The performances and contests in this show may not strictly fall under the horror genre, but they certainly highlight some intense scenes illustrating the dread lurking in an apocalypse, whether it’s human or zombie-related. This season had many spine-tingling moments that kept viewers on the edge of their seats, proving that a story can be gripping, fast-paced, and truly terrifying all at once.
Spoiler Alert: Major details for both the game and the show will be discussed in this article
7. In The Pipes
Episode 1 – Future Days

One standout feature of the infected in The Last of Us is their plant-like traits, which are a result of the virus they carry. These characteristics include tendrils and fungal spores, giving them an appearance that’s much more chilling than regular zombies because it’s not just about brain hunger. In the second season, this concept is expanded upon, with a vast network of root-like structures seen growing through a pipe into Jackson, serving as a means for the infected to detect potential new hosts.
The scene in the show serves as a haunting portrayal of the town’s vulnerability, highlighting the persistent danger lurking beyond its boundaries, even if it doesn’t trigger immediate action or death. It symbolizes the relentless spread of the horrors plaguing the world, eager to infect as many lives as possible.
6. Nora’s Death
Episode 5 – Feel Her Love

Following a city-wide search for Abby’s team in Seattle, Ellie eventually locates one member separately. In a high-speed pursuit with Nora that ensues, Nora is ultimately trapped in a sealed-off zone and falls to the ground exhausted. Initially smirking as if expecting Ellie to succumb to the spores too, Nora’s expression changes drastically upon learning the identity of the immune girl.
The overall scene portrays Ellie in an ominous, sinister manner, contrasting sharply with her previous vulnerability. She appears unrepentant and unwilling to yield, mirroring the suffering she inflicts upon Nora, replicating the torment Joel experienced earlier. This act may subject Nora to a destiny that could surpass even death’s severity.
5. Isaac Dixon Torturing A Seraphite
Episode 4 – Day One

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but admire the chilling portrayal of Isaac Dixon – a ruthless figure who seems to show compassion only towards those who share his allegiance. His debut on the screen was nothing short of shocking, as he mercilessly took out an entire FEDRA platoon with a single grenade. This man’s willingness to take lives for his cause is borderline boundless, and it becomes particularly evident when dealing with the Seraphites.
In episode 4, he casually discusses his preference for certain pans before the end of the world, but then things take a dark turn as he starts to interrogate a defenseless Seraphite brutally for information. The gruesome imagery intensifies the scene’s eerie atmosphere, making it uncomfortable to witness as he appears unfazed by the suffering he inflicts on an innocent being.
4. Jackson Attack
Episode 2 – Through The Valley

In this particular episode of the series, we witness one of the most intense scenes that underscores the relentless behavior of the infected. The swarm, previously frozen under snow, miraculously awakens, and the sheer size of it surpasses all expectations. Thousands upon thousands of these ferocious beings charge in unison towards Jackson’s fortification, launching a brutal assault on the walls. Despite the defenses appearing strong, they are breached almost instantaneously by the relentless force, leaving one to wonder just how solid they truly were.
Regardless of our efforts to fortify and repel them, the sheer volume of infected individuals is overwhelming. They rampage through our streets, indiscriminately killing everything in their path. The arrival of a Bloater, an immense, relentless infected creature that feels no pain or hesitation, only intensifies the terror. Although most of the town survives, the devastation left behind is substantial. This incident serves as a haunting testament to the unyielding might of the horde.
3. Spores
Episode 5 – Feel Her Love

Initially, it was believed that the infection could only spread through physical means such as bites or contamination of the bloodstream. However, episode five presents a significant twist to this notion, revealing an expansive quarantine zone teeming with spores and towering fungal structures. Shockingly, some unlucky individuals are shown to merge with these very walls.
Despite being immune, the realization that the threat has mutated into a different form could pave the way for further calamities in the future. This underscores the rapid adaptability of the virus, showing it’s not just a simple menace, but one capable of evolving and exhibiting more complex behaviors than mere mindless drones within a short span of time.
2. Infected Subway
Episode 4 – Day One

In the fourth episode, there’s an overwhelming surge of action and infected characters, all happening simultaneously. A subway station filled with rubble and shrouded in darkness is the scene, illuminated sparsely by flashlights and a red light casting a blood-red glow on the walls. It doesn’t take long before FEDRA agents are overpowered, leaving Ellie and Dina trapped in a confined space, with barely any time to contemplate an escape strategy.
The persistency of the chase doesn’t wane, as the crowd doggedly follows their quarry, driving them towards the exits. In this desperate situation, Ellie resorts to sacrificing herself by allowing an infected to bite her, a move aimed at shielding Dina. This thrilling chase scene maintains its intensity throughout and vividly illustrates the mindless determination exhibited by the horde of the infected.
1. Joel’s Death
Episode 2 – Through The Valley

In a world overrun by zombies, it’s surprisingly humanity that proves to be the most terrifying danger. Abby, who crosses paths with Joel and Dina coincidentally during their travels, manages to lead them to a mountain lodge under false pretenses. Once there, she unmasks her true intentions and proceeds to inflict maximum pain and suffering on Joel and Dina, demonstrating the darkest aspects of human nature.
In a different phrasing: Abby’s relentless assault using a shotgun blast, golf club blows, and hand-to-hand combat, leaves no room for mercy, much like the ruthless infected lurking nearby. The intensity increases when Ellie arrives, forced to witness but unable to intervene as Abby delivers the climactic strike. This scene, with its graphic violence, is among the most distressing in the series and serves as a striking example of brutality.
