After whispers and conjecture about an exclusive Xbox device, we now have official confirmation of the ROG Xbox Ally X, developed by ASUS.
On June 8th during the Xbox Games Showcase, our earlier reporting from March was officially validated.
Under the codename “Keenan,” a device was crafted to have an appearance that is “distinctively Xbox”-esque. Earlier this year, Jez Corden, who initially shared the news, validated that the ROG Xbox Ally X does indeed go by the name “Keenan.
There will be two versions of the ROG Xbox Ally, with the specs listed below.
ROG Xbox Ally X
- AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor
- 24 GB memory
- 1TB of storage
ROG Xbox Ally
- AMD Ryzen X2A processor
- 16 GB memory
- 512 GB of storage
As an ardent gaming enthusiast, let me share my excitement about the Xbox Ally – a compact Xbox console that fits perfectly in one’s hands. This versatile device can run games through multiple platforms such as Xbox Game Pass, your personal Xbox library, Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and GOG, offering a wide array of gaming options to choose from. However, I can’t wait to feel its ergonomic design and responsive controls myself!
The ROG Xbox Ally X Is Heavier Than You May Realize
Our friends at Polygon recently had a chance to play with the ROG Xbox Ally X.
What stood out most during my time with the ROG Xbox Ally X was that my arms felt quite fatigued even after only 20 minutes of playing the revamped Gears of War.
Among comparable gaming devices, the ROG Xbox Ally X stands out as the bulkiest, tipping the scales at approximately 1.58 pounds. For instance, the Nintendo Switch 2, complete with its Joy-Cons, only weighs 1.18 pounds in comparison. To put that into perspective, the original Nintendo Switch with attached Joy-Cons weighs just 14.03 oz, while the Switch OLED model plus Joy-Cons comes in at a still lighter 14.82 oz.
In simpler terms, the ROG Xbox Ally X weighs nearly the same as both the Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go (1.41 pounds each). Given that I have large hands and find it difficult to play both devices comfortably while lying in bed, the weight of the ROG Xbox Ally X is a significant issue for me. The Switch 2 stands out due to its comfortable grip, even though it’s heavier than the original Switch, which I still find comfortable to hold.
The high cost of the ROG Xbox Allies is a point of discussion right now. At present, there are no specified prices for either model. The standard ROG Xbox Ally comes with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, while the ROG Xbox Ally X boasts 24GB RAM and 1TB storage. To put this into perspective, the Lenovo Legion GO models retail at $699.99 and $749.99 respectively. Considering this, one might assume that the ROG Xbox Allies would be priced comparably. However, Microsoft recently announced price increases for their hardware and games, which could potentially affect the pricing of these products.
