Silent Hill 2 Remake Devs Give Update on PS5 Pro Patch

Summary

  • Bloober Team confirms that it’s still chipping away at a dedicated PS5 Pro upgrade for the Silent Hill 2 remake.
  • Silent Hill 2 was among the very first PS5 Pro enhanced games, but faced major image quality issues on the console.
  • A November 2024 patch aimed to fix Silent Hill 2’s issues on PS5 Pro, but could only do so partially.

According to Bloober Team, they are still actively developing an improvement update specifically for the PlayStation 5 Pro version of the Silent Hill 2 remake. The initial patch for this game had significant issues with visual quality, and after six months, there have been no substantial enhancements noticed when running it on the mid-generation console.

When the PS5 Pro was released towards the end of 2024, it was announced that many games, including a remake of Silent Hill 2, would take advantage of its more powerful hardware. However, gamers found that not only was there no substantial visual improvement in the remake, but surprisingly, it ran worse on the PS5 Pro compared to the regular PS5. This unexpected degradation included a noticeable shimmering effect and flickering reflections, caused by problems with the implementation of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) in the Silent Hill 2 remake.

In response to the criticism, Bloober Team issued Patch 1.06 for the Silent Hill 2 remake in November 2024, aimed at resolving some of the graphical issues on PS5 Pro. Although the update alleviated some problems, the shimmering effect remained. Recently, Bloober Team has spoken up about Silent Hill 2’s PS5 Pro patch via Eurogamer. They announced, “We are collaborating with the publisher to find a solution, and we will disclose more information as soon as it becomes available.

Bloober Team Continues to Work on Silent Hill 2’s PS5 Pro Upgrade

It’s been confirmed that Bloober Team is still working on an upgraded version of the Silent Hill 2 remake for the PS5 Pro, though its release hasn’t happened yet. The studio hasn’t given a specific timeline for when this update will be available, leaving fans wondering what might be causing the delay in releasing this upgrade. It’s worth noting that games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora also faced similar issues with the PS5 Pro but were eventually fixed shortly after they were identified. Here’s hoping Bloober Team will bring the PS5 Pro upgrade for Silent Hill 2 to players as soon as possible!

Based on some reports, problematic implementations of PSSR have allegedly prompted Sony to inspect the underlying technology as well. It appears that Sony has released several updates to PSSR since the launch of the PS5 Pro, with a focus on enhancing its AI-powered image upscaler. There’s been talk lately that Sony might be planning to roll out an significantly improved version of PSSR – informally known as PSSR 2 – which could potentially enable 4K 120fps and 8K 60fps gaming on the PS5 Pro.
