As a devoted reincarnation of Bethesda’s iconic RPG from 2006, the remastered version, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, retains its engaging gameplay, compelling quests, and an array of captivating characters.
As a gamer immersed in open-world fantasy RPGs, I’ve come to realize that characters play a pivotal role in shaping my gaming experience. Thankfully, The Elder Scrolls series doesn’t disappoint when it comes to offering a diverse array of intriguing, amusing, and downright peculiar individuals to engage with across the various provinces of Tamriel.
1. Glarthir
Skingrad’s Local Conspiracy Theorist
Known for its sprawling vineyards and exquisite wines, Skingrad is among the most affluent cities in the region of Cyrodiil. However, upon arrival, players might initially encounter a resident who appears to have had more than his fair share of Tamika’s West Weald Wine.
In simpler terms, Glarthir is a resident Wood Elf who appears to be harboring some suspicions. He believes that three other townsfolk are hatching a plan against him. If you decide to meet him near the chapel during the evening, it will trigger the “Paranoia Quest,” where you’ll work together to uncover this supposed plot. Glarthir is undeniably an eccentric individual, and although the locals have warned you about him, his paranoid thoughts sometimes make for an amusing mix of peculiarity and humor.
2. Arvena Thelas
A Bit Of A Pet Problem
City of Anvil, nestled among the smaller, more tranquil towns within the province, lies tucked away along the Gold Coast in the west of Cyrodiil. Despite its peaceful demeanor, this place always seems to be teeming with activity, a trait particularly evident through its vibrant inhabitants.
Encounter Arvena Thelas, a Dark Elf resident, dwelling close to the city’s main entrance. She appears ordinary at first glance, and even possesses several beloved pets. However, it’s not unusual for her to be called “the rat lady” by townsfolk, given that her affectionate “little pets” are actually a band of colossal rats who reside in her underground dwelling. Sadly, some of these “precious” rodents have mysteriously vanished, which opens the door for members of the Fighter’s Guild to embark on a mission and uncover the culprit behind this rat theft.
3. Falanu Hlaalu
The Alchemist With A Dark Secret
Returning once more to the West Weald area, focusing on the city of Skingrad, particularly the local apothecary and potion-maker, Falen Hlalus.
At first glance, ‘All Things Alchemical’ might seem like an ordinary alchemy store. However, its unique charm lies in its unconventional owner, who is quick to set it apart. For instance, one of her opening lines could be, ‘By the way, I was just wondering, what’s the penalty for necrophilia in Cyrodiil?’ Such unexpected questions make for an intriguing initial interaction and may not exactly create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, but she is essentially harmless (at least to the living).
4. Big Head
An Argonian With An Interesting Obsession
Exploring The Shivering Isles, you’ll find an abundance of peculiar objects, places, and personalities that are far from ordinary. One such character, who stands out as particularly odd yet entertaining, is a certain collector residing in the city of Bliss.
In the Shivering Isles DLC of the game Oblivion, there’s a character named Big Head, an intelligent Argonian who surprisingly cherishes forks. From his conversations to the ornamentation of his cozy home, forks play a prominent role. The reason behind Big Head’s fascination with forks remains mysterious, but it’s clear that he adds a touch of humor to the game. If you decide to take on his quest, he will ask you to find “The Fork of Horripilation.” Despite the mystery surrounding his fork obsession, Big Head is undeniably one of the more entertaining side characters in the game.
Fun fact: Big Head was also previously featured in The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind and can be found living in the region of Sheogorad.
5. The Stranger
A Rather Familiar Stranger
Newcomers aiming for senior positions within the Thieves Guild may eventually cross paths with an enigmatic figure known only as “The Mysterious Traveler.
Initially, The Stranger appears during the mission titled “Taking Care of Lex,” which is part of the guild’s main questline. At this point, you’ll need to utilize his abilities to craft a letter meant for the Countess of Anvil. Despite any dialogue, he remains aloof and reveals very little about himself. People are intrigued by him but can’t seem to learn much about his true identity. However, one thing is certain: there’s something eerily familiar about this mysterious figure.
6. Sheogorath
The Prince Of Madness
Returning to the enigmatic Shivering Isles, it’s hard to imagine such a list without including its peculiar monarch, Sheogorath, as well.
In the game “Oblivion,” Sheogorath, who is famously known as the Daedric prince of insanity, plays a significant role within the main storyline of the Shivering Isles DLC. Consequently, players should anticipate frequent encounters with this intriguing non-player character throughout the expansion. As the embodiment of madness, Sheogorath can be elusive and mysterious at times, but his witty dialogue occasionally adds a touch of humor to his character, making him even more captivating.
7. M’aiq The Liar
Tamriel’s Greatest Deceiver
M’aiq the Liar isn’t just one of the more well-known and enigmatic characters in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, but he might be iconic for the entire series itself, as he is also present in Morrowind, Skyrim, and Online.
M’aiq is a frequently appearing Khajiit character in the game series, notorious for spinning tall yarns. Not much is known about this elusive Khajiit, and the scant information gleaned from conversations may not be reliable. Many believe that M’aiq was included in the games as a kind of hidden clue or easter egg by developers, serving to share tidbits of universe lore.
He’s quite an unusual individual, and while M’aiq may not have a significant role in any of the games he appears in, his unique personality and witty dialogues add a delightful blend of humor and mystery to the storyline.
8. Adoring Fan
By Azura, By Azura, By Azura!
Among the most iconic role-playing game characters, particularly in internet folklore, The Adoring Fan inevitably found a spot on our list somehow.
As an Arena Grand Champion gamer, I’ve come to know The Adoring Fan as that persistently chatty, but undeniably amusing NPC character. Once you’ve earned your title, this fellow seems to stick closer than a shadow. In terms of combat effectiveness, he’s not much help, but he’s more than willing to tag along on my adventures – if I can bear his company long enough! At first glance, this chatty Bosmer might seem like an irritant. But trust me, his antics are worth the occasional headache for the laughs they bring.
The character, or Non-Player Character (NPC), has gained such a significant status in gaming that he’s been memorialized as a plush toy on Bethesda’s online marketplace.
