Persona 5: The Phantom X and P6 Could Be Two Peas in a Pod

Summary

  • Persona 6 faces high expectations and development challenges.
  • Phantom X mobile game could lay narrative groundwork for Persona 6.
  • Crossover events can sustain fan engagement and offer teaser content.

Atlus hasn’t said much about the anticipated game, Persona 6. However, fans have been quite vocal about it! Every tweet, hint, or mistake sparks debate and speculation. Delays in development due to studio reorganization and the pandemic, along with the high expectations following Persona 5 Royal, have increased the pressure immensely. Atlus needs to create something fresh, well-crafted, and impactful, and that requires careful work.

As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming mobile and PC title, “Persona 5: The Phantom X.” This release on June 26 presents Atlus with an excellent opportunity to reconnect with their global fanbase without completely abandoning talk about “Persona 6.” A collaborative event or a sneak peek chapter could subtly set up the narrative, giving “The Phantom X” a significant role and providing a solid foundation for “Persona 6.

Phantom X Could Set Up Persona 6

Mobile games commonly face issues with narrative significance, but The Phantom X has the potential to distinguish itself. Instead of serving as a standalone tale, it could bolster its relevance by intertwining elements from Persona 6 into its seasonal occurrences. Atlus might introduce an extensive prequel storyline that unveils a crucial location, character, or supernatural aspect that features in Persona 6. Scattering a few lore hints can fuel speculation and keep players hooked.

In a similar fashion to mobile games such as Fate/Grand Order, a crossover event could be designed. This design would see new characters introduced through limited-time chapters. If The Phantom X offers players an opportunity to engage with a character confirmed for Persona 6, it not only encourages regular logins but also deepens the emotional bond with upcoming events.

In a similar fashion, The Phantom X might foreshadow upcoming storylines by incorporating temporary missions linked to fresh characters or Personas, much like how Persona 5 Royal did through its Confidant events and hidden endings.

A Crossover Can Sustain Fan Momentum

Maintaining fan excitement during prolonged waits can be challenging, but certainly not unattainable. The Phantom X, with its design for regular content updates, is ideally suited for a drip-feed approach. Atlus could consider sharing visual novels, sneak peeks of side missions, or even hints at costumes related to Persona 6. This gradual release would help establish a storyline connection.

Live-service games such as “Genshin Impact” reveal upcoming regions and characters by doing so well in advance, using a similar approach, “The Phantom X” can transition from being just filler to providing hints or foreshadowing. If managed effectively, it could make the launch of “Persona 6” feel more like an extension rather than a fresh beginning without any connection to what’s come before.

Atlus appears to be growing more enthusiastic about broadening their media horizons. If The Phantom X gains significant traction as a storytelling hub, it might open doors for the promotion of Persona 6 via partnerships in animation, comic books, or musical collaborations.

Persona Remakes May Fill the Gaps

As fans eagerly anticipate, Atlus is currently working on remakes of their popular games. The remastered version of Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army, titled “Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army Remastered“, is scheduled for release in June 2025, and there’s been a surge of talk about a possible remake of Persona 4. With the original voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, confirming he won’t be returning, this has sparked discussions about potential recasting or reimagining of the character.

This method follows Square Enix’s approach prior to the release of Final Fantasy 16, by releasing remasters and smaller spin-offs at intervals to maintain the franchise’s prominence. Atlus could be subtly preparing fans for a comprehensive return to the universe of Persona through remakes, which will serve to update the lore, tone, and themes that will underpin the creation of Persona 6.

In the meantime, The Phantom X might serve as an innovative sandbox for experimenting with fresh concepts. While reboots cater to nostalgic feelings, this mobile game could gauge the public’s reaction to darker narratives, dual lead characters, or novel combat mechanics prior to the launch of the next sequel.
