In the gaming world, there’s often criticism when developers reuse assets in popular games. However, is this really a major concern? Yet, FromSoftware is currently under fire for the reused assets in Elden Ring Nightreign. But let me tell you something: if you’ve been a dedicated fan, these recycled elements are probably quite intriguing to you.

Instead of constructing new assets from the ground up, Junya Ishizaki opted for asset reuse. Contrary to what may seem like a shortcut or laziness, this approach allowed the developers to concentrate predominantly on gameplay development. “Whether it’s Armor like Artorias or the relentless Nameless King, it’s undeniable that Elden Ring uses a fair amount of reused assets. At first glance, they might appear to be a near duplicate of older games. However, this is not accurate, and a misunderstanding has been circulating among the fanbase.

In the creation of Elden Ring Nightreign, the primary goal was to revolutionize gameplay mechanics. If you’ve dabbled in every FromSoft title, you’d understand their unique blend of familiarity and novelty. Given that Nightreign is the follow-up to Elden Ring, and was produced under a new leadership team, some critics might be overly critical.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Junya Ishizaki shed light on the use of recurring elements in Elden Ring Nightreign. His insights helped clarify aspects of the new title. Fans of video games have always been quick to voice their opinions about alterations to their beloved series. Initially, when Elden Ring was released, many were skeptical, as it was considered a masterpiece. At first, the concept of an open-world soulslike game from FromSoftware didn’t sit well with anyone. However, over time, it grew on people. It’s the gameplay that keeps players engaged, rather than the graphics.

Using the same resources isn’t necessarily a negative act, and some creators even manage to pull it off successfully. Still not convinced? A notable example would be the trees from both games; the resemblance is striking.

While it’s not always ideal to reuse assets, if developers are enhancing them for a more engaging experience, then there’s usually no problem. For instance, Elden Ring Nightreign may be using some recurring assets, but they’ve been incorporated to elevate the gameplay. He himself acknowledged this during his recent interview.

We don’t view it as simple copy-paste. It requires more than just that. For instance, with Nightreign, you’ll notice some similar assets, but they’ve been adapted to enhance the gameplay and have been tailored to fit the unique mechanics of Nightreign. These changes might not be immediately apparent at first sight.

Using advanced cognitive resources can significantly reduce development periods, which was evidently the approach taken by FromSoftware for their latest release. Although this method might be met with debate, the focus here is purely on the fact that it’s an extraordinary game – and that’s what truly counts.
