The Psion, also known as the Psychic, is a class with psychic abilities that has been featured in numerous editions of Dungeons & Dragons over time. In 2017, D&D experimented with a version of this idea called the Mystic for the 5th Edition, although it was never published. However, certain aspects of this concept can be found in official subclasses such as the Psi Warrior Fighter and the Soulknife Rogue.

Currently, Dungeons & Dragons is preparing to introduce a new character class that taps into psychic powers – the Psion. This playtest document from Unearthed Arcana marks the first time a base class of this type has been released since 2019, when the Artificer was introduced. The Psion, who relies on Intelligence for their spellcasting abilities, can use Psionic Energy dice to showcase mental prowess and boost their rolls. In addition, they can switch between Offensive and Defensive Psionic Modes during combat, allowing them to adapt to different situations. Players have the option to further customize their Psion character by selecting from various Psionic Disciplines, which offer additional ways to utilize Psionic Energy for special attacks or spell enhancements, as well as boosting ability checks.

The Psykinetic excels in telekinesis, employing powerful spells like Shield, Telekinetic Crush, and Telekinesis for protection and destruction. Lastly, the Telepath stands out as a master of mental abilities, boasting superior mind-reading capabilities, telepathic communication, and psyche-shattering techniques.

This Unearthed Arcana not only presents the Psion, but also introduces Wild Talents, a fresh category of Dungeons and Dragons feats that revolve around unique psionic abilities. Ranging from the emotional sensitivity of Empath and the psychic talent Clairsentience to the control over elements offered by Cryokinesis and Pyrokinesis, these feats come with beneficial traits tailored to their specific psionic domains, and also include a selection of enchanting spells. Although they require no other prerequisites, it’s essential to know that once a character selects a Wild Talent, they are unable to choose another.

It’s uncertain at this time where the Psion character might make an official appearance in Dungeons and Dragons games, as none of the current development books seem to align with the psionic theme. However, fans eager to influence the development of this class prior to its release should look forward to providing feedback after June 3, when a survey for the Psion becomes available.
