This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Summary
- Imu grants immortality to Holy Knights.
- Gaban can counter immortality with Divine Techniques.
- Divine Techniques cause damage to body and soul.
As a die-hard fan of One Piece, I can’t help but marvel at the sheer brilliance of the Elbaf arc! Each chapter seems to bring new, jaw-dropping revelations, and now, we’re witnessing epic battles that are nothing short of spectacular. Oda has been consistently hitting it out of the park with this arc, leaving fans ecstatic about where he’s taking Elbaf next. The unveiling of Imu as the primary antagonist has us on the edge of our seats, eagerly anticipating how the story unfolds and how the Holy Knights will ultimately be defeated.
Fortunately, Oda has unveiled a new form of power capable of opposing not only the immortality of the Holy Knights and Five Elders, but perhaps even Imu themselves. Remarkably, this concept was initially introduced in the story at an earlier point, but it’s now being delved into more deeply.
How The Holy Knights Are Immortal
- Imu Grants Immortality To People
- Gaban Can Counter Immortality
The Holy Knights are invincible beings who cannot be killed, a fact made clear in battles like Robin versus Sommers and Usopp versus Gunko. Despite this, even powerful pirates like Luffy have no way to defeat them due to their immortality. However, Scopper Gaban, as shown in chapters 1148 and 1149 of One Piece, is a formidable character with the ability to counteract the immortality of the Holy Knights. He’s on par with the legendary pirate Roger.

Gaban swiftly overpowered Sommers, demonstrating his immense strength. The mystery of how he defeated the immortality of the Holy Knights is revealed through the unique method he employed, and the intriguing name given to it. In Japanese, this technique is called Futenraku, which originates from a Buddhist term “天楽” meaning celestial music played by divine beings in heaven. In English, we can translate this technique as Divine Axe Symphony. Remarkably, Gaban’s Captain, Gol D. Roger, also possessed a similar technique, named Kamusari or Divine Departure in Japanese.
Why Divine Techniques Can Counter Immortality
Divine Techniques Hit The Soul Directly
In the world of One Piece, the Divine Techniques are intriguing abilities unlike any other offensive move seen in the narrative. Unlike regular attacks that only harm the physical body, these techniques have a profound impact on the target’s very soul. For example, Gaban’s Futenraku sliced through Sommers’ body and soul, preventing regeneration. Similarly, when Roger used Kamusari on Oden, he left him bewildered. The mystery deepened when Shanks employed Kamusari against Kid, causing fans to question how a 3 billion berry pirate could lose in a single attack. Now it becomes clear why such an outcome occurred, as Shanks inflicted soul damage upon Kid.

The Users Of Divine Techniques
Gaban, Shanks, Roger, And Joy Boy Are The Confirmed Users So Far
To this point, details about the Divine Techniques from One Piece remain scarce, but some users have demonstrated their mastery over them. For instance, Gaban employed it against Sommers, while Shanks used it against Kid, and Roger used it against Oden. It’s plausible that Emeth utilized Joy Boy’s Haki in a similar manner with Egghead.
In the world of One Piece, there might be alternative ways to inflict damage on souls. For example, soul damage could occur through the use of Brook’s Yomi Yomi no Mi, or even with Big Mom’s Soru Soru no Mi. Although not many characters have demonstrated this ability yet, it’s safe to assume that fans will soon witness Luffy and other characters using this power in the future.
One Piece Chapter 1150 will be released next week! As always, we’ll get our hands on it this coming Sunday. In Japan, the chapter will become available at 12AM JST on Monday, but don’t worry if you’re not in Japan because most international readers can access the chapter on May 11.
