Summary
- A Switch 2 console was discovered in the wild early, but it requires a system update on June 5 to function.
- A fan shared an unboxing video ahead of the console’s global launch on June 5.
- Nintendo has already warned customers to avoid Switch 2 scalpers.
In just nine days before the Nintendo Switch 2 officially hits the market, an enthusiast posted a brief video showing the unboxing of a console unit that was acquired early, prior to its scheduled June 5 release. However, it turned out that the Nintendo Switch 2 that was illegally sold is locked behind a system update which Nintendo won’t release until June 5, making the console inoperable until then.
A week prior to the global release of the Switch 2, details about the console were already leaked. As a follow-up to the first Switch model, the Switch 2 boasts enhancements such as a larger screen, upgraded Joy-Con 2 controllers, and fresh apps like GameChat for seamless video and audio communication with friends through the Nintendo Switch Online network. In anticipation of its launch, significant retailers in the US have been receiving their first batches of the Switch 2 consoles. Employees from these stores have subsequently posted pictures of their consoles, which are kept under lock and key in display cages, set to be unlocked on June 5.
Even though Nintendo and their retail partners have tried their hardest, a pre-release version of the Switch 2 has popped up unexpectedly. A user named a2dubai on YouTube shared a brief video revealing the design of the Switch 2’s main box. However, it’s uncertain how a2dubai got the console, which was obtained nine days before its official launch. The video was later removed from YouTube, but Stealth40k reposted it on Twitter. Upon opening the package, the first things viewers notice are the Switch 2 tablet and Joy-Con 2 controllers. Although a2dubai didn’t show off more in the video, they mentioned that some essential features of the Switch 2 were absent at first. Users will need to download an update on June 5 to ensure the console operates correctly, meaning it can’t be used effectively before then.
A Nintendo Switch 2 Console Was Released Before June 5
The video emerged as Nintendo and Japanese retailers such as Yahoo Shopping issued consumer advisories urging buyers to steer clear of scalper advertisements for the upcoming Switch 2. With Nintendo promising to manufacture multiple millions of Switch 2 systems over the next few months, we’ll have to wait and see how many consoles will make it into consumers’ possession by early June.
On the initial release of the Switch 2, it boasts a lineup of 24 games, featuring titles like “Mario Kart World” and “Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time”. With most earlier Switch games also compatible, it’s uncertain which game Switch 2 enthusiasts will choose to play first.
