Back in March 2024, I found myself grappling with the shocking news about the passing of Akira Toriyama, the brilliant mind behind Dragon Ball Super. Since then, this beloved series of ours has been on an extended break, with a fleeting revival in February 2025. As time goes by and silence persists, I can’t help but ponder if we’ve seen the end of Dragon Ball Super. The anticipation is palpable among the fan community as we eagerly await any updates on its future.
Dragon Ball Super stands as a prominent series within Shueisha’s V-JUMP magazine, sharing this distinction with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. This popular manga serves as an official and canon follow-up to the original work, crafted by Toyotaro under the guidance of Akira Toriyama. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the franchise following Toriyama’s passing, one may wonder what lies behind the apparent lack of updates on Dragon Ball Super?
Will The Dragon Ball Super Manga Ever Return?
When it was announced there’d be a unique Dragon Ball Super one-shot, fans eagerly waited for the series to resume its regular airing schedule. Their excitement escalated when the one-shot dropped in February 2025 and was revealed as Dragon Ball Super Chapter 204. Even though no chapter was slated for March, fans remained optimistic that positive updates would arrive soon.
As the days turned into weeks and the summer sun rose higher, my excitement for the continuation of our beloved “Dragon Ball Super” grew stronger. The approach of Goku Day (May 9) and the 10th anniversary of this epic series had me on tenterhooks, yet there’s been no official announcement about the release date for Chapter 205 from V-JUMP magazine – and guess what? It’s our anniversary month! Could there be a surprise around the corner? Alas, it seems like there won’t be any new chapter gracing the pages of the magazine with these celebrations. This unexpected twist has left fans feeling disheartened and even wondering if the series might have come to an end.
Despite V-JUMP not yet confirming a return for the series, it hasn’t been definitively canceled either. In fact, they recently conducted an interview with Toyotaro that hints at possible future events, and they continue to showcase Dragon Ball Super among their ongoing titles. This suggests that there might be intentions to bring back Dragon Ball Super in the future.
When Could DB Super Be Back?
Due to our uncertainty about what’s causing the delay in the series’ return, it’s challenging to pinpoint exactly when it might come back. It could be due to Toyotaro facing difficulties in carrying on the story without Toriyama, or it could be linked to other complications, such as reported disputes over the ownership of the Dragon Ball franchise.
As an ardent fan, it appears that a slight hitch is delaying the comeback of my beloved series for the moment. If they were merely biding their time for the perfect moment, I would have expected a return this month. However, since no official word has been uttered, it seems there’s more to it than just waiting for the right timing. Rest assured, this doesn’t indicate a major obstacle preventing its return; rather, it suggests that Toyotaro and/or Shueisha haven’t managed to coordinate their plans to continue the series due to unforeseen circumstances. Consequently, fellow enthusiasts should not pin their hopes on a specific date; the series might resurface at any given moment.
Fans Want the Black Frieza Arc
The show took a break following the conclusion of the Super Hero Saga, with plans to start a fresh storyline in the manga. Although there are numerous potential scenarios, fans eagerly anticipate the comeback of “Dragon Ball Super” for the much-awaited Black Frieza Arc. Fans have yearned for more of this character since his debut in the Granolah Arc. Black Frieza represents the most powerful transformation that Frieza has ever attained, and it was confirmed that he surpasses all Z-Fighters in this state.
It wasn’t feasible for me to consistently lose to the Saiyans throughout my lifetime, thus I sought an upgrade. Introducing Black Frieza. It is important to note that reaching this form required a great deal of effort on my part.
— Black Frieza in DBS
There’s talk that the Black Frieza saga might be the final act in the storyline. Since Frieza is a widely beloved villain, introducing new ones may not have the same impact, and bringing back more could feel repetitive. Hence, it seems appropriate for the series to end with Frieza. Toyotaro has hinted at a Black Frieza arc, but hasn’t confirmed it as the last one. However, fans can expect the Black Frieza arc to make history within the franchise.
