Out of all the Disney films from the 2000s, it’s hard to overlook the remarkable success of the 2D animated classic, “Lilo & Stitch.” The plot revolves around a mischievous alien named Stitch who accidentally lands on Earth and crosses paths with a solitary girl named Lilo. As they join forces, they develop a powerful bond and impart valuable lessons about family, all while engaging in various humorous escapades together.
In the 2025 adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch,” you’ll notice that it largely preserves the core themes and crucial scenes from the initial release. However, like many Disney reboots, this version does feature several alterations. While some modifications are logical, others might leave devoted fans feeling a bit puzzled. Here are the most significant changes worth noting.
Both versions of Lilo & Stitch will be spoiled.
6. Jumba And Pleakley Turn Human
The Ensuing Incident

In the new version, the story begins with Stitch standing trial and subsequently breaking free, much like in the original. Instead of Pleakley suggesting the capture of Stitch on Earth, it’s Jumba who strikes a deal this time around. One noticeable difference right from the start is that Jumba no longer speaks with a Russian accent. However, the more significant twist unfolds when Jumba and Pleakley arrive on Earth, as they possess human cloning capabilities.
Using DNA samples, they can adopt human appearances, making it a more practical choice financially since animating Jumba and Pleakley in live-action could be tougher than their original costume designs. Additionally, the presence of a portal gun might be a reference to the popular Portal series, considering a trap is mentioned later on.
5. Lilo And Nani Have Neighbors
David Gets A Grandma

In the original version of the story, David’s residence on the island isn’t specifically mentioned. However, in the remake, we find out that he lives near Lilo and Nani. Moreover, unlike being solitary in the first version, this time around, David has a new character to keep him company – his grandmother, Tutu. She is portrayed by Amy Hill, who previously provided the voice for Mrs. Hasagawa in the original movie and later appeared in the Disney animated series as well.
In the remake, it proved entertaining to bring back an original cast member, and Tutu plays a significant part. Furthermore, Tutu’s character reinforces the concept that Ohana transcends blood ties, making anyone a potential family member – a theme echoed in the initial movie, although it undergoes slight adjustments later on.
4. There Are Two Social Workers
Also, Cobra Bubbles Is Still CIA

In the new version, it’s not just Tutu who’s played by a veteran actress; Tia Carrere also reprises her role. In the original film, she voiced Nani, a native Hawaiian character that added authenticity to the cast. Now, in the remake, she portrays Mrs. Kekoa, Nani’s social worker. As for Cobra Bubbles, he remains in the movie, but his backstory has been updated. In the original, he was a retired CIA agent turned social worker. In the remake, however, he starts off as a current CIA operative.
In this scenario, both bubbles and various other entities are examining the cause of Stitch’s crash. This means that not only Jumba and Pleakley are on the hunt for Stitch, but so is the CIA. Bubbles decides to disguise himself as a social worker, working alongside Mrs. Kekoa, in order to get nearer to Stitch. It’s worth noting that unlike before, Bubbles has no prior connections to the Roswell alien invasion, making this his first encounter with extraterrestrial beings.
3. The Big Confrontation
Jumba Is THE Villain

Initially in the film, Jumba locates Stitch at Lilo’s residence, leading to a tumultuous clash that leaves the home in ruins. Amidst the commotion, Captain Gantu seizes both Lilo and Stitch, but Stitch manages to break free. In his quest for Lilo’s rescue, Stitch enlists Jumba and Pleakley as allies. Eventually, Jumba undergoes a significant transformation and decides to assist Stitch in the mission.
In the original story, Jumba experiences a significant character development which results in him and Pleakley becoming part of the family, just as much as Stitch does. However, in the remake, Captain Gantu is noticeably absent, and instead, it’s Jumba who emerges as the main antagonist. He wreaks havoc by destroying the house and kidnapping Stitch to transform him into Experiment 627. Lilo, on the other hand, covertly boards the spaceship and liberates Stitch. The ensuing chaos results in the ship crashing into the ocean.
2. Stitch Drowns, Again
Nani Learns To Run Underwater

Following the ship’s explosion, Lilo and Stitch are sent tumbling into the sea. Since Stitch is built with unique molecules, getting wet causes him to sink to the ocean floor – similar to how characters like Luffy from “One Piece” react in water. However, as Lilo isn’t yet able to, she can’t manage to rescue Stitch from this predicament.
In this rephrased version: David, along with Nani, arrive to save Lilo, deciding initially to leave Stitch behind. However, when Lilo pleads for help in rescuing him, the concept of ‘Ohana’, which means no one gets left behind, is emphasized. As Nani plunges into the ocean to reach Stitch, she realizes her strength isn’t enough to bring him up from the depths. Instead, she swims along the sea floor in a desperate attempt to save him. There comes a tense moment when it seems like Stitch might not survive before they manage to revive him using jumper cables. This scene is an innovative twist on the surfing scare from earlier, where this time it’s Stitch who needs the rescue.
1. The Ending Message
Ohana Means Family, But Also Go To College

In the initial film, it seemed that Nani was a renowned surfing champion, yet after the loss of her parents, she abandoned her aspirations to focus on caring for Lilo. However, in the remake, Nani continues to cherish her love for surfing and even participated in competitions. A fresh aspect of her character is introduced: she has a passion for marine biology. Initially, she intended to pursue this field in college, but due to having to take care of Lilo, she was unable to do so.
In the reimagined version of the story, instead of the authorities granting Nani permission to become Lilo’s guardian, she voluntarily hands over custody to Tutu and David. Lilo grants Nani permission to return to college, which she does, but continues to stay connected through video calls and visits using the portal gun. Bubbles makes occasional appearances as it appears he has left his CIA post behind. The departure of Nani leaves a distinct impression when the movie concludes.
