In the sequel to Monster Train, known as Monster Train 2, players will encounter their second playable faction – the Pyreborne. This group is brimming with Dragons and Whelps, who have a penchant for two things: fire and riches. These preferences form the basis of the clan’s core gameplay mechanics. This guide aims to delve deeper into those mechanics, providing players with insights into what they can expect from the Pyreborne clan in Monster Train 2.
This manual provides comprehensive information about the Pyreborne’s champions, troops, spells, and more. Players who grasp the fundamentals covered in the initial segment can manage to finish runs using this faction even within the early to mid levels of Covenant Rankings.
Pyreborne Clan Mechanics in Monster Train 2
One key aspect for Monster Train 2 players to grasp immediately is the fundamental mechanics of the Pyreborne clan, which consist of three crucial elements:
Or
In Monster Train 2, players need to get a firm grip on the Pyreborne clan’s main features right off the bat, and these can be broken down into three essential components:
Pyregel
In simpler terms, “Pyregel” is a status effect that incrementally increases the damage a targeted unit takes by one for each stack accumulated. For instance, if an opponent has amassed ten stacks of Pyregel, they will sustain ten additional points of damage every time they are attacked.
In essence, when playing Pyreborne, aim to accumulate multiple instances of the Pyregel debuff on enemy units. This will significantly amplify the damage they sustain from friendly units and spells. Notably, Pyregel can transform ordinary cards into formidable resources. As you choose your units, cast spells, select Artifacts, and make other strategic decisions, be mindful of opportunities to impose this debuff.
In simpler terms, the term “Multistrike” means that certain units can attack multiple times. This feature works wonderfully when combined with Pyregel. Although Pyreborne doesn’t have any units with this Multistrike ability, players can acquire it through unit upgrades in Monster Train 2 or by choosing allied clans that possess Multistrike units.
Dragon’s Hoard
The Pyreborn have various methods to acquire Dragon Treasures, which can be traded outside of combat for incentives. Players can accumulate their treasures and deposit a large number at once for more substantial rewards, and the exchange rate from eggs to prizes is as follows:
1 Egg = 1 Reward Point (RP)
5 RP = Common Prize
10 RP = Uncommon Prize
20 RP = Rare Prize
40 RP = Epic Prize
100 RP = Legendary Prize
- 1: Gain 10 Gold.
- 2: Gain 25 Gold.
- 3: Gain 25 Gold. A Random Minor Pyreborne Artifact.
- 4: Gain 25 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts.
- 5: Gain 50 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts.
- 6: Gain 50 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Artifact.
- 7: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Artifact.
- 8: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
- 9: Gain 75 Gold. A Random Minor Pyreborne Artifact. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
- 10: Gain 75 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
- 11: Gain 100 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Artifacts.
- 12: Gain 100 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. A Random Major Boss Artifact.
- 13: Gain 150 Gold. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Minor Pyreborne Artifacts. Select one of three Major Boss Artifacts.
To start with, a player can carry up to eight eggs at any given moment. Nevertheless, by acquiring the artifacts known as Expanded Coffers and Hidden Coffers, players can boost their maximum Dragon’s Hoard, thereby unlocking the potential for higher-tier rewards.
As a seasoned moviegoer reviewing this dragon-filled epic, I’d advise hoarding your precious dragon eggs until you’ve amassed the maximum Dragon’s Hoard for optimal returns. However, if you find yourself on the brink of battle and anticipate a treasure trove of eggs, consider cashing in if you’re almost at your Dragon’s Hoard limit to maximize your immediate gains.
From my perspective as an enthusiast, I’d like to emphasize that players can unlock diverse spells and abilities that aid in accumulating ‘eggs’, if you will. However, it’s crucial to remember that using these powers shouldn’t jeopardize your combat situations. That said, when players find themselves with some extra ‘Ember’, they should absolutely make use of these spells, as repeatedly claiming the Dragon’s Hoard rewards is an excellent method for amassing significant power.
One economical method for acquiring eggs is through the use of Gildmongers, an infrequent unit that bestows one Dragon’s Hoard upon its death. Particularly effective is upgrading this unit with the “Endless” ability and placing it in a way that it dies frequently. This strategy can be potent as it often allows for the production of numerous eggs during each combat encounter.
Gold
In various scenarios within Pyreborne, certain spells and combat units gain advantages from accumulating wealth. The mentioned Dragon’s Hoard rewards serve as one method through which the clan amasses coins, and there are numerous Pyreborne units and skills equipped with Greed, a feature that causes the unit to generate wealth when it inflicts damage without opposition.
