Typically, these games align with contemporary gaming market tendencies by starting off with an attention-grabbing introduction, be it through compelling storytelling or dynamic gameplay, in order to captivate players within the vast, vibrant universe they’ve created.

Here, I’ve gathered a selection of JRPGs that offer instant enjoyment. They hook you right away with compelling or heartfelt scenes, or by presenting distinctive gameplay elements that capture your interest from the opening play.

To ensure we’re on the same page, by “fun” I’m not only referring to joyful or cheerful fun, but also to engaging and thought-provoking entertainment that keeps us eagerly anticipating what’s to come.

Offenses From The Get-Go

I have a strong fondness for Atlus and their Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs), particularly the series Persona. However, I must acknowledge that these games tend to move at a leisurely pace and may not always value the player’s time. Despite this, they are rich in activities and boast a storyline that can linger in our memories as long as we remain committed to it.

Well, let me tell you, it took me by surprise when ReFantazio not only launched the game with maximum speed but also managed to end my game within just two minutes of taking control of our unspoken hero. I knowingly ventured towards those colossal sandworms, disregarding the warnings, hoping for a hidden trophy!

The game unfolds like an enchanting anime sequence, complete with thrilling action scenes and offensive language, which seems fitting given its nature. It immediately plunges us into the heart of the greatest peril imaginable. Moreover, the tactic used to incorporate the background music was exceptionally clever.

Without a doubt, we swiftly reach Grand Trad’s capital, and the classic Atlus style unfolds fully, particularly if you intend to chat with every NPC or delve into every hidden corner of the city. However, even within JRPG standards, it presents an exciting opening that is sure to capture your interest immediately.

Rogue Galaxy

Rough Start

The summary of “Rogue Galaxy” introduces the planet Rosa, which is under the control of the Longardian Federation. Interestingly, one of its inhabitants, our main character Jaster Rogue, is far from being a free citizen on this very planet. Starting a JRPG with such a predicament, whether in the past or present, seems less than ideal, even compared to “Tales of Arise”.

Out of nowhere, Rosa finds herself under assault. Upon investigating, Jaster encounters a stranger who hands him a sword. With this weapon in hand, he launches into combat against various desert beasts, all while trying to uncover the source of the turmoil. Coincidentally, two space pirates take notice of his prowess with the mysterious sword and believe him to be the top hunter in the cosmos. They then decide to join forces with Jaster.

Enjoying lively disagreements, drama, bewilderment – all part of an engaging college gathering, and also found in JRPGs. Rogue Galaxy is an action RPG that delivers on its promises. However, when we reach the boss battle, the game surprises us with a shooting feature, allowing us to create platforms during combat to climb the boss and strike its vulnerable area.

In simpler terms, “Rogue Galaxy” was so engaging right from the start because of its creative methods for incorporating new elements into traditional action JRPGs. Even before I knew how to access the game’s menu, I found myself captivated. Over the next 10 hours, the game would continue to introduce one exciting feature after another – and while it might initially feel overwhelming – these new additions kept me eager to keep playing.

Final Fantasy X-2

How Dare I Acknowledge This Game

Friends who appreciate gaming, don’t put down your game pieces just yet! Some of us genuinely admire Final Fantasy X-2, myself included. If anyone thinks it’s wrong to savor games that are not as widely recognized, they might want to reflect on their preferences and perhaps try a dance routine like Yuna’s popstar performances to infuse some joy into their lives.

The reason the opening scene of Final Fantasy X-2 stands out so much is due to its playful dance, perfectly encapsulating the “fun right away” theme. Even if you’re not a fan of this JRPG’s storyline, find its focus on female protagonists questionable (which seems to be a common sentiment these days), or disagree with its design where many elements can be missed (a point of contention for me), the opening dance still manages to impress.

It can’t be argued that the opening scenes of Final Fantasy X-2 are nothing short of terrific. The narrative begins with a thrilling action sequence, reminiscent of Charlie’s Angels, complete with a powerful soundtrack and an abundance of acrobatic stunts.

Improving upon it further, it smoothly moves into combat, reintroducing the classic Active Time Battle (ATB) system. This feature beautifully establishes the game’s atmosphere, although it was unable to maintain that feel for an extended period.

Lost Odyssey

War, Death, And Immortality

Despite my awareness that it’s not ideal to judge a game based on hindsight, it’s challenging not to view Lost Odyssey through that lens. This Role-Playing Game (RPG) was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, for the Xbox 360. At a time when turn-based RPGs were beginning to encounter prejudice and being abandoned even by Japanese developers, this game stood out as somewhat of an outsider.

