Despite the Dragon Ball Super anime taking an extended break after the Tournament of Power storyline, the manga version of the series persisted until 2024, offering some of the most cherished arcs throughout the franchise. One such arc was the Granolah saga, which stood out for its intense emotional impact within the series. This arc delved into several poignant themes like the price of revenge, the weight of past transgressions, mercy, and personal development.
Along with being one of Dragon Ball’s best arcs, it also introduced many important villains into the story. Some were nuanced while others were outright evil, but they all worked perfectly with the themes that this arc tried to portray and were each incredible characters to witness. In this article, let’s go over the main villains of the Granolah arc and see why they go down as some of the most memorable in the franchise.
Granolah Was The Central Figure Of The Entire Arc
The Titular Cerealian
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 67, “Happy Endings… And Then…” |
---|---|
Due Date | December 20, 2020 |
In the series titled “Dragon Ball,” the protagonist, Granolah, stands out as one of the most intricately crafted and profound characters ever introduced. His backstory unfolds decades before the main narrative begins: Saiyans were dispatched by Frieza to eliminate his home planet’s inhabitants so that he could sell it off. This tragic event instilled in Granolah a fierce hatred for the Saiyan race and the Galactic Tyrant, Frieza. Despite living peacefully with the Sugarians, the pain of his past remained etched within him. Consequently, Granolah embarked on a quest to amass greater power.
No matter how powerful you are, I remain the strongest in the universe!
Through the power of the Cerealian Dragon Balls, Granolah swiftly caught up to Goku and Vegeta’s might, leading to intense battles against the Saiyans. His strength and strategic intellect even allowed him to defeat Ultra Instinct in a stunning blow. As the story unfolded, he confronted his decisions and considered sacrificing himself for revenge. However, he eventually reconsidered this drastic action, instead choosing to form an alliance with the Saiyans by the end of the arc. This paves the way for him potentially joining the Z-Fighters in the future.
Elec And The Heeters Were The Masterminds Behind The Arc
The Manipulative Villains
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68, “Granolah the Survivor” |
---|---|
Debut Date | January 20, 2021 |
At the outset of the storyline, Granolah initially appeared to be the central antagonist, a formidable adversary whom the protagonists needed to vanquish. However, it gradually became clear that the chain of events leading towards the climactic confrontation at the end of the arc were orchestrated not by Granolah himself, but rather by The Heeters, and more specifically, their leader Elec. This secretive family frequently served as middlemen in Frieza’s transactions involving the sale of planets.
I was once the weakest among us, but Elec raised me to this level. I would do anything for him.
Understanding both the profitability of the business and the constant danger posed by Frieza, Elec devised a strategy: to get Granolah and the Saiyans to fight each other while his brother Gas grew stronger, eventually becoming the most powerful in the universe with the aim of defeating Frieza when the opportunity presented itself. However, even with everything going his way, he hadn’t foreseen Frieza’s sudden increase in power.
Gas Was The Primary Antagonist Of The Arc
Briefly The Strongest In The Universe
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 68, “Granolah the Survivor” |
---|---|
Debut Date | January 20, 2020 |
As the smallest and youngest among the Heeters, Gas was renowned for his immense strength, earning him the title of the group’s muscle. However, his formidable power was rendered insignificant when Granolah fulfilled his wish with the Dragon Balls, causing a surge of jealousy and insecurity within Gas. In an attempt to bridge the gap, he concurred with Elec to make the same wish as Granolah using the Dragon Balls, thus elevating himself to a level comparable to Goku, Vegeta, and Granolah.
I consider this a failure on my part. I had hoped to kill you with the technique I’ve honed.
In the storyline, he took on the main villain part, clashing with the heroic characters and showing great strength at times. However, unbeknownst to him, fulfilling his wish required a trade of years from his life, causing him to become increasingly powerful but also deteriorating physically. This process turned him into a mindless, frail figure. Despite being stronger than the heroes by the end, his decaying body could no longer sustain itself, resulting in Frieza’s one-hit defeat.
Black Frieza Has Changed The Entire Power Hierarchy
The Strongest In The Multiverse
First Appearance | Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 87, “The Universe’s Strongest Appears” |
---|---|
Debut Date | August 20, 2022 |
Towards the culmination of the storyline, spectators were convinced that the heroes’ triumph was imminent since they united against Gas, who was discovered to be near his demise regardless. Yet, this optimism swiftly dissipated at the final moment as the much-loved antagonist made a dramatic reappearance in Super, leaving fans speechless with the manner of his return. Since the Tournament of Power, it has been disclosed that Frieza had been intensely preparing to amplify his power, even going as far as discovering a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on a distant planet and undergoing 10 years’ worth of training.
Meet Black Frieza! Achieving this form took plenty of toil, I’ll have you know!
Consequently, he unveiled his freshly transformed Black Frieza form, which was incredibly potent, eliminating Gas with a solitary strike. Moreover, he later managed to knock out Goku and Vegeta with merely one punch, an astonishing feat considering they were both in their mightiest Divine Forms. This demonstrates that Frieza surpasses any character’s power that fans have encountered so far in the narrative, potentially being the only mortal to match Beerus. The true extent of this form remains to be seen, but it undeniably sets up Frieza as a formidable adversary for the future of the series.
Dragon Ball can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