Instead of casting Pyreborne spells that require Gold whenever you can, it’s best to use them sparingly, preferably in critical situations. It’s generally more advantageous to hold onto your coins for purchases from merchants. However, the Soldier of Fortune spell, a rarity, is an exception because often, you can recover the spent Gold by playing this spell again.
Pyreborne Clan Champions in Monster Train 2
Lord Fenix
Players will initially encounter Lord Fenix as the first Pyreborne Champion, who manifests in three distinct forms:
- Overlord
- Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 20 Attack, 25 Health
- Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire II (Cooldown 3. Explosive. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 30 Attack, 35 Health
- Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire III (Cooldown 3. Explosive. Deal damage equal to 2x this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Slay: +1 Attack permanently. | 40 Attack, 45 Health
- Golden Crown
- Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 1 Dragon’s Hoard. | 15 Attack, 30 Health
- Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 1 Dragon’s Hoard and 15 Gold. | 20 Attack, 45 Health
- Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | Conjure: Gain 2 Dragon’s Hoard and 25 Gold. | 30 Attack, 80 Health
- Pyremaniac
- Level 1: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +1 stacks. | 20 Attack, 30 Health
- Level 2: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +2 stacks. | 30 Attack, 40 Health
- Level 3: Ability: Fenix Fire (Cooldown 3. Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.) | When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +4 stacks. | 40 Attack, 60 Health
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but rave about the Fenix Fire ability! This power is not exclusive to any single version of Lord Fenix, so all players should seize every opportunity to unleash it. You see, while the advantages of regularly using Fenix Fire are particularly striking when you’re controlling Golden Crown Lord Fenix, both Overlord and Pyremaniac also know how to wield this ability with great effect.
In essence, items such as spells, equipment, and artifacts that lessen Cooldown Timers, including the Pyreborne Brainspike spell, Tome of Contracts spell, Attuned Manacles Artifact, and Taskmaster’s Lash Artifact, significantly enhance the power of Lord Fenix. Furthermore, artifacts that provide additional advantages when activating abilities, such as Spiritbreaker’s Charge and Shaleshell, can further improve this champion.
The Pyreborn boast various units with impressive skills that offer utility for reducing Cooldown Timers, going beyond the abilities of Lord Fenix.
In addition to making the most of Fenix Fire, players should primarily concentrate on a strategy centered around Pyregel, utilizing all three versions of this champion. This approach involves applying numerous Pyregel debuffs to enemy units, and it is backed up from the get-go by the copies of the Firestarter spell that Fenix decks typically include.
Although Pyromaniac Lord Fenix might seem to have the strongest alliance with a strategy centered around Pyregels, Overlord and Golden Crown can also prove highly effective in combat. In fact, the bonus rewards from using Golden Crown can drastically alter the course of a campaign, while a strengthened Overlord Lord Fenix can be exceptionally destructive. This is largely because the enhanced Fenix Fire ability that version possesses gains the Explosive keyword, which significantly amplifies its power.
Initially, Master Lord Fenix may seem lackluster in the early stages of play due to the challenge of consistently activating his Slay ability. Yet, when a player advances to Level 2 and equips Explosive to Fenix Fire, they’ll find it simpler to compensate for missed Slay triggers with relative ease.
Lady Gilda

Players can gain access to Lady Gilda once they reach Level 5 within the Pyreborne clan, and she exhibits three distinct forms.
- Gildmother
- Level 1: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gilded Egg. | Attack: 35, Health: 60
- Level 2: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gildeder Egg. | Attack: 60, Health: 90
- Level 3: Trample | Summon: Summon a Gildedest Egg. | Attack: 100, Health: 15
- Bloat Matron
- Level 1: Harvest: Apply Pyregel 2 to enemy units. | Whelp units cost -1 Ember on this floor. | Attack: 10, Health: 45
- Level 2: Harvest: Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units. | Whelp units cost -1 Ember on this floor. | Attack: 15, Health: 70
- Level 3: TBD
- Lady Avarice
- Level 1: Enchant: Grant Avarice 5. | Attack: 30, Health: 30
- Level 2: Enchant: Grant Avarice 5. | +10 Attack per 100 Gold you started the turn with. | Attack: 30, Health: 60
- Level 3: TBD
In contrast to Lord Fenix decks that initiate with Firestarter spells, Lady Gilda’s decks begin with Bloated Whhelp cards. This Whelp character requires one Ember to be played, occupies a single space, possesses the Indigestion trait (which allows it to sacrifice itself and inflict one damage on opponents’ units), boasts four attacks, and has one health point.
