In a return to his renowned character, Michael C. Hall will grace our screens again this summer on Paramount +, with Showtime. The premiere, spanning two episodes, is set for July 11, followed by new installments each week. Characters like Angel Batista and Harry Morgan are slated to reappear, hinting at a revival of the original series’ atmosphere. Yet, one crucial aspect must make a comeback for the spin-off to truly embody Dexter:
What’s missing from this spin-off series to be a true embodiment of Dexter is none other than the dark and twisted moral compass that made the original so captivating.
In the initial show, Dexter would obtain a blood sample from his victims prior to their demise. Subsequently, this serial killer with a moral compass created slides of the blood as souvenirs and stored them in a box within an air vent at his residence. However, these keepsakes eventually proved detrimental for Dexter when he left one behind at a crime scene, enabling Maria LaGuerta to deduce that he was indeed the Bay Harbor Butcher. Since then, Dexter has refrained from collecting trophies. Yet, with numerous unscrupulous individuals still needing to be dealt with in the revival, it may be wise for him to resume his old habits.

For seven consecutive series, Dexter Morgan, a forensic analyst at Miami Metro, found himself taking lives and collecting blood samples from his victims. Like many serial killers, he had a habit of keeping mementos from his crimes, but his collection of blood slides wasn’t as gruesome as some others in his circle. However, Dexter’s trophy hunting almost proved to be his undoing on two occasions. In the second season, James Doakes uncovered his hidden stash and deduced that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher. Dexter managed to pin the Bay Harbor Butcher case on Doakes, but this didn’t deter him from continuing his collection in subsequent seasons.

After discovering Dexter’s hidden horrors, Debra forced him to cease his collection of blood slides. Two factors led to this: firstly, her repulsion towards his morbid hobby; secondly, the investigation by Maria LaGuerta, which linked one of his slides to the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Following the death of Ray Speltzer, Dexter burned his cherished box of blood slides with his victim, marking the end of his trophy collection. However, Resurrection may signal a new chapter in Dexter’s life.
The Return Of The Blood Slides In Resurrection Would Be A Good Way To Get Dexter Back To His Roots
In the final season of the original series, it wasn’t characteristic of Dexter’s trademark kills without the blood slides. However, a hint of his old habits resurfaced in the limited series, New Blood, when he created an improvised blood slide using two glass pieces while killing Matt Caldwell. Despite New Blood being a step back towards form after a less impressive ‘final’ season, it was still lacking the iconic Dexter kill scenes that were marked by his signature blood slides. These scenes are crucial to Dexter’s modus operandi and should make a comeback in the upcoming sequel spin-off series, Resurrection.
If Dexter: Resurrection continues for several seasons, its distinctive kill scenes might significantly contribute to its success. Fans are eagerly anticipating the moment when Dexter appears once again in his green Henley and Kill T-shirt, armed with a needle, poised over a despicable villain on his operating table, drawing a small sample of their blood before they meet their gruesome fate. The executive producer of Dexter: Resurrection hinted at the possible return of the iconic blood slides in a social media post back in April.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel my heart racing when I gaze upon this photograph displaying a surgical scalpel and blood dropper next to a row of slides. This setup unmistakably hints at the imminent return of the blood slides in the upcoming series, Resurrection, and I must say, it’s a thrilling prospect for long-time fans of the show. In fact, the accompanying caption from Reynolds reads: “It’s gonna be that kind of night on set”. July 11 can’t come soon enough!
