Funcom has provided an in-depth sneak peek into the endgame mechanics for the upcoming open-world survival MMO titled Dune: Awakening, set within the universe of Dune. During a recent developer livestream, they showcased the mid-to-late game aspect called Landsraad, and shared additional details about the combat system and the distinctive abilities from the Schools of the Imperium.
In a world created by Funcom, the game titled “Dune: Awakening” is an open-world MMO survival adventure that unfolds on the barren planet of Arrakis. Instead of our familiar timeline, this game presents an alternate reality where Paul Atreides never existed, plunging Arrakis into a devastating civil war between Houses Atreides and Harkonnen. Players have the opportunity to side with either faction and engage in fierce battles against their rivals to dominate the valuable spice resource that is central to the Dune universe. Besides the typical survival elements such as crafting and base construction, players can also indulge in various combat styles for those keen on participating in massive player versus player conflicts.
Funcom provided players with a more detailed glimpse of the final-stage content for Dune: Awakening during a special presentation. One significant aspect unveiled in Dune: Awakening is the Landsraad, an administrative body comprising the Great Houses, which has authority over decisions impacting all servers within a single universe. Unlike traditional MMO faction systems that primarily concentrate on Player vs Player (PvP) or territory management, the Landsraad offers a political dimension where representatives from various Houses engage in discussions and make decisions that affect the entire player population.
Dune Awakening’s Endgame Combat System
The development team additionally provided details about the fighting system in Dune: Awakening, combining close-quarters, long-range, vehicular, and skill-based battles. A significant aspect of this system involves the Schools of the Imperium, four distinct areas of expertise that influence a character’s combat approach and growth. At character creation, players select a School, gaining access to a unique skill set and initial ability. As they journey across Arrakis, players can acquire abilities from other Schools, offering them additional options for tailoring their battle strategies.
For the first time, this demonstration offers a genuine glimpse into the endgame content of “Dune Awakening,” as these elements were not accessible during the public beta that took place in May. Although the testing phase enabled players to delve into early-game aspects such as crafting and survival, the late-game material remained confidential. However, the final “Dune: Awakening” beta event attracted close to 40,000 concurrent players eager to embark on their journeys across Arrakis.