I find an intriguing alignment between this entity and the Bloat Matron, as the Bloated Whelp is not only less costly to deploy but also activates the Harvest effect seamlessly with its counterpart. It appears that in combat, Lady Gilda’s most potent manifestation lies here. Interestingly, the Lady Avarice form boasts an immediate availability of a few compact units in tight spaces. The more units sharing the same space as Lady Avarice-Gilda, the more instances of Avarice 5 she can bestow upon them, thereby increasing the Gold at our disposal.
Discussing the subject of space, the colossal dimensions of the Pyreborne champions make single-space units exceptionally precious. Luckily, there exist several robust yet compact Pyreborne units, and players can minimize the size of larger units using upgrades. Furthermore, the Bogwurm’s Growth Pyre Heart expands floors permanently following each fight, offering a fantastic solution to address the clan’s space-related concerns.
In simpler terms, Gildmother Gilda doesn’t seem to have any clear advantages when paired with Bloated Whelps. However, she excels at rapidly accumulating Dragon’s Hoard, making for some exciting gameplay experiences. Additionally, her Trample ability can transform her into a potent offensive character, particularly if she is armed with high-damage equipment. This becomes even more effective when used in conjunction with such gear.
To increase their odds of successfully hatching the egg, it’s suggested that players call upon Gildmother Gilda on the highest level during battle.
Pyreborne Clan Units in Monster Train 2
Common

Name | Type | Cost | Size | Ability | Attack | Health |
Bloated Whelp | Whelp | 1 | 1 | Indigestion (Cooldown: 1 | Sacrifice | Deal 1 damage to enemy units.) | 4 | 1 |
Snotty Whelp | Whelp | 1 | 1 | Gellysneeze (Cooldown: 2 | Deal 1 damage then apply Pyregel 10 to the front enemy unit.) | 4 | 1 |
Previously mentioned, the “Bloated Whelp” shares strong strategic links with certain versions of Lady Gilda. Upon playing this champion, you’ll initially possess multiple instances of this unit. Additionally, it can aid in activating items such as the Attuned Manacles, Sacrificial Kris, Spiritbreaker’s Charge, and Shaleshell.
The Snotty Pup is proficient in activating items that center around Pups and their abilities. What sets it apart is that this creature can use its ability without having to give up itself, thus allowing for multiple triggers from a single unit. Unfortunately, the Snotty Pup cannot activate the Sacrificial Kris, which means the Bloated Pup performs better when paired with that specific Artifact.
Players might ponder over enhancing the Bloated Whelps with an attribute called “Endless”, enabling them to repeatedly deploy and sacrifice these creatures on each turn, thereby triggering multiple effects β not just from Artifacts but also from Bloated Matron Gilda.
Uncommon
Name | Type | Cost | Size | Ability | Attack | Health |
Gildmonger | Dragon | 1 | 2 | Extinguish: Gain 1 Dragon’s Hoard. (Triggers on death.) | 10 | 30 |
Magma Mauler | Dragon | 1 | 2 | Strike: Apply Pyregel 8. (Triggers when attacking.) | 10 | 25 |
Miser | Dragon | 1 | 1 | Avarice 10 (Gain Gold equal to Avarice when dealing unblocked damage.) | 3 | 9 |
Stuck Up Whelp | Whelp | 1 | 1 | Ability: Expensive Taste (Cooldown 3 | Apply Avarice 2 to friendly units.) | 4 | 1 |
Wealthy Whelp | Whelp | 1 | 1 | Ability: Moneymaker (Cooldown 3 | Gain 7 Gold for each Dragon’s Hoard.) | 4 | 1 |
Greed Dragon | Dragon | 2 | 3 | Summon: +10 Attack and +10 Health for each Dragon’s Hoard. | 20 | 35 |
Hot Head | Dragon | 2 | 2 | Ability: Fire Breathing (Cooldown 2 | Deal damage equal to this unit’s attack to enemy units, twice.) | 5 | 20 |
Magma Cultist | Dragon | 2 | 1 | Incant: Apply Pyregel 1 to enemy units. (Triggers when you play a spell on this floor.) | 5 | 10 |
In simpler terms, “Miser,” “Stuck Up Whelp,” and “Wealthy Whelp” are less common, versatile figures that work well for filling small gaps, but may not be overly exciting. Conversely, the “Magma Cultist” is a smaller figure that can significantly contribute to decks focused on Pyregel, especially when these decks include low-cost spells.
Regarding less frequently used tanks, both Gildmonger and Greed Dragon are capable of excelling at the forefront of a battlefield. It’s worth mentioning that a Gildmonger with an Endless upgrade can be exceptionally strong. However, if a player is already rapidly accumulating eggs, Greed Dragon might prove to be a more advantageous choice.
