Former Xbox-Exclusive Getting Disc Version Alongside PS5 Release

Summary

  • Physical versions of Hellblade 2 will be available on disc format for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S handled by Limited Run Games.
  • A physical version of the original Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will also be available for the Nintendo Switch by Limited Run.
  • Microsoft has passed off the physical version of Hellblade off to Limited Run Games, not handling it directly, suggesting a new multi-platform strategy.

One exclusive game for the Xbox Series X|S that is coming to PlayStation 5 will have a physical edition, but interestingly, this physical version won’t be released until after the PlayStation 5 version has been launched first, and then it will become available on disc format for its home console.

As a devoted gamer, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming release of Ninja Theory’s masterpiece, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Last week, the official confirmation came that it will grace the PS5 screens somewhere this summer!

Hellblade Franchise Headed To PlayStation And Even Nintendo Platforms

According to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), it’s been confirmed that the physical editions of Hellblade 2 will be distributed by Limited Run Games, not Microsoft. This means you’ll be able to purchase a disc version of the game for both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

In essence, the synopsis of this game’s rating is not surprising since it has been released on Xbox Series and PC for a considerable period. For those who haven’t played it yet, here’s what it entails: This is an action-adventure game where you play as Senua, a Pict warrior, fighting against Viking oppressors to save her people. From a third-person perspective, you explore Icelandic landscapes and villages, engaging in intense combat with various enemies such as Vikings, ghostly beings, and cultists. The combat is fast-paced, characterized by gory effects like blood splatter, screams of pain, and gruesome finishing moves that involve impalement. Scenes of impaling deaths are prevalent; for instance, one distant scene shows a villain chopping off a man’s arm. Cutscenes may include decapitation or dismemberment, and some areas contain decaying corpses and severed limbs stained with blood. The word “fk” is used throughout the game.

This piece of information becomes even more captivating because another listing has popped up (through VGC) suggesting that Limited Run is intending to produce a physical version of the original game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, for the Nintendo Switch as well!

As a gamer, I find it odd that even though Microsoft owns the studio behind Hellblade (Ninja Theory), they aren’t taking charge of the physical copy distribution. Instead, they’ve given the task to Limited Run Games, a niche video game publisher known for working with indie developers – quite a change from their usual lineup!

Hellblade 2, due out on PS5, hasn’t set a release date yet, but it promises some exciting new elements. These additions will also be available free of charge to players on Xbox and PC through an update. The idea that the original Hellblade might come to the Switch 2 isn’t too unexpected considering Microsoft’s recent approach to multi-platform gaming.

Previously, we shared news about anticipated Xbox games transitioning onto the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2021, with the initial Hellblade potentially being the first of a series of once Xbox-exclusive titles making an appearance.
