In 2001, the game “Onimusha: Warlords” was launched on PlayStation 2, featuring Samanosuke Akechi, a samurai protagonist. Occasionally, players could control Kaede, a female ninja character. This pair proved effective, but Capcom truly excelled in the latest installment by introducing no less than five playable characters.

In the sequel of Onimusha, titled “Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny,” the story revolves around Jubei Yagyu, a samurai who battles demons. As a gamer, I’ve crossed swords with Magoichi Saiga in other gaming realms, like Samurai Warriors. He’s a man of few words, keeping his feelings largely hidden within the narrative. But don’t let that cool demeanor fool you; he’s a master instigator, particularly when it comes to stirring up strife with Ekei in Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. The dynamic between them is always intriguing to watch unfold. What sets Magoichi apart is his rifle, which boasts an endless supply of ammunition. This is quite a contrast to the limited firepower Jubei’s players have access to when they wield their rifles. However, don’t underestimate Magoichi – he’s also equipped with a dagger, and many of his regular combat moves involve both weapons.

It’s logical that in a horror game like Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, players shouldn’t have infinite ammo, or else it would make the game too simple. However, it can be disappointing to control Magoichi because while he has powerful abilities such as heating up his rifle for increased damage and throwing flash bombs to stun enemies, he might not be as entertaining to play compared to other characters.

4. Oyu

A Warrior With A Secret

In the main campaign of this horror game, only one character, Oyu, can be played, regardless of any variations. She’s the lone female protagonist in the game. For combat, she wields a sword and shield, a common configuration seen in many games. Compared to Jubei’s normal sword swings, her attacks are quicker, but her reach with any sword is slightly shorter. The shield doesn’t significantly enhance combat, as all weapons can be used for blocking.

Her weapon emits light to boost its damage, offering a useful advantage. Moreover, she’s adept at throwing knives, a skill reminiscent of a ninja, although it’s not her only ability. Oyu may appear ordinary in terms of character development, but she proves to be an efficient fighter when needed. She plays a significant role in the story, and key insights about her character unfold as you progress through gameplay.

3. Kotaro Fuma

A Quick Diversion

Kotaro belongs to a ninja clan and is another well-known Japanese figure who has featured in games such as Samurai Warriors. The game portrays him as a youngster, which makes him somewhat mischievous and playful. He enjoys having fun and frequently feels restless when not engaged in spying or receiving presents from Jubei to keep himself entertained.

In terms of raw power, Kotaro’s dagger attacks may not stand out among other characters in the game, yet their speed is so rapid that it becomes irrelevant. What sets Kotaro apart is his special ability: he can become invisible and craft a decoy. While enemies focus on the decoy, Kotaro has the opportunity to either evade or launch surprise attacks from behind. Additionally, Kotaro can hurl knives at foes, but the invisibility and decoy technique is truly a sight to behold.

2. Ekei Ankokuji

A Thirsty Monk

In this game, Ekei stands out as the largest character, but he moves at a slightly slower pace compared to others. However, his size offers a unique advantage – his skill with the spear is unparalleled in terms of both speed and strength. On the surface, it may appear that Ekei has a fondness for alcohol and cheap company, but there’s a depth to him that isn’t immediately apparent.

In the game, Ekei is the largest character, moving at a leisurely pace compared to others. Yet, his size grants him an edge – he wields the spear with unrivaled speed and power. Initially, one might think that Ekei enjoys drinking and cheap companionship, but there’s more to him than meets the eye.

In addition to his quick instincts surpassing those of Jubei’s spear attacks, Ekei will swiftly counter enemies with lightning speed. He can hurl charms as his secondary weapon, fitting the monk-like persona of this warrior. His special move immobilizes a cluster of enemies, offering an invaluable tactical edge. This setup works efficiently when players switch between controlling Jubei and Ekei, but mastering Jubei’s control is also enjoyable on its own.

1. Jubei Yagyu

The Power Of The Oni

It’s quite unexpected if the protagonist of this Capcom game were a feeble character, but luckily, Jubei is far from it. In the narrative, he acquires four elemental weapons, two long-range options, and a hidden fifth elemental katana known as Buraitou – a larger sword capable of delivering swift lightning blows to individual enemies. A weapon he unlocks later is Dokoutsui, an Earth-damaging hammer that can strike every enemy on the screen at once.

In essence, the majority of Jubei’s equipment can be enhanced, such as his attire, providing him an edge over his fellow characters. What makes this even better is that if gamers gather five orbs colored purple, they can activate a mode known as Onimusha, which allows Jubei to assume the form of a demon. This fits perfectly with Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, but it’s not a novel feature. To sum up, Jubei is a samurai hero who excels across all gameplay styles and is equipped to handle any demon-slaying task.