– Lastly, we have the standout card, Magma Mauler, that truly excels in robust decks that augment Pyregel usage. Additionally, there’s the useful Hot Head, ideal for dismantling enemy damage barriers. To fully leverage Magma Mauler, consider enhancing it with skills such as Multistrike and Dualism. Hot Head is a worthwhile choice if your deck lacks economical solutions to eliminate shields (like Flicker).
Rare

Name | Type | Cost | Size | Ability | Attack | Defense |
Goldtooth | Dragon | 2 | 2 | Avarice 5. | +15 Attack per 100 Gold you started the turn with. | 15 | 30 |
Pyreblooded | Dragon | 2 | 1 | Ability: Empower (Cooldown: 3 | Gain Attack equal to Pyregel stacks on all units.) | 5 | 10 |
Zealot | Dragon | 3 | 2 | Sweep (Attacks all enemy units.) | Action: Apply Pyregel 5 to enemy units. (Triggers at the start of this unit’s turn.) | 10 | 20 |
βββββββ
Two exceptional, seldom seen Pyreborne units are Pyreblooded and Zealot. Pyreblooded shines in decks that accumulate a significant amount of Pyregel, dealing substantial damage. On the other hand, Zealot proves beneficial in decks requiring assistance with applying debuffs or facing trouble defeating weak, rear-line units with low health. Goldtooth can dish out a good deal of damage too, but its effectiveness may diminish at higher Covenant Ranks as it becomes harder to accumulate vast quantities of Gold.
Pyreborne Clan Spells in Monster Train 2
Common
Name | Cost | Effect |
Flicker | Deal 1 damage to enemy units.
Lava Flow | Consume. Apply Pyregel 4 to enemy units.
Firestarter | 1 | Deal 1 damage then apply Pyregel 2. |
Pyrecask | 1 | Consume. Apply Pyregel 10. |
Golden Touch | 2 | Deal 5 damage. Slay: Gain 1 Dragon’s Hoard. |
Pyreball | 2 | Explosive. Deal 15 damage. |
Alchemy | 3 | Consume. Gain 2 Dragon’s Hoard. |
It’s no shock that the typical spells of Pyreborne don’t appear overly potent, but they do serve their purpose. For instance, Flicker and Pyreball can be beneficial for bursting damage shields and eliminating weak opponents, especially when enhanced. Lava Flow and Pyrecask are decent methods to apply Pyregel debuffs. Additionally, Golden Touch and Alchemy can aid players in gathering eggs, although it becomes challenging to utilize them as Covenant Rank grows.
Uncommon
Name | Cost | Effect |
Pyreborne Brainspike | X | Consume. Reduce Cooldown by X. Apply 2X Avarice. |
Fanning the Flame | 1 | Explosive. Deal 3 damage to a random enemy unit. Slay: Increase damage by 3 permanently. |
Greed | 1 | Deal 20 damage to all units. Slay: Gain 10 Gold. |
Inequivalent Exchange | 1 | Deal damage equal to 25x your Dragon’s Hoard, then lose 1 Dragon’s hoard. |
Make it Rain | 1 | Deal 5 damage to enemy units. Spend 5 Gold and repeat this card’s effect, up to three more times. |
Pay Off | 2 | Consume. Restore 2 Pyre health for each Dragon’s Hoard. |
Dragon’s Breath | 3 | Apply Pyregel 10 and deal 10 damage to enemy units. |
The unusual spells from Pyreborne that are worth using greatly depend on the composition of a player’s deck. For example, a deck with Lord Fenix or other powerful units might benefit from acquiring Pyreborne Brainspike, while Inequivalent Exchange could be more valuable for a deck that can quickly amass eggs. Alternatively, a player who owns the Taskmaster’s Lash Artifact may wish to acquire Greed, or one who is focusing on Pyregel might opt for Dragon’s Breath instead.
Rare

Name | Cost | Effect |
Soldier of Fortune | Draw a unit. If you have 30 Gold, spend it to apply +30 Attack, Avarice 15, and Armor 15.