Playing Lost Odyssey, with its stunning visuals, enhanced graphics, and meticulously designed cutscenes, rekindled my belief that turn-based games are far from obsolete. Moreover, the game’s narrative starting point amidst a raging war significantly strengthened its initial impact.

Immediately following, we learn about the combat system and Aim Ring system, which boosts an attack when you successfully execute a Quick Time Event (QTE). After defeating some initial troops, we encounter a boss. Unfortunately, this proves to be inconsequential as a massive, fiery spell sweeps everyone away.

Fortunately, our central character, Kaim Argonar, is immortal. He emerges among countless scorched remains and strides back towards the city as if it were an ordinary day – say, a Thursday. If this opening doesn’t pique your interest, I’m not sure what would.

NieR: Automata

The End of The World Requires Urgency

When you begin playing NieR: Automata, you select your options and find yourself immersed in a fast-paced shooting game, leaving you puzzled as you question, “Isn’t this an action RPG?” Yet, this initial phase is fleeting, lasting merely 3-4 minutes. Following that, you pick up the essential commands for hack ‘n’ slash combat, and to your surprise, a boss battle awaits!

The action doesn’t get any more intense than that, and it won’t, since after the initial events unfold, the game gives you a moment to relax and appreciate the world around you. Trust me when I say that you’ll want to fully immerse yourself in all that this game offers. To me, NieR: Automata is one of the standout games within the JRPG genre, a title that even those who typically dislike the genre should give a try at least once.

Though the game may occasionally slow down and present scenes as intense and chaotic as the initial one, continue playing. Familiarize yourself with character 2B, enjoy your time with 9S, perish from consuming a toxic fish, and repeat the process because I’m certain you’ll appreciate it later. This is after you’ve finished pondering over our purpose in this seemingly insignificant, ungrateful universe.

As a devoted gamer, one timeless joke that resonates deeply within the gaming community is the classic Mario trope where his princess is always found in another castle. This age-old gag, which pre-dates the contemporary understanding of what a meme truly represents, continues to be relevant today.

It was quite a shock when I played Super Mario RPG for the first time, as the story began by whisking us straight to Bowser’s castle to save the princess. Remarkably, we managed to do it! But fear not, the adventure has only just begun.

The unexpected twist, even for those accustomed to Mario platformers, was captivating and left me eagerly anticipating more. But if neither Princess Peach is in danger nor Bowser is the adversary, then what challenges lie ahead for our mustached protagonist?

Try this game that combines a turn-based system with timed attack mechanics, which it either originated or significantly popularized. It’s a Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) that is immediately entertaining and intriguing. If you’re keen, I suggest giving the remake version available on Nintendo Switch a try.

From the moment I dive into the world of Expedition 33, I find myself stepping into Gustave’s boots. The game immediately grips me with its engaging battle system, and it’s here that Sandfall’s innovative reactive combat system truly comes to life. It’s clear that this game isn’t about repeating the past; it’s about pushing boundaries and offering something fresh and exciting.

However, it wasn’t the battle system that drew me to include this French-made JRPG on my list, but rather its compelling narrative. To keep things spoiler-free (though this is widely known from promotional materials), the underlying theme of Expedition 33 revolves around the looming specter of human mortality and our finite existence.

In an unprecedented emotional impact for a JRPG enthusiast like myself, the game’s prologue moved me to tears in just the first hour. It wasn’t enjoyable in a lighthearted way, but its intensity was so potent that I became instantly captivated and determined not to let go until I had experienced every aspect it offered.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but jump headfirst into another thrilling JRPG adventure, where even within the initial minutes, I find myself squaring off against a formidable boss battle. It seems that developers just love to serve up these intense encounters right from the get-go, as if to say “Welcome back, adventurer! Let’s dive straight into the frantic action!

Granblue Fantasy: Relink is a widely played mobile and web browser game that inspired developers Cygames to venture into console and PC gaming. Successfully making the transition, they released an action RPG incorporating gacha elements and farming, but without requiring players to empty their life savings for characters.

Relink can be described as a game that combines elements of Monster Hunter and traditional Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs). This means you’ll encounter anime-style visuals, a compelling narrative, and characters who enjoy announcing their abilities before engaging in intense battles. The fights themselves are exciting and enjoyable.

Currently, I’m unsure if the online community for Granblue Fantasy: Relink is still thriving. While you can indeed play the game on your own, it may take longer to progress due to the absence of an AI opponent that can match the skill level of an average player. However, from the moment you start a new game, this JRPG offers a tremendous amount of enjoyment!
