Summary
- One Steam account plays Civilization 5 for 50k hours over 10 years.
- Civilization 5 remained popular despite the release of Civilization 6 in 2016.
- Debate ensues about whether the playtime was accumulated by one person or multiple individuals on the same account.
A Steam account, which is approximately 10 years old, has amassed over 50,000 hours of gameplay on Sid Meier’s Civilization 5. While Sid Meier’s Civilization 5 and other games in Firaxis Games’ esteemed series are some of the most acclaimed in the 4X strategy genre, this extensive playtime implies that someone has spent more time over the past decade playing it than not playing it.
Back in September 2010, around fifteen years ago, we saw the launch of “Civilization 5”. This release was a significant milestone for the series, as some devoted fans consider “Civilization 4” as having perfectly encapsulated the original formula. However, “Civilization 5” brought about real innovation, introducing elements like hexagonal grids, Natural Wonders, and the removal of transport units, which set it apart and made it a true game-changer in the series.
Even though Civilization 6 came out in 2016, Civilization 5 continued to be one of the most popular Steam games that year. Although Civilization 6 has been better received by fans among the two and subsequent releases, a user named oldcsm52 on Steam has dedicated an astounding amount of time to playing only Civilization 5 – so much so that they’ve logged over 50,000 hours of gameplay. To put it into perspective, this is equivalent to more than five and a half years of continuous playtime for the game on Steam, considering that oldcsm52 has been active on their account since April 2015, meaning they’ve spent over half of the account’s lifetime playing Civilization 5.
Civilization 5 Player Racks Up More than 5 Years of Playtime
I’ve got to admit, the mind-boggling number of hours played has left me questioning whether one person could have been responsible for such a long gaming session. You see, back in March 2024, Steam introduced their Families game-sharing feature, allowing access from multiple devices. This could mean that several players were taking turns on the same account before then.
Moreover, it’s been suggested that the games might have been left running without someone actively playing them. However, even if multiple people were leaving it open in the background for 10 years, accumulating 50,000 hours of gameplay would still be quite an achievement!
Many people believe that the extensive playtime spent on the strategy game series is justified due to its addictive nature, often referring to the phrase “just one more turn” which signifies losing track of time while playing. Some have humorously pointed out that 50,000 hours of gameplay equates to approximately three games in the Civilization series.