Devilish Details | 1 | Consume. Gain 3 Dragon’s Hoard. Your Pyre takes 10 damage. |
Tome of Contracts | 1 | Consume. Reduce a unit’s Cooldown Timer by 1 to a minimum of 1. |
Deathroar | 3 | Transfer all Pyregel on this floor to a unit then deal 5 damage five times. |
Superheated | 3 | Consume. Double the amount of Pyregel on a unit. |
Pyreclasm | 4 | Attuned (Multiply the effects of Magic Power by 5.) Explosive. Deal 150 damage. |
Just like some infrequently used charms, scarce Pyreborne spells provide a variety of outcomes, and their value hinges on a player’s unique deck setup. For example, a player struggling to accumulate numerous Pyregel stacks on a unit may find little advantage from Superheated, whereas a deck lacking ability-centric units might not find Tome of Contracts particularly useful. However, Soldier of Fortune tends to be beneficial for most decks due to the likelihood of recovering its cost in Gold by the end of a battle.
Pyreborne Clan Equipment in Monster Train 2

Each piece of Pyreborne gear proves beneficial under the right setup. For instance, Lava Armor harmonizes well with either the Sparkflint Catalyst or Hellfurnace room. Mind Cage is particularly effective when equipped to Lord Fenix, while the Cursed Dragonstaff can unleash significant damage in decks heavy on spells against enemy units infected by Pyregel.
Pyreborne Clan Rooms in Monster Train 2

The significance of Pyregel has become quite evident, and the Hellfurnace is an effective tool for boosting decks centered around Pyregel. Additionally, the Sacrificial Chamber can be quite potent as well, particularly if the player intends to frequently sacrifice Bloated Whelps on a specific level.
The fact that Pyregel matters a lot is now obvious, and Hellfurnace is useful for enhancing decks with Pyregel focus. The Sacrificial Chamber can also be powerful, especially when the player often sacrifices Bloated Whelps on a specific stage.)
Pyreborne Clan Artifacts in Monster Train 2
The Pyreborne possess not just one but two types of Artifacts: their own Pyreborne clan Artifacts and additional ones retrieved from the Dragon’s Hoard.
Clan
- Attuned Manacles: Summoning a Whelp reduces Cooldown of friendly units by 1.
- Expanded Coffers: Increase Max Dragon’s Hoard by 3.
- Fhyra’s Inferno: Dragons apply Pyregel 5 on Strike.
- Gel Transfusor: When any unit dies, their Pyregel is spread among enemy units.
- Gold Gloves: Friendly units gain Avrice 2.
- Hellheart: Apply 10 Pyregel to Non-Flying Boss enemy units that enter the floor below the Pyre Room.
- Magma Core: Your Pyre applies Pyregel 2 to enemy units on all floors on Revenge.
- Prismatic Dragonscale: At the end of battle, gain 3 Dragon’s Hoard if your Pyre took no damage.
- Sacrificial Kris: Apply Pyregel 5 to enemy units when a Whelp dies.
- Sparkflint Catalyst: When a unit without Pyregel gains Pyregel, it gains +6 stacks.
- Spiritbreaker’s Charge: After using an ability, friendly units gain +5 Attack.
Dragon’s Hoard
- Ember Charge: On your first turn, +2 Ember.
- Fhyra’s Breath: Whelps apply Pyregel 3 on Strike.
- Flaming Talons: When an enemy unit ascends, they gain Pyregel 2.
- Hellfire Bellows: When a unit gains Pyregel, it gains +1 stack.
- Hidden Coffers: Increase max Dragon’s Hoard by 2.
- Medallion of Superiority: Units gain +3 Health and +3 Attack for each upgrade on their card.
- Pyreborne’s Insignia: When you equip a friendly unit, apply Conduit 4.
- Shaleshell: After using an ability, friendly units gain Armor 3.
- Sharpened Teeth: Dragons and Whelps gain +8 Attack.
- Sizzling Firecracker: Spells gain +3 damage for each upgrade on their card.
- Taskmaster’s Lash: When you damage your own units, reduce Cooldown by 1.
Pyreborne Clan Allies in Monster Train 2
The Luna Coven works exceptionally well with the Pyreborne clan because their Conduit ability significantly boosts Magic Power. This enhancement can transform seemingly weak spells into potent sources of high damage and healing. Moreover, it complements Pyreclasm, a rare Pyreborne spell, incredibly well as it amplifies Magic Power by five times.

Furthermore, the Luna Coven boasts compact one-space units that harmoniously complement the massive Pyreborne units. A number of these smaller units act as key providers of Conduit, simplifying the task of reinforcing Pyreborne spells with their potent influence.
Ultimately, joining Luna Coven as an ally grants players instant access to Witchweave, a spell that can either inflict or heal damage at no cost. Moreover, this spell can be enhanced with Conduit, and it synergizes with Pyreborne cards such as the Cursed Dragonstaff Equipment and Magma Cultist unit, offering additional incentives for players to rely on Luna Coven in Monster Train 2.
