- The success of The Boys spinoff Gen V hints at a promising future for the franchise.
As a passionate movie critic, I can’t help but express my thoughts as “The Boys” approaches its conclusion. While fans eagerly anticipate which talented cast members will bring their unique blend of action and satire to cleaner pastures in future superhero series, one cherished character seems reluctant to make the transition.
The series The Boys has solidified its position in contemporary culture by introducing superhero comic book characters outside of DC and Marvel to the mainstream, at a time when the major publishers were grappling with genre exhaustion. From the outset, it was evident that The Boys was likely the best live-action show adapted from a comic book, an achievement all the more impressive considering how significantly the series enhanced its source material while eventually departing from it entirely to explore superior narrative paths. Some of the strongest storylines centered around the main antagonist, Homelander.
The show The Boys has become a significant part of popular culture by introducing superhero characters from comic books other than DC and Marvel to mainstream audiences, when the leading publishers were struggling with genre burnout. From the beginning, it was obvious that The Boys was one of the best live-action series based on a comic book, an accomplishment even more impressive given how much the show improved upon its source material and eventually moved beyond it to develop superior storylines. The most impactful of these stories revolved around Homelander, the main antagonist.
Regarding The Boys’ final season, there are concerns it may follow the pattern of Game of Thrones, leaving fans searching for another source of violence and gore. Meanwhile, the show’s stars might be more preoccupied with pursuing other opportunities. Unfortunately, the much-loved villain from the series has no plans to switch allegiances to the leading force in the genre. This was confirmed by Austin Medeiros on X, as Antony Starr expressed no desire to transfer his skills to Marvel Comics Universe (MCU) upon wrapping up his role as Homelander. A recent post by Medeiros, which includes a picture of himself and 49-year-old Starr (taken at the time of the question), shows that the actor was dressed appropriately in bloodstained pants.
The Boys’ Antony Starr Isn’t Looking To Join Another Franchise Any Time Soon
Sorry DC And Marvel Fans… Looks Like A No-Go
Although Antony Starr’s response didn’t fuel much anticipation for Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans hoping to see him as a new Green Goblin, it’s clear that he appreciates the quality of performances in the Marvel franchise. His subsequent statement confirmed this: “When asked if I would play the new Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in the MCU, I said ‘I COULD DO THAT!’, but Willem Dafoe did an exceptional job so maybe not.'” The outstanding portrayal of Green Goblin by Dafoe, particularly during the Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and more recently in No Way Home, is universally acclaimed. Similarly, Starr’s performance as Homelander in The Boys has been so captivating that he’s had to caution fans who praise the character, despite his undeniably villainous nature.
The spin-off series, titled Gen V , was highly successful and led to its renewal for a second season in 2023. This new season is expected to premiere on Prime Video soon. Characters from the main cast of The Boys may make appearances in Gen V since members of the Gen V team are deeply involved in the final season. Fans can also anticipate the return of popular characters Jenson Ackles and Aya Cash in Vought Rising, with Aya Cash hinting at exciting developments for the upcoming prequel series. As for Starr’s future, fans can expect him to receive many offers following his impressive performance. Regardless of what he chooses to do next, it will likely be a role he is excited about and rightfully so.
You can stream “The Boys” on Amazon’s Prime Video service, and the fifth season is scheduled to debut there in 2026.
