Xbox Cancels New MMO From Elder Scrolls Online Team In Latest Wave Of Cuts – Report

It seems that, besides Everwild by Rare, there was also another Xbox game that didn’t make it to release – an MMORPG in development for quite some time at ZeniMax Online Studios.

As reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Microsoft has scrapped a game project tentatively named “Blackbird,” which was being developed by the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online. According to Schreier, this game had been in progress since 2018. However, no further information about the project’s details or objectives were disclosed.

Experiencing firsthand the shambolic nature of today’s Xbox layoffs, I found myself locked out of my Slack account at Zenimax Online Studios without any notice or communication from HR. No word on whether I still have a job, just a sudden deactivation of my Slack account – a chilling silence that speaks volumes.” Schreier added.

On July 2nd, Microsoft announced widespread job reductions impacting numerous employees, even those at Xbox. In an internal memo to team members, Microsoft’s Gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, stated that these layoffs were essential for the continued growth and prosperity of Xbox in the future.

In a recent statement, Spencer noted that our current plans for software, hardware, and game development have never been more robust. He attributed this success to some challenging choices Xbox made in the past.

It seems he might be alluding to the past instances of mass redundancies and studio shutdowns at Xbox throughout the years. However, when it comes to the recent round of reductions, as of Wednesday morning, there don’t appear to have been any outright studio closures.

In my excitement as a fan, I can’t help but share what I’ve learned about Everwild by Rare. Announced in 2019, this game has been through several reboots throughout its development, eventually leading to reports of its cancellation. Stay tuned with TopMob for any fresh updates that might emerge from Microsoft’s recent round of cost-cutting measures.
