gripping drama, powerful performances, and a profound emotional impact, this finale sets the tone for an engaging continuation, reminding us that in a shattered world, the most challenging battles are often fought within ourselves.
